What is the hand signal the boys killed on A66 are making?

In the pictures that have been released, four out of five of them are making the same hand gesture. I feel very out of touch, but what is it?

Can you actually hear yourself?

Yes. Why?

I know, it just made me think of two friends of mine who was in a similar position as the passengers (ie at the whim of a dangerous driver). Fortunately they didn’t die, though one has died since. Both of them were vilified for even being in the car but there was nothing they could have done to stop what happened.

I appreciate your point, but these lads are notorious for this. It’s not bad luck that they were in the car. It’s how they spend their leisure time. It’s what they do for kicks. It’s totally different from the scared women whose partners use aggressive driving to punish and intimidate them. These lads habitually did this stuff. They knew the score.

and @Backedoffhackedoff of course they are murders! There’s no equality between the two men who died despite doing nothing wrong, and the 5 who are dead because they chose to do something really reckless that was inevitably going to kill someone at some point. One of them almost killed a motorcyclist recently, if I remember correctly.

Killing yourself and someone else simultaneously doesn’t mean you’re magically not a murderer. It’s still your fault.

they’re dead. Dead people can’t be murderers. The language you’re using, the aggression… it’s just really weird

Dead people can't be murderers? Um, yes they can. Death doesnt erase what you were in life, for good or ill.

You are being very aggressive on this thread for no reason. The OP is allowed to ask questions, after all it's how we learn things about our world. It would be a very dull and boring world if no questions were ever asked.

If you want this thread to end then try answering OPs question.

Aggressive - do show me where. Go on.

I didn't say people shouldn't ask questions. I encourage it.

I don't want the thread to end - I think it's very obviously a class issue. But no one is saying so. And it's very complex and difficult when kids die who have behaved awfully who for whatever reason have fuck all idea of danger (to themselves or others).

Maybe you should answer the question?

It sounds like you know them and have formed a reasoned view based on that, which is fair enough. What’s really grim on the thread is people almost crowing over their death. Whether this was something they did regularly or not, some of them were teenagers and clearly weren’t properly parented. It’s possible to feel that it’s a tragic loss of life despite the stupidity of their actions.

H202too · 23/08/2026 23:21

Could it just be a locsl trend like the Darlo finger. Which is only 16 miles away.

What is the hand signal the boys killed on A66 are making?
H202too · 23/08/2026 23:28

Also jusr roadman signs popular with youth.

HenriettaHippopotamus · 24/08/2026 05:38

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 23/08/2026 15:39

The photos I’ve seen have the middle finger extended.

I saw a tribute video for one of the Irish boys featuring sappy music and talk about heaven, but the photo was of him giving the middle figure. Even if you're short on pictures, how do you not crop that out?

Yeah you can’t murder someone when you’re dead yourself thought that was fairly obvious

”It’s possible to feel that it’s a tragic loss of life despite the stupidity of their actions.”

the posters on this thread won’t be able to understand that. Unless you’re competitively calling them names you’re not demonstrating you recognise stupidity, apparently

Nope. You are wrong. Those boys caused the deaths of the policemen. That they died is irrelevant.
If someone died because I poisoned their coffee just before I fell off a cliff, I killed them.

Why are you so desperate to deny what they did? The two men would be alive right now, if the youngsters hadn’t caused their deaths,

Obviously you know causing the death of someone isn’t the definition of murder?

anyone who causes a car accident in which someone dies kills them. They are not murderers and aren’t treated as such

HenriettaHippopotamus · 24/08/2026 07:17

Driving down the road on the wrong side of the road is far beyond stupid. It’s criminal. Calling their actions stupid makes it sound like mindless teenage nonsense.

And criminal is a stronger word so more fitting? Is criminal really worse than stupid? Criminal just means breaking the law

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 24/08/2026 07:46

Ah, so @Backedoffhackedoff was purely after the charge that would have been used if they’d survived. They won’t be charged with murder now, for sure.

I’d agree it’s an appalling waste of life, but I’d be surprised if they turned their lives around. It’s sad for the people who loved them, but quite possibly safer for everyone else.

No, it’s what murder actually is vs what you like to say because it sounds even more dramatic than it already is.

you have a preference for calling them murderers because that sounds good to you, and makes you feel satisfied.

Therefore I am not wrong, as you stated, you are. You are calling them murders because you prefer that description, but it’s still wrong.

FatEndoftheWedge · 24/08/2026 08:45

I wonder if they were called murders as in retro specivectuvly charged and brought shame whether it may help the communities do parent them better ?
If my DC chose to drive the wrong way on a motorway id accept they chose to murder people

wtf?! 🙈 how can you retrospectively charge a Dead person?

it’s like medieval flogging- bring shame on the family!

what difference does it make to anyone if you accept they’re a murderer? In reality who that matters would actually care about that?

Of course it’s criminal. It’s also stupid, reckless, dangerous, thoughtless, idiotic… How many adjectives is enough?

I'm not sure of the legalities of actually Charging someone but I think in telsnd esp the glorying of the boys that killed the family has caused up set. Maybe if there was some way to make sure no ,they killed people they are murders it would help the families to assist the teens alive not to drive the wrong way. .
I think maybe sadly you are right though some cultures seems to glorfy violnce and stuff so maybe they would not care I don't know.

Glorifying the boys is causing upset to you and everyone else who is seeking them and their families out on social media.

You have no idea what the families of the police officers think, I strongly suspect they aren’t giving theM a second thought right now, let alone arguing about whether they’re murders and whether their families feel enough shame.

Raraskirtsagogo · 24/08/2026 10:00

TheDutchHouse · 23/08/2026 17:19

What I’m trying to say is that at least one of those boys may of been in there against their will or better judgment. I’m certainly not making excuses for the others ! I’m just pointing out that until we know full details they are someone’s son.
The teen boy in my example actually did go on to do something he was imprisoned for.
My own child died tragically as a teen .
These were not related events but gives me maybe a clouded view on it.

Edited

Firstly I'm very sorry for the loss of your child, what a terrible thing to have happened to your family.

Regarding this crash, I'd say it's incredibly unlikely that anyone was in that car against their will or better judgement. It was a stolen car. The plates had been cloned. That takes time and effort. Cars had been stolen previously and videos posted. These aren't the actions of a group of hapless lads who have taken a prank too far.

That would not fit with my experience. In general, victims families give quite a lot of thought to the people who kill them and have quite strong views on how they are portrayed.
