Didn't Margeret Thatcher come up with, cream cakes, "Naughty but nice." Or is that an urban myth?

I've googled it and allegedly it was Salman Rushdie who came up with, "Naughty but nice" which, if anything, is even more bizarre.

MyThreeWords · 16/09/2026 18:25

@TheTecknician "Course you can Malcolm" (pronounced "Balcolm" to mimic his cold-infested speech in the ad) was a favourite saying in our house. As soon as anyone expressed hesitancy about their ability to do something they were jumped on with this phrase.

ToadRage · 16/09/2026 18:25

The red car and the blue had a race, all red wants to do is stuff his face, he eats everything he sees, from trucks to prickly trees, but smart old blue he took the Milky Way. He's looking for a chocolate treat, fluffy and light, cos he knows it won't spoil his appetite. OH NO, THE BRIDGE HAS GONE!!! Old red can't carry on but smart old blue he took the Milky Way.

Bounty, the stronger soaker upper, Bounty! (the original name of Plenty, kitchen roll)

GinToBegin · 16/09/2026 18:26

I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony… think that went to number 1 in the charts on the back of that ad.

P-p-p-p-pick up a penguin, back when Penguin bars weren’t nasty.

“A last request, gringo…” - dodgy advert even then, but loved a Texan bar, back in the day.

New Trebor mints are a minty bit stronger
Stick 'em up your bum and they last a lot longer

We sang the Coca Cola song at school as a kind of hymn. Poor Miss O'Hara our headmistress. I don't think she knew it was from an advert. She wouldn't have liked that.

Oh Lord. The list is growing. Mum and JR Hartley, Sheila and the fake perfume, Miss O'Hara and the Coca Cola jingle. Innocent times in the Red Rose County.

I was about to say the Club one. They couldn't use that advert nowadays as the amount of chocolate on a Club has diminished appallingly.

Polo.. the mint with the hole

Redheadedstepchild · 16/09/2026 18:41

@ToadRage I think the, "Stronger Soaker Upper" would have worked just as well for Bounty, the coconut filled chocolate bar too, not just the kitchen roll of the same name. Considering its ability to absorb saliva.
