What is the hand signal the boys killed on A66 are making?

In the pictures that have been released, four out of five of them are making the same hand gesture. I feel very out of touch, but what is it?

Can I just remind you all that there are families grieving their loved ones .
I totally get the anger as i am a relative of two police officers.

You may be a relative of 2 police officers but you are not a relative of the two police officers who were killed though.

You might feel a tad differently if you were!!

Pretty grim that people are putting tributes out to the young men already. You'd think their loved ones would be too ashamed to grieve publicly like that.

That's harsh. Three of them were barely adults. Either way, the families should be able to grieve how they see fit, they're grief is no less than that of the families of the police officers.

If you cant say anything nice, dont say anything at all.

This thread should be closed.

I doubt it will be. There is another thread running where people are saying the same sort of things. People are upset and angry, and rightly so. But some comments are really a bit much IMHO.

I'm sorry, I'm not understanding why you're offended that I'd like to know what a hand gesture is, even if it is predominantly used by a dufferent age group or class to mine?

Surlely wanting to understand other groups is a good thing? As I said, as those the the pictures (I believed) the familiy had chosen to release, I thought it must have some sort of positive meaning.

Just to add, I don't think it has a positive meaning but it doesn't have a specifically negative meaning either. For a lot of teenage boys (not just the joy riding types) it would be hard to find a photo taken informally where they aren't doing 🤘 with their hands or something else with their hands or pulling a face or making pretend gang signs. So a sign with a neutral meaning and therefore may be the best the parents can find. To be fair, it's highly unlikely even law abiding teenage boys have photos of them making an "I love my mum and respect the law" hand sign. Neutral is the best you can get.

Also, I disagree it's a chavy handsign. It's just a very genwric teenage boy hand sign.

newnewnamename · 23/08/2026 16:38

Skydivers have been using it for decades it's a bit of a cool/hanging thing. I have noticed it being widestream of late. The rock devils horns is index & pinky with others held down by thumb, it's not the same.

I'm not offended. Not remotely.

And naive it is.

You are being very aggressive on this thread for no reason. The OP is allowed to ask questions, after all it's how we learn things about our world. It would be a very dull and boring world if no questions were ever asked.

If you want this thread to end then try answering OPs question.

This is the second set of young men / children in less than a month.

Cannabis induced psychosis?

Psychosis would only affect one of them, not the whole car load. It’s not really a very usual thing for people in psychosis to do either

You are correct, but I have been in a situation ( long long before SM) where my 10 year old child got into a car with his friends older brother who was picking friend up from school . The teen then thought it was amusing to speed and then do emergency stops. My son was extremely upset on arriving home but learnt a valuable lesson . I’m putting myself into a position that if that incident had ended tragically would my son of been called some of the names on this thread ?

What if that person was the driver though?

And the rest couldn’t stop him? And that’s Something that played out in multiple crashes? Seems unlikely

Your 10 year old was getting a lift home from school - perfectly normal behaviour.

This car crashed at 3.30am. It's a completely different situation.

No they aren't. Seen their sort for years.

That's somewhat different from 5 adults/almost adults being in a car with cloned plates driving the wrong way on a dual carriageway at 3.30 am though.

What I’m trying to say is that at least one of those boys may of been in there against their will or better judgment. I’m certainly not making excuses for the others ! I’m just pointing out that until we know full details they are someone’s son.
The teen boy in my example actually did go on to do something he was imprisoned for.
My own child died tragically as a teen .
These were not related events but gives me maybe a clouded view on it.

Maybe trying to stop him was the reason for the crash?

Unlikely I agree, but possible. I used to hang around with people who got high and I know how they drive.

FaceEatingLeopard · 23/08/2026 17:22

It's like the Freemasons have their handshake - this lot are too stupid even for that so they have this sign in order that other scrotes and lowlifes will know them as their own.

OonaStubbs · 23/08/2026 16:24

They are idiots and the world is a better place with them not in it. It's a crying shame that two police officers had to die to make it happen though.

Do you think this thread should be taken down. It really is horrendous?

No one is stopping them grieving but there is no need to plaster pictures of them all over facebook making out how angelic they were. Also no need whatsoever to have balloon releases so they can injure or even kill some defenceless animals in memory of their little angels. They should grieve quietly while hanging their heads in shame

I find this such a bizarre but also quite fascinating attitude. Like.. what’s the point in your vocalising it? Does it make you feel good? Why do you say things like that?

MarshaMarshaMarsha · 23/08/2026 17:51

MrsMabelThorpe · 23/08/2026 15:52

The kind of morals that maybe wouldn't dump on grieving families? They have lost their children in a horrible accident. Two of them were 17 FGS. Four of them were passengers. It is tragedy for all the families of all seven. No doubt the families of the boys will have uncomfortable, conflicting emotions including anger towards the boys, but let's cut them slack before criticising them for grieving how they wish.

No let’s not. Absolute scum all of them.
and the balloon releases just tops it all off. Not one brain cell or ounce of common sense among any of them.

cloned plates? nothing in this story gets better. So no insurance, prob no license or banned, drugs and/or alcohol? Its like a tick box exercise with tragic consequences

Backedoffhackedoff · 23/08/2026 17:53

Not really the point, but the article just describes balloons being tied to a post.

Yes it makes me feel slightly good because I am furious that yet another group of scummy shits have injured or murdered innocent people and that some posters see fit to make excuses for them.
