What outrageously expensive household item would you buy if money were no object?

I'd like solid silver cutlery. I have actually considered getting a couple of place settings, just for me. Also, Herend porcelain but I am so accident-prone, I wouldn't dare.

What would you buy?

Herend porcelain comes up for sale at auctions quite often at far less than it costs to buy in the shops - try the-saleroom.com. I agree about the breakage risks - it’s a dilemma: use beautiful china and risk it being broken or don’t use it so it sits in the cupboard.

@LaurieFairyCake
Regency Chinese writing desk. There’s one keeps appearing in Bridgerton - absolutely lovely it

These, and less expensive copies and reproductions come up for sale at auctions regularly for much less than in antique shops. As I mentioned in earlier post, try the-saleroom.com.
Do you want an English writing desk in the Chinese style, or one made in China?

An original Eames lounge chair and foot stool.

Me too!

SequinnedMac · 01/03/2026 11:04

A dishwasher would be a good start but we don’t have any room for one, so on that trail of thought, I’d like a kitchen extension. Then I’d buy some HexClad frying pans. I’d also get proper fitted blinds. We have lots of windows and some are an odd shape, it’s too £££ to get fitted blinds for all and decent curtains cost an arm and a leg too!

A swimming pond . A balcony and a super duper coffee machine.

ReluctantCustomer · 01/03/2026 11:16

I’d like an onsen, please.

Olive567 · 01/03/2026 11:18

Amy kitchen is 2m x 2m but I got a slimline dishwasher in it. There are also countertop ones. Never say never!

Our kitchen is a well funny shape and trust me, if there was space for any kind of dishwasher, we'd have one.

As it is, I make do with DH.😁

Lorrymum · 01/03/2026 11:38

Not an item but a person. A lovely, old fashioned, live in house keeper (think Mrs Hall, All Creatures Great and Small).

ghostyslovesheets · 01/03/2026 11:38

A robot vacuum cleaner

a fancy slushy maker for cocktails

a gardener

rip out my shitty conservatory and replace with a proper laundry room

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 01/03/2026 11:39

Fantasy-William Morris curtains, floor to ceiling bookcases, self cleaning bathroom, Egyptian cotton bedding, a hobby room, a fold down desk with shelves for all my pens and stationery.
Reality-new damp proof course. Hate spending money on essential non visible or aesthetically pleasing things.

Anxietyspiral · 01/03/2026 11:40

Garden room to run my business from. It would have to be soundproof and smellproof to block out the neighbours music and weed fumes.

MagpiePi · 01/03/2026 11:46

A housekeeper, a chef and a gardener.

macshoto · 01/03/2026 11:55

Japanese Washlet toilet
A new Eurocave wine fridge (20 year old one expiring)
De Sede sofas (already have a DS151 chaise longue)
Roche Bobois rugs

and… if I’m allowed a structural one, some proper lighting design - having lived in a house that had properly designed lighting in the past, I miss it!

CherryShiner77 · 01/03/2026 12:01

I’d buy one of those £700 self cleaning cat litter trays that looks like a mini cement mixer!

Kelim · 01/03/2026 12:29

Apart from all the boring things I need like a new roof, windows, flood door, booooo, for fittings I'd love a fitted wardrobe as I literally have a gaping hole where one used to be - just bare plaster and hanging wires, and curtains that go all round one side of the room because there's so much stone in my house, bare stone walls, and it's not cosy.

I'd get a robot hoover and mop together where the mop spins round and polishes the floor. A Sage barista with the cold brew setting. A sparkling water tap (I already have a boiling water tap and it is brilliant). I'd get one of those all in one oven, microwave, air fryer appliances cause I don't like stuff out.

Basically as soon as something costs more than £500 it's marked in my head as outrageous and I don't buy it, even if I maybe could afford to these days. I just am so used to having no money and I've not adapted my habits. Spending £500 on something I don't actually need gives me the fear.

I think that's it. A big rug maybe that actually covers more of the stone floor. Why are big rugs so expensive. A grand at least and they're not even nice!

BackinRed101 · 01/03/2026 16:20

First, a very fancy bathroom a high‑end, spa‑style bathroom with polished stone surfaces, warm ambient lighting, a deep soaking tub, a rainfall or multi‑jet shower, heated flooring, premium fixtures, and neatly arranged luxury toiletries. The whole space feels calm, elegant, and designed for comfort.

Then, a fully kitted‑out office a professional workspace filled with multiple monitors, high‑performance computers, organised server racks, clean cable management, ergonomic seating, and subtle LED lighting. It’s set up for smooth technical work, productivity, and continuous operation.

Then, a bunker a reinforced underground space built for stability and essential operations, with secure construction, reliable power, and a simple layout that supports long‑term durability

Comtesse · 01/03/2026 16:30

I would like plantation shutters.

And maybe a 1950s juke box with a whole load of amazing 7” records, oh yeah that would be great. DH would rather have a pinball machine though….

Dawnb19 · 01/03/2026 18:17

A big jacuzzi bath. I'd need a bigger bathroom to fit it in though. 🤔

If we are talking objects rather than renovations, I would love some Rimowa suitcases.

I have a matt black Rimowa Salsa beauty case, which I love. I’ve had it for quite a few years, and they now cost more secondhand on eBay than I paid for it new. I would also like a full size suitcase……

DilemmaDelilah · 01/03/2026 18:25

A swimming pool. I'd need a bigger garden to put it in, which means a different house, but definitely a heated, indoor swimming pool.

MedievalNun · 01/03/2026 18:26

One of the bean to cup machines with all the bells and whistles on it. I’m a coffee addict and that would be amazing.

oh and underfloor heating.

MMUmum · 01/03/2026 18:46

Boudy · 28/02/2026 20:48

Kitchenaid stand mixer...I really really want one!

Me too, wanted one for years, it's on my lottery win list 😃

WhitePudding · 01/03/2026 18:49

A swimming pool.
My own gym.
A gardener.
A decent builder.
An instant hot water tap.
Air conditioning.

poetryandwine · 01/03/2026 19:00

A big La Cornue induction range cooker, and a full set of Demeyere Atlantis pots and pans to use on it. I would also change my hodge podge of Le Creuset to the lovely new blue colour, because why not?
