Happy to go first with Navy on a little boy. Not sure if they were going with the colour or a nautical theme but it kind of suits him actually. Also a little girl called Nala from the Lion King. My own legal name is a absolute clanger before anyone comes for me with the ‘sneery thread’ accusations 😂

Polaris (boy, white British W Yorks)
Song (Girl of indigenous American heritage)
Comfort (Nigerian man)
Shanti (girl, white British, hippy parents).

I always liked Shanti, I worked with one, Indian decent. I also have a Tibetan peace circle with Shanti inscribed on it as it means Peace.

One of my DDs went to school with an Ashanti a couple of years ago.

An ex colleague and his wife made their DDs name up. I can’t remember the spelling but it was pronounced Zay, it actually suited her.

Most “unique” name which was thankfully refused was a woman who worked at the same place as me tried to call her child 4Real.

My own child when I was pregnant people asked me if I had names I said yes, her name will be …. I was asked several times if I made it up. It’s a perfectly normal Irish name, think along the lines of Saoirse, but because I was living in another country where Irish names weren’t common people thought it was made up.

I always find it fascinating when people refer to “normal” names, because just because what’s normal in one country dosnt mean it’s normal in another.

No idea who she is but I gather Sloane is an Irish name.

I can think of three truly unique names of people I know / have known but they would be instantly identifiable to anyone who knows them.

One of my mum's carers in her nursing home was called Happy. It suited her too.

Sloane is certainly not an Irish name! Unless you’re relying on those dimwit online pages that just generate nonsense.

Is Gooey not an urban myth??... I swear I've heard that one before!

Yes, it’s from the same playbook as ‘La-a’ and Smegma.

@iloveanearlynight, no, definitely Frisbee. She's actually a professor now, in classics. Given that Thisbe is from Greek mythology originally, it would have been particularly apt.

I actually quite like Arcadian - Cadie for short.

Chopper is silly, though - might as well just call them Plonker or Todger!

i congratulated a woman at college years ago when she brought in her baby - she’d called her Tiah Maria “like the drink but with a h at the end” 😳

My dd is insisting that she will name her first born child “Dorito”.

She’s been set on that for the last two and a half years. She thinks it’s a beautiful name.

She’s 5. I’m actually hoping she still feels the same in 25 years or so.

Maybe you can convince her to go for Dorita instead, which is an actual name, and rather pretty!

Siblings could be Kahluah, Amarulah and Tequilah Rose?

I used to work in a bank in the 1990s and we had an elderly lady customer (white, British) named Sunbeam, I saw her birth certificate and it was her actual given name. She was very sweet, it really suited her.

AatoZz · 31/08/2026 14:08

My colleague's daughters are called Charity and Destiny. And my friend's son is called Cash.

Beowulf.

A tiny baby passed to me to hold while his mother sorted out an older child whose name, very sadly, I can’t recall.

This pretty much wins for me. Beowulf. Amazing.

I used to work with someone called Heavenly Blessing. And she really was - the name was perfect for her, she was so lovely. Her sister was Precious Gift. Their brother was called…. Brian. Grin

ETA in response to the post just above - they were from Nigeria. Apparently the dad was a huge fan of Queen so the son was named after Brian May.

(HB, if you happen to be on MN, hi!!! I still make the cake, and I think of you often!)

Poor Brian. Nothing wrong with Brian but a bit of a let down in the family naming tradition.

LittleGreenDuck · 31/08/2026 18:48

I know a Colston. The family are in Bristol and if you know local history, you’ll understand why this is an “interesting” choice. Colston’s namesake is gradually being renamed and erased from the area, so god knows why they thought it was a good idea.

Muffin. Muffin’s parents let her three year old brother name her!

Maybe they’d watched a bit of Monty Python?
