Heatwave?

25 or 27 degrees is hardly a heatwave...

I'm in Australia and it gets to 45 I find it so funny that this is a heatwave in UK 😂😂

It is for UK 😂

I’ve read it could go up to 31 ! I live in the south east , so it’s always unbearable, but many people like hot weather so they will enjoy it.

Friends there have an enclosed porch. Everyone sleeping there at night. Here I believe in a heatwave an outdoor trampoline is a good bet

Mummyhasgonemad · 20/05/2026 13:44

We are at Slam Dunk festival so I'm going to soak up the sun, cool off with some free monster and enjoy the music - cant wait!

rainbowstardrops · 20/05/2026 14:03

I’d like to think I’ll be sat in the garden with my book and a nice cool drink but it’ll be bloody school holidays, so next door’s three screaming kids will probably be on their trampoline from 8am, their dog will be barking at them and their mother will be yelling at them for arguing. Fun. Not.
My mobility is crap at the moment, so I can’t even go for a walk.
So I’ll probably sit indoors with several fans pointed at me!!!

Works the other way too though. We had some family visiting from Austraila some Summers ago. It was about 16-18c most of the time. My kids were wearing shorts and t shirts, and when we went to the beach they were happy to go in the sea. Their Australian cousins were in puffa jackets and refused to go anywhere near the water. And I've got a friend in Canada who doesn't consider it to be cold unless it's under -10c. That would cause a national crisis here. I even notice the difference between where I live in the North of England and the South. I've got off the train in London in the Autumn plenty of times wearing short sleeves and no coat and been perfectly comfortable, and then noticed most other people have coats and wooly hats on.
It's change from what you're used to that makes the difference.
Plus the infrastructure in different countries is set up for their particular climate. We don't see big temperature changes in this country so most homes and public buildings don't have air conditioning like they do in hot countries, but nor do we have really well insulated houses and the means to keep everything running normally in very low temperatures and snow like they do in cold countries. So when we do get deviations from our normal weather, it's really noticeable.

Lunch on terrace in my fave restaurant with friends. Taking MIL and her carer to seaside (not so fun). Enjoying our garden.

Giggorata · 20/05/2026 14:44

I will be rejoicing.

I will get the washing out.
I will watch the swifts.
I will wear a linen dress and sandals.

Maybe because the Met Office say it is? For most of the country anyway, and as long as it lasts long enough. Here in the frozen North our threshold temperature is only 25c. (Not that we're going to see that in the forthcoming warm spell.)

Hopefully gardening. Long days of planting, weeding and cutting back. DC are busy for the weekend, so just really looking forward to a long weekend of me-time. DH will be BBQing in the evenings. Need to recharge my batteries.

RampantIvy · 20/05/2026 16:17

Been to buy paint this afternoon and will do some sanding after a cup of tea, ready to paint when the sun comes out on Friday.

frozendaisy · 20/05/2026 19:26

Oh it's so lovely outside this evening
And these long light evenings, it's looking like nearly a full week of heat here next week (for half term as well which never happens which is even better), it is a chance to use the garden in the way we eat and relax on holiday, you know in the evenings, outside. Carafe full of water and fruit.

We are fair of skin and midday blazing UV is a problem, but warm light evenings are just the best, we get so few.

So intend on channelling my inner Italian (my spiritual home)

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 20/05/2026 20:18

That reminds me. I need more gin and more mini magnums. And strawberries.

MoonlightMemories · 20/05/2026 20:25

Not an awful lot....I do however have a big shop (someone of these once a month after pay day) due that day and I just hope the poor delivery driver doesn't exhaust themselves having to bring it up several flights of stairs in that kind of 30 degrees heat...I might offer them a nice cold drink perhaps?

I'll probably spend the rest of the day feeling like I'm wilting and doing nothin... I'm one of those people who really isn't suited to hot weather at all...I can deal with up to 25 ok, but 30 is a bit much for me.

Tableforjoan · 20/05/2026 20:30

ours says 30c so normal routine of open windows while it’s cool and shut them all come actual sun.

Sun canopy up to keep sun off window. Fans on. Pool cleaned and levels checked. Slushie and ice maker on plenty of ice poles. Bbq and salad.

I might be working half term so lots of easy cool foods and snacks for the children since I work from home.

Lodge set up with the fridge on as that always stays cool in the heat so a nice place for the children to go relax and play some pool or just watch tv in the cooler part of the garden.

Will mean much more watering of our crops though pain in the ass.

SliceofTosst · 21/05/2026 07:30

29-33° over the whole Bank Holiday in London.

I need to sort my balcony out as it needs some tlc. West facing so will be pretty hot. Time to get some vitamin D I reckon.

GameOfJones · 21/05/2026 07:40

It's predicted to get to 33c here in Berkshire next week and be over 27c from tomorrow for a week.....and over half term which feels so rare!

I think we'll mainly be sitting in the garden, drying multiple loads of laundry in one day and eating all of our meals outside. I cannot wait!

RampantIvy · 21/05/2026 07:54

Nothing like as hot here, but lovely nevertheless. I can't wait.

What are you planning on doing in the heatwave ?
LazyFriday · 21/05/2026 07:56

I think it’s predicted 31 degrees here. I’m not a fan of the heat but we bought air conditioning units a few years ago so they’ll keep the house cool. Early morning and late evening dog walks, lots of ice lollies and hope it doesn’t last too long.

gingercat02 · 21/05/2026 08:08

We're doing a walking food tour on Saturday, it may be 22°c, I might put shorts or a skirt on!
Sunday a bit of gardening and then inside for the end of the Premier league.
Monday no plans yet. Tuesday back to work.
I might put the 4 tog duvet on instead of the 9 tog winter one.

frozendaisy · 21/05/2026 17:32

Eldest is doing homework at garden table :-)
Youngster came back pink after school basketball and a cycle home
The house is so big with the garden as a room

love it!
