What outrageously expensive household item would you buy if money were no object?

I'd like solid silver cutlery. I have actually considered getting a couple of place settings, just for me. Also, Herend porcelain but I am so accident-prone, I wouldn't dare.

What would you buy?

If you've got a bit of spare benchtop, you can get a smallish dishwasher that sits on your benchtop. Doesn't require separate plumbing - I did it myself. You get a switcher that goes onto your tap.

For me, the main advantage is that I don't need to bend over as I have lots of joint problems. I learnt my lesson with my front loading washing machine. Love my top loader.

There is no spare worktop space unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestion though.

A £10k eider down duvet from John Lewis (see other thread)...

A very large dressing room. A garden that was lovingly tended to by my lovely dad. This isn’t one that is very expensive, it's priceless.

A good cleaner who wouldn't mind cleaning tho oven properly!

I would replace all my kitchenware with a full range of Le Creuset everything. Ooh, and one of those unnecessarily expensive hot chocolate velvetizers, plus a Smeg fridge.

I hope you've got strong wrists and arthritis-free fingers to cope with Le Creuset! I won three pans/casseroles and don't use them any more because they're so ridiculously heavy!

ErinBell01 · 02/03/2026 01:04

I'd like one of those taps that has boiling water

Fantasy-William Morris curtains, floor to ceiling bookcases, self cleaning bathroom, Egyptian cotton bedding, a hobby room, a fold down desk with shelves for all my pens and stationery.
Reality-new damp proof course. Hate spending money on essential non visible or aesthetically pleasing things.

ah this is lovely

FantasyFoodhall · 02/03/2026 03:55

Antique library steps
Also glass fronted shelves instead of the normal ones I have now, so I don’t have to keep dusting books!
In reality- new windows

Regency Chinese writing desk. There’s one keeps appearing in Bridgerton - absolutely lovely it

Balzac sofa, Matthew Hilton

Build in bookcases the height of my 12 foot room with library ladders on a brass rail. I would DIE for this

Built in bookcases are the dream! Fortunately DP agrees so maybe one day it might happen 🤞

Keep your eye out on the charity shops!

Kitchenaid stand mixer...I really really want one!

I got mine off Facebook marketplace, it turned out she was an old school teacher of my daughter’s who passed away. She gave it to me ultra cheap. I use it every day.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 02/03/2026 05:15

My house already has too much stuff.
My object would be a skip to chuck everything out and finally live my minimalist dreams

Sadworld23 · 02/03/2026 07:01

Hrft but I've seen this heavy duty robot mower that would work on our over run garden..

I don't think it's on sale yet but it's advertised £2k plus so I'm back to my £25 strimmer for now.

SnowRose1 · 02/03/2026 07:03

Tezza1, what’s your top loader like? Can I ask what brand it is? Does it jump around when on spin?

ShodAndShadySenators · 02/03/2026 07:14

Electric shutters. We had them on a holiday villa one year. Pressing the switch down and watching them glide serenely up or down was strangely theraputic. No doubt they were installed for security rather than helping to keep the rooms shaded but they worked so well for that too. Mind you we don't have many large patio type door/windows to make it worthwhile but if we did, I would.

ShodAndShadySenators · 02/03/2026 07:20

Also, windows that open inwards like they do in Europe. Surely there will be a UK manufacturer that could start making windows like this?

I’ve seen that cabinet in J Lewis a few years ago for about £450!

Definitely, definitely solid silver cutlery.

A Sage coffee machine, a KitchenAid mixer. A wonderful bathroom with a bath, which we don’t have and I desperately miss one.
A new very expensive mattress . My current one gives me backache.
A housekeeper to cook all meals, do all the housework and organise my life.

Fogwood · 02/03/2026 08:12

A sauna in the garden. And expensive cutlery glasses and crockery, as what I eat out of and drink out of do give me such pleasure. I have been known to choose cafes based on what they serve my drink in!

springtome · 02/03/2026 08:59

I really want a full le creuset pan set. My husband doesn’t want to spend that much. I had a pan set I bought at uni that lasted about 15 years but we have had 3 sets in the last ten.

Nothungrycat · 02/03/2026 09:11

An aga. Since I'd have to move house to fit one in, I could then have a swimming pond. With a little rill running into it, and a full-sized orchard. And still have space for a nice herbaceous border.

Rosesarere · 02/03/2026 09:14

Thermamix. I have wanted one for years but can’t bring myself to spend the money

MrsPositivity1 · 02/03/2026 09:26

Someone who would decide what was for dinner, that everyone would eat, do the shopping and the clearing up. I don’t mind the actual cooking.

someone to do the laundry and put it away .

if 1 person could do both these jobs, even better.

FindingMeno · 02/03/2026 10:16

One of those gold floor standing palm tree lamps and some really really good, big, artificial kentia palms as I cammot keep the real things alive.
Also a full mirrored wall here and there.
Please and thank you.

FindingMeno · 02/03/2026 10:18

Oh, and wooden shutters on the windows, and a statue in the garden.

I'd settle for a new back door and the last two double glazed windows. I've been quoted £1,800 !

I live in a converted listed building. My neighbour paid £5k for two custom made double glazed windows. I'd need four.....it's not going to happen is it? 😥

😂😂😂😂

it’s good to see a successful person spending money well!
