What outrageously expensive household item would you buy if money were no object?

I'd like solid silver cutlery. I have actually considered getting a couple of place settings, just for me. Also, Herend porcelain but I am so accident-prone, I wouldn't dare.

What would you buy?

Thanks to Mumsnet, this week I discovered the existence of £10,000 duvets.

Mind blowing.

A shower I saw in the late 90s for £30k. It was amazing. It had seats, mood lighting, a ledge to put your foot on for shaving your legs, you could sit in the bottom as a bath, it had a tv….

Really though, I’d mostly like staff. Or a robot.

Yes, a weekly cleaner would be great. Or even more often!

Thermamix. I have wanted one for years but can’t bring myself to spend the money

A friend sells these so I now know quite a few people with them. Nobody has bought a takeaway since getting one and the only ready meal has been the very occasional pizza. I reckon they've already recouped their money! 😀

Someone who would decide what was for dinner, that everyone would eat, do the shopping and the clearing up. I don’t mind the actual cooking.

someone to do the laundry and put it away .

if 1 person could do both these jobs, even better.

Just staff really.

An army of robot vacuums. I’ve got one but it’s not enough!

Our single one is ok for us, but DS1 has three. One on the first floor which is carpeted, then one on the carpeted top floor and a really fancy one which mops and dries the hard downstairs floors.
Kitchenaids: have a look at the part of the Amazon site which offers reconditioned or returned items. We have had various things from there, all in perfect condition. You would never know they are second hand, most presumably returned because the colour did not quite suit.

Top of the range hi fi system and a lovely collection of vinyl records to play on it.

Moonlightdust · 02/03/2026 20:38

100% a really expensive comfortable bed with the most luxurious quality bedding so I felt like I was sleeping on a cloud every night.

How do I find that section?

I second this. I have one and it’s worth every cent.

Yesterday I’d have said a luxury bath.
Today, nuclear bunker…

You honestly wouldn't want to survive a nuclear war.

firstofallimadelight · 03/03/2026 07:07

A smeg fridge and a robot vacuum

It’s called Amazon Renewals.
i just had a look, lots of robot vacs there all prices and makes.
I couldn't see a Kitchenaid, but the Kenwood Kmix is on the main site, £225 -229 depending on colour. That’s the one we have and it is excellent.

Witknit · 03/03/2026 13:54

A really good whippy ice-cream maker.
A cancer patient of mine had one when her mouth was very sore and it was the best thing ever

Comtesse · 03/03/2026 16:00

Silver cutlery is really really nice. It doesn’t have to be solid, the plated stuff is lovely too. The one thing I hope my PIL leave to us (they have tons)…..

With money no object- a ridiculously beautiful Jamb hanging globe to light my reading room. But all of the budget was spent on bookshelves so ended up with a cheap Moroccan lantern. It makes me sad every day and I know the Jamb version would have been a delight even though I couldn't have afforded to switch it on.

We too inherited Old English pattern silver from late 18th and early 19th centuries. It needs the occasional polish but is otherwise zero maintenance and we have never used anything else for eating, it's lovely.

Antique almost anything is much cheaper than new so hardly ever needs to be hugely extravagant. You could buy a very nice baby grand piano at auction for the price of that hanging globe....

My mum always used to say this was well tacky but I’ve always always wanted one of them globe booze cabinets. The ones that like open and they’re a cocktail station? So we have a 1970s replica one in our house that my mum makes fun of all the time, but I’d love an OG one.

Also, windows that open inwards like they do in Europe. Surely there will be a UK manufacturer that could start making windows like this?

We have some inwards opening windows. Just a no brand local manufacturer too. I want to say escape windows but don’t recall the technical term.

A truly fantastic swing garden seat with all the bells and whistles, I have wanted a seat like this since I was four years old when I sat in one at my grandfather’s boss’s house. Each time I move I say that now is the time but it never happened.

Engineeredit · 06/03/2026 12:41

A tree house. It’s my hearts desire.
