What is the hand signal the boys killed on A66 are making?

In the pictures that have been released, four out of five of them are making the same hand gesture. I feel very out of touch, but what is it?

It doesn't matter in that context but it's obviously culturally significant (widespread) in some way and I'm trying to enlighten myself.

Do you know for sure the families selected these images? It’s common for media to use social media images (maybe the BBC don’t). I agree they seem unusual ones, particularly given they’re all doing it. Seems unlikely to me that all the families would choose the same type of image.

This. It's a shame 3 sisters and a 7 year old boy had to be severely injured in the other similar crash too. My thoughts go out to the genuine victims, not the idiots taking part in these tiktok trend car chases.

Ok, if you need to know why people pose in a particular way because it will somehow improve your understanding of the world (?!) then have at it, I guess. Culturally significant is stretching it and it is really disingenuous to pretend it's just for improving personal knowledge when we know that cultural significance is fully loaded with class/age/etc.

It really isn't that deep in terms of meaning. Yes there are early "meanings" like it's association with rock music or secretly putting it behind someone elses head in a photo to signify bunny ears/cuckold horns depending on context. On a very basic level its just something to do with their hands that looks (in their eyes) vaguely cool and relaxed. Id say it is associated with cocky body language in a photo but it doesn't have a specific message. It's like people make the "peace" symbol or do a thumbs up or girls making the heart sign with their hands for a photom Obviously those kids aren't going to be making the heart sign etc because they want to look cool so they do the 🤘 instead.

Surlely wanting to understand other groups is a good thing? As I said, as those the the pictures (I believed) the familiy had chosen to release, I thought it must have some sort of positive meaning.

Of course their families and friends will be grieving. That's only natural. Especially their parents.

But that grief should be in private. I think it's disrespectful to the families of the police officers who were killed for their killers' families to post public tributes.
