Anyone else’s home a complete mess after the heatwave?

We live in a really small flat with not enough storage so it’s always a job to keep clutter to a minimum. With the heatwave I’ve had my 6 year old DS home as his school was partially closed. We’ve had fans everywhere, toys out, and to top it all off the washer dryer has broken and I’ve had to hang laundry up inside the place. The heat has made me flop and my general feeling has been that I just can’t be bothered to do anything like chores! Perimenopause plus heatwave not a good combo.

I am looking around the place feeling like I’m itching to get it tidied up and cleaned but I’m still boiling, tired from rubbish sleep night after night and can’t WAIT for my DS (whom I love dearly of course) to go back to school now!

is this the situation for anyone else??

I haven’t vacuumed all week, the bathrooms have only had loo cleaner squirted down, basins a quick wipe.
The kitchen is ok, worktops are clean, the dishwasher emptied every day but that’s it.

No way am I doing any more until it cools down, the bedrooms have varied from 25 to 30 degrees this week, most of downstairs has up at 36.

It’s just DP, me and our dogs, no children.

MoiraRoseVibes · 27/06/2026 21:19

Yeah, I know what you mean. It’s been like an “all bets are off” kind of time. We’ve been doing whatever we needed to get through it. Including eating and drinking random stuff at random times! It’s been almost like a break from reality…

Woolymommoth · 27/06/2026 21:21

I gave up on hoovering on Monday, surfaces have been wiped down after the odd day of cooking but the house could definitely do with a big clean, it’s driving me mad.

@northlondonnotislington using your dryer would have heated your flat even more - probably best it conked out!

Totallyfrazzledmum · 27/06/2026 21:25

yes! Utter bomb site inside and out. Washed up property for the first time today. Will deal with it next week as looks a lot cooler.

corblimeygvnr · 27/06/2026 21:25

Yes masses of ironing to be done 😬

PurpleFlower1983 · 27/06/2026 21:27

Mine is! I’ve spent an hour tonight trying to tidy up a bit and it’s still an absolute state!

user9764325677 · 27/06/2026 21:28

Mine is a tip. Haven’t tidied or cleaned all week. Managed a bit today

Iheartmysmart · 27/06/2026 21:29

My flat is an utter mess and there’s only me and the cat. It’s been too hot to do much cleaning, I’ve literally done the dishes each day and put on one load of laundry. I did a tip run earlier in the week and put out loads for a charity collection so lots of stuff has been got rid of but there’s ironing to do, all the recycling to go out, cat fur everywhere, the bathroom needs a bloody good clean and the fridge is almost empty. Roll on some cooler weather.

reluctantbrit · 27/06/2026 21:29

I have a teen so we don’t have toys out anymore

But thanks to the heat and sleep issues I was up, showered and ready to go by 5.30am most mornings and managed some tidying at least.
Kichern was done each evening but it was
mainly filling the dishwasher and a bit of washing up after cooking.

I managed laundry but have them outside on the patio during the day and back in the wardrobe in the evening.

AutumnLover1990 · 27/06/2026 21:31

Yup. I've just put away 3 baskets of laundry. Not hoovered or washed the floors all week 😔

HelpMeGetThrough · 27/06/2026 21:32

Nah, normal here. It’s been hot and sweaty, but still needed doing, so just did it.

Yearningallovertheplace · 27/06/2026 21:35

Never mind home, my entire life is a complete mess

mynameiscalypso · 27/06/2026 21:36

All of our routines have been completely thrown off by the heat this week. I’ve got so much work to catch up on as well and I’m pretty sure we all just did the bare minimum at work this week. Lots of internal meetings got cancelled either because of childcare stuff or because we just collectively decided it was too hot for a meeting.

Putmedownfor5shagger · 27/06/2026 21:37

Not a mess exactly but not quite as it usually is. I agree with a previous poster who said it's been like a break from reality.

Plus I've been working from home with my 5 year old as his school closed for 2 days so there's been more action inside and less time/inclination to do much due to the heat!

Thingamebobwotsit · 27/06/2026 21:39

Yep. And we started redecorating two rooms just before it kicked in, got delayed and then ran into the heat so we are in an utter mess. Thought it would be cool enough to get on top of it today, but it has been so humid not much has been done beyond basics.

Luckily am off work next week so I am hoping I can get back on top of it (and the gardening) then.

Thanks for starting this thread. Thought it was just me!

Same here re: floors. Just too much!

lovecotswoldsliving · 27/06/2026 21:46

Don’t beat yourself up.
Next week it’s getting cooler and you can tackle the housework, if you are up to it….

Newstartplease24 · 27/06/2026 21:46

Yes. Temperature dropped a tiny bit this afternoon and I asked teens to Hoover a bit which makes me hate the place marginally less. Meal plan and eating in general went out the window so I really need to sort the fridge and throw out whatever has rotted as we didn’t get to it. If I sleep tonight I’ll try to hit the ground running tomorrow with some batch cooking of whatever can be salvaged. I’ve been fit for nothing all week.

LondonLass2026 · 27/06/2026 21:47

Yep! Thought it was just me. Vaccummed today for the first time in a week (usually do it daily) and haven't even got the energy to tidy things away. It's simply too hot.

Add to that the worst perimenopausal, heavy, clotty, crampy periods every 2 weeks (have had fibroids for 30 years) and it's too hot to make a hot water bottle.

I love blue skies and sunshine so much, but this humidity can do one.

hockityponktas · 27/06/2026 21:53

Yep, absolute shit heap. I’ve been zonked after work each day and have done nothing except keep kitchen reasonable and do (not put away) the washing. Planning to tackle it tomorrow!

Me too, although I had a decorator in to paint a couple of rooms, so the contents of both rooms were piled up in other rooms, one of them being my bedroom. I've slept downstairs on a mattress all week, which at least was a tiny bit cooler than upstairs. Decorating is finished, but its been too hot to put everything back, so I'm living in chaos too.

Ninetysixdegreesintheshade · 27/06/2026 21:56

Mines a tip and I just cba to do anything.

ifonly4 · 27/06/2026 21:57

I wiped sinks and toilets in anticipation on Monday, bath hasn't been done, it's ok but needs doing. Downstairs was hoovered Tuesday morning. Since then I've only managed two lots of washing and dusting two rooms. I feel like I need to get back into normal routine, but in retrospect house isn't that bad - we had unexpected visitors this evening and it didn't matter. Clean bedding went on on Monday, but feel I really want to change that tomorrow as it's been so hot at night, even just sleeping on top of quilt. DH doesn't seem to care, he's been fed and has enough clean clothes, so no pressure.

devildeepbluesea · 27/06/2026 22:02

Absolute shit tip. Not just because of the heat but also because I took it upon myself to photograph and note every item of costume for the youth theatre group I volunteer with. House looks like a jumble sale held in a very unsavoury hall.
