Happy to go first with Navy on a little boy. Not sure if they were going with the colour or a nautical theme but it kind of suits him actually. Also a little girl called Nala from the Lion King. My own legal name is a absolute clanger before anyone comes for me with the ‘sneery thread’ accusations 😂

I have met more than one of each of those names.

Recently I did my family tree and on the English side, b1700, found a Briscoe. Love it.

Have only met one Candida, but 60 years ago when I was about 6, I thought it was such a lovely name. I was going to call my dd Candida - until I found out.

Until you found out it was the name of a common thrush infection? I’ve also heard of a number of American girls called Candida and wondered what the hell their parents were thinking!

The woman who plays keyboards in Pulp is called Candida (Doyle). I think it’s an unfortunate name and would have changed it or gone by my middle name if that was me.

edited in case person involved sees this.

There was a Spike in my DS's primary school class.

I never understood how she looked at her tiny new baby and thought Spike - I think it's a Jack Russell's name

I knew of a Spike, and I agree it’s a dogs name.

Beowulf.

A tiny baby passed to me to hold while his mother sorted out an older child whose name, very sadly, I can’t recall.

Velocity. Dad was in the RAF. I imagine she spent a lot of time saying “No, not Felicity…”

Did she have a brother with 'challenging' behaviour named Turbulence?

I know a couple who made up names for their 3 kids. I won't list them all as very identifying, but one son is called Jeliah. That is the most "normal" name. All 3 kids go by normal-sounding nicknames semi-related to their names.

Were they from the UK? People would just be very surprised to encounter a British boy called Julia who also had an Australian accent!!

Via work I’ve been aware of a handful of Lucifers.

I’m saying nothing about people living up to their names.

At first, I thought you were saying that "Via" was the name. Actually, I kind of like it. 😄

BrezhnevsLuxuriantEyebrows · 31/08/2026 09:44

We've had a couple of mentions of 'Navy' now. That reminds me of the thread where OP's family member had a baby boy and were wanting to call him, as OP described it with shock (initially trying not to be outing), "an adjective followed by a normal boy's name".

It turned out that it was actually Navy Lee; but somebody's guess at 'Fierce Barry' still makes me chuckle to this day Grin

I'm certain somebody is called it. Mia, Tia, Pia, Nia.... Via.

PingoDome · 31/08/2026 10:18

Viia (double ii) is a name I've come across, possibly Estonian or Lithuanian.

Pigriver · 31/08/2026 10:24

I'm a teacher in a very diverse area so have seen lots

King-Faad
Prince
Prynce
Princess (all separate families but we could have had a whole royal family)

Ocean
Woody
Spike I know 2 of each if these through my personal life

Rakshit which just felt wrong saying
Then we have the kids with punctuation in their names and those with either no surname or the same name twice.
My fave was a sibling pair, Mercedes and Colin
