What’s your current favourite sandwich?

We had some coleslaw left the other day that needed eating up, so I had it with some cheese in a sandwich. It’s years since I last had a cheese and coleslaw sandwich and I really enjoyed it. It’s my current favourite, even better with a few crisps added in for extra crunch.

I just love a classic Aussie salad sandwich that you get in places like fish and chip shops as well as bakeries.

White bread. Shredded iceberg lettuce. Grated carrot. Cucumber, tomato, perhaps a slice of cheese and always, but always, either sliced pickled beetroot or a pineapple ring.

Never taste the same in the UK somehow.

Lately though I've been having hummus, sundried tomato and black olive bagels.

peanut butter, cheese & coleslaw
cream cheese & marmite

Boots use to sell a vegan sandwich which had houmous, grated carrot and rocket in it. I'm not even vegan/veggie but it was delicious.

I also like a curried egg sandwich but only if I'm at home and not going to be breathing on other people.

I would eat pineapple in a salad sandwich ! Australians probably have it in their genes to make it correctly.

Ham, lettuce (classic butter-whatsit, not iceberg), wholegrain mustard, camembert (or brie, or other soft cheese of your choice) with a drizzle of balsamic.

Absolute heaven.

Or of course a nice crispy bacon sandwich..

ORR chip butty - have to be in the right mood for that one.

I tried to make an Elvis sandwich the other day because I read about it and wanted to try it.

Bacon, peanut butter and banana fried up.

I did it and it was awful. The banana taste just didn't work and reminded me of old school bananas and custard.

Elvis can keep as many of those sandwiches as he wants.

Lomonald · 27/04/2026 11:41

Op im trying to eat less processed ham, so ive been eating cheese and pickled beetroot sandwiches.

PullTheBricksDown · 27/04/2026 11:42

Made a classic cheese and pickle sandwich the other day and really enjoyed it. That's now my current fave.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 27/04/2026 11:42

Whichever one I'm eating next.

murasaki · 27/04/2026 11:42

Cold sliced beef, mayo, whole grain mustard, baby spinach and some crispy onions. Possibly with a slice of gouda.

ilovepixie · 27/04/2026 11:43

Where I live fruit is very common in a sandwich. Chicken and grape is very popular.

GasPanic · 27/04/2026 11:43

I have recently become a huge fan of the cheese toastie though.

It's a great way of using up extra veg in the fridge, so if you have mushrooms tomatoes peppers left over etc.

Brie and grape is nice, so I can see that.

Tomatoes always come out hotter than the sun!

I do like a ham, cheese and mushroom toastie though, I lived on those as a student.

Hellohah · 27/04/2026 11:48

Egg mayo.
It has been and forever will be my favourite sandwich.

Ncisdouble · 27/04/2026 11:54

Reuben or Rachel. But very close to roastbeef and horseradish

skiprun · 27/04/2026 11:55

Cheese savoury

7238SM · 27/04/2026 11:59

@DeposedPresident I also love an Aussie steak sandwich. We 4WD around Aus years ago and every road house made them and they were always delicious.
The buffalo sandwich I tried was was like eating shoe leather though.

Wonderknicks · 27/04/2026 11:59

I was recently told that in Australia burgers are served with beetroot & pineapple & this has blown my mind!
My favourite was a hummus & roasted veg wrap that Pret used to do, I don't think they do them any more & I my ake my own now. Yummy. Other than that, almost any sandwich! Love an egg mayo one with cheese & onion crisps. If you buy them they are often the cheapest. Home made is best though.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 27/04/2026 12:01

Cheese salad roll for me, no butter. Safe and always satisfying.

Rosewarbler · 27/04/2026 12:02

I immediately thought of the Gavin and Stacey Church Sandwich scene 😅

UnctuousUnicorns · 27/04/2026 12:03

Cheese savoury on granary/multigrain bread. 😋

QforCucumber · 27/04/2026 12:03

Either proper sliced butchers Ham with Egg Mayo, or recently I've been obsessed with a sesame seed bagel, pesto, mayo, rocket, balsamic, chicken and mozzarella. Using the leftover roast chicken from Sunday lunch seems to get me 2 of these a week and I cant get enough of it.

yes. Even in McDonalds you get that. The McOz or Aussie Angus burger. It has both beetroot and pineapple.

Last time I was in Australia I went a bit mad over it. (Plus the dim sim which I simply cannot get enough of. I've turned vegetarian since then though sadly!)

ACIGC · 27/04/2026 12:07

Chicken, avocado, beetroot and mayonnaise. Maybe a bit of thinly sliced cheese.
