What outrageously expensive household item would you buy if money were no object?

I'd like solid silver cutlery. I have actually considered getting a couple of place settings, just for me. Also, Herend porcelain but I am so accident-prone, I wouldn't dare.

What would you buy?

A chef, please.
I'm so sick of cooking.

poetryandwine · 01/03/2026 19:01

A chef would be an acceptable alternative, @cornflakecrunchie !

That John Lewis £10,000 duvet on the other thread.

🤣 although 😱 at the price.

I'd love a really fancy coffee machine

I would replace all my kitchenware with a full range of Le Creuset everything. Ooh, and one of those unnecessarily expensive hot chocolate velvetizers, plus a Smeg fridge.

I’m just getting rid of all of my le creuset. It’s just too bloody heavy.

Arraminta · 01/03/2026 19:09

I have a study with large, oak, free standing bookcases but I would love to upgrade to bespoke, built in bookcases with a rolling library ladder.

A beautifully restored gypsy caravan sitting in a corner of the garden. It would be furnished with vintage linens, fairy-lights, a patchwork eiderdown and a ceramic, potbelly stove.

I have a small dressing room and would love to brick up its door onto the landing. The only access to it would be through the back of the big old wardrobe in our guest room (or 'spare oom'). I'd get someone to remove the back of the wardrobe and the part of the wall behind. Then I'd hang second hand, long fur coats in the wardrobe.

A genuine, Georgian burled walnut bureau with secret compartments. I have a reproduction one but it's not the same.

A Thermomix. Without a shadow of a doubt.

Dutchhouse14 · 01/03/2026 19:14

An original artwork
New sofas from sofas&stuff

A swimming pool. Seriously a luxury.

Not a specific item but I’d always have an abundance of fresh flowers and expensive candles

Elton?

BobbySox71 · 01/03/2026 19:34

Granite worktops and a kitchenaid. I like to bake so maybe 1 to 1 sessions with Mary Berry too 😊

railcardfan · 01/03/2026 19:41

A heated indoor swimming pool long enough to do lengths in.

Empress13 · 01/03/2026 19:41

Given all the rain recently and a large breed dog a self cleaning tiled kitchen floor!

A heated indoor swimming pool long enough to do lengths in.

It isn't just the cost of building it, the running costs...
But yes, imagine a daily swim.

HarryVanderspeigle · 01/03/2026 19:44

A golden pineapple. Real gold, no bronze imitation.

damelza · 01/03/2026 19:45

If such a thing exists, I'd love a stand up full body blow dryer to use instead of a towel after the shower. Is there something like that out there, for when I win the lottery ha.

A Japanese toilet that washes and dries your bum and plays sounds to hide ‘noises’.

My friend has one of these. She turns it off when I visit otherwise it terrifies the living daylights out of me!

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 01/03/2026 19:49

Not really a household item.
But l would have a heated indoor swimming pool.

If l money was no object, l would love in a hotel suite.

I'd like a dishwasher, but the kitchen isn't big enough, and the garden isn't big enough to extend the kitchen so I guess I'd just have to buy a bigger house first, then buy the dishwasher to go in it. 😂

If you've got a bit of spare benchtop, you can get a smallish dishwasher that sits on your benchtop. Doesn't require separate plumbing - I did it myself. You get a switcher that goes onto your tap.

For me, the main advantage is that I don't need to bend over as I have lots of joint problems. I learnt my lesson with my front loading washing machine. Love my top loader.

Electric Roman blinds, programmed to go up and down with sunset and sunrise in my living room, so they work if I'm away and it isn't blindingly obvious I'm not in.

Ooh this.
I couldn’t think of anything but this is such a good idea I’m going to say this!

I’ve ALWAYS wanted a Smeg fridge, love them.

Really unreliable but a thing of beauty, similar to a Dualit toaster

WHAT !!!!

EatAllDay · 01/03/2026 21:06

Not an item but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a cleaner. Or a cleaner who cooks. A house keeper !!

MaddestGranny · 01/03/2026 21:08

If money were no object, I'd get my very little terraced house fixed up properly. I'd get all of the many cracks sorted and have a total redec (in same off-white colours), with someone else doing ALL the preps, i.e. dresser-shelf-emptying/ packing; book-shelf emptying/packing; surfaces clearing/packing, furniture moving, etc., and the same in reverse when redecs completed.

Then I'd have my v. tiny garden re-scoped by a very good landscape gardener, to include under-planting with many & various bulbs, which would come up year on year, thus ensuring max garden pleasure with min effort.
Somewhere in the mix, interpolated in a timely way, I'd have solar panels + batteries installed. And, while we're at it, I'd go all-electric, having my gas-hob (tho' I love it) uninstalled in favour of an induction hob.
My aim: to end up with pretty much what I've already got, but properly spruced up and future ready.

I’m just getting rid of all of my le creuset. It’s just too bloody heavy.

Ha, I had a lot of Le Creuset given to me by my parents when it was last fashionable in the 80s. I eventually gave it all away as it was so bloody heavy, particularly the big pans.

My item would be a proper stone-built outdoor bread & pizza oven - and maybe to move my house to a climate where you could use it all year round.
