What is the hand signal the boys killed on A66 are making?

In the pictures that have been released, four out of five of them are making the same hand gesture. I feel very out of touch, but what is it?

A local dog waste bin has a picture of them doing their hand salute on it saying “ Thank you for your donation from your dog. towards the five dogs from Middlesbrough.

Now add a murder investigation of a house fire that killed a 7yr old and her aunt thought to be linked to crash /organised crime.

Of course families should be allowed to grieve in peace, but nobody should be releasing balloons for goodness sake, causing further harm to wildlife and the environment!

There was a discussion earlier on the thread about whether there was a balloon release planned for the yobs who died or whether people had got confused with the balloons being tied to a fence.

There's now been a balloon release for one of the men and his friends decided to add to the fun by setting some cars alight.

Nothing says profound grief like torching a few cars eh? Note how the police and fire service stood back and didn't interfere? They're untouchable and they know it.

Yes, I guess the Police knew if they interfered they risked a massive riot. But letting these people get away with this shit just makes the whole community feel even more unsafe.

Why are they untouchable?

HumberSquid · 29/08/2026 18:43

Velvasilk · 29/08/2026 15:11

Why are they untouchable?

Because they are apparently allowed to break the law in broad daylight with impunity.

Pretty sure if I stole a car, took it to the local rec, turned a few donuts and set light to it Id be arrested. Same for my kids. Same for my neighbours.

Uricon2 · 29/08/2026 19:29

I imagine that the police were trying to prevent further violence and possibly full scale riot, but given the subsequent arrests, may have been collecting evidence from these events and watching very closely.

Teeside police know everyone is looking at them. Frankly and I never, ever thought I'd say this, having been involved in the 1984 Miners Strike and seeing what was done then, inexcusably, I wouldn't be against sending the army in if it escalates further. I'm not suggesting live ammunition but let this mob deal with the Parachute Regiment, for eg.

ETA I do know this sounds extreme but the purpose of the military is ultimately to protect, and I think the many decent people of Middlesborough deserve not to have this happening.

Velvasilk · 29/08/2026 22:25

This from the BBC News report of the stupid balloon release.

Durham Police said officers decided to let the cars burn because "the field was contained and it was assessed there was no immediate risk to wider public safety".

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said one crew arrived at the scene but withdrew "given the circumstances and concerns for the safety of our firefighters".

Police said a majority of the crowd in the privately-owned field near Haswell had travelled from outside the County Durham area, bringing with them a number of vehicles.

The force said officers were called to the area shortly after 17:30 BST, adding that no-one was injured and no arrests were made.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Following a dynamic risk assessment, it was established that there was no immediate threat to public safety and no significant risk of the fire spreading.

"Given the circumstances and concerns for the safety of our firefighters, the decision was taken to withdraw from the area."

Velvasilk · 29/08/2026 22:27

This however doesn't make clear where the cars were from. I'd hope the police would have clocked the registration plates and compared with any reported stolen but they're probably replaced with false plates.
