Do you drink much/any water?

I don’t. I’m a complete Coke Zero addict. I have approximately 4 cans a day but could easily have more if I wasn’t thinking about it. I’m trying to cut back and im trying to up my water intake. It’s not easy but for me it’s just breaking the habit.

am I alone? Does everyone else drink lots of water and never have any fizzy drink?

@dogsandbudgeyI used to be a huge Fanta addict! Gave it up 8 weeks ago and don’t miss it in the slightest. I opened a can the other day and couldn’t believe how ‘fake’ and horrible it tasted. I treated myself to one of those Stanley cups, now I refill it about 20 times a day with water and ice. I’m never without my water cup now!

florenceandthemac · 28/07/2025 22:49

I drink loads of water (although I only start drinking it in an afternoon, unless I’ve been to the gym in the morning. I drink coffee in a morning).
But I’ll only drink icy cold water so I have to take a Stanley/flask everywhere with me with large ice cubes and freezing water in it. I can’t drink as much if it’s not that cold

It would be advisable to drink water more often and less coke. It isn't a matter of how many calories.

Water is not only the best hydrant, but it passes through the body without putting a strain on the kidneys and bladder. The liver function removes the 'toxins' from whatever we eat and drink, and which do the body no good, and send them to the kidneys to complete the waist process. If you drink more water and less coke, it takes some of the pressure off the liver and kidneys, and prevents inflammation of the bladder, which can lead to cystitis, and we all know what that is, don't we?

I can't recall the last time I had any kind of fizzy drink, even with a pub meal. At home all I drink is squash and coffee and if I go to a pub for dinner I'll have a J2O or other juice.
I hate the feeling fizzy drinks makes my teeth feel. Can't wait to brush them afterwards. That's a telltale sign of what's in them surely.
Also, someone I know of was addicted to fizzy drinks and ended up with diabetes.
But... each to their own. Not here to lecture.

Magpie50 · 29/07/2025 03:21

I usually have 6-7 giant mugs of coffee a day, rarely think about water.
I used to be addicted to diet coke and drank about 2l a day but I managed to wean myself off it.

mathanxiety · 29/07/2025 03:45

I drink at least 32 fl oz of still water daily. I also drink fizzy water, and a pot of tea (about three mugs).

Yes I’ve also heard you can deplete your body of electrolytes by drinking too much.

But actually most people don't drink enough water, I have chronic kidney disease which is more common than you might think.

Google it! See what Kidney specialists recommend to drink.
I'm CKD type 3/2 caused probably by dehydration on a background of prescription NSAID.

I know plenty people drank more fizzy pop, lile 10 cans a day! usually CC or Pepsi, it's mainly the caffeine that was difficult to give up.
These days though, the sweeteners would be worrying to me as so many are associated with negative health.

I very rarely have a fizzy drink ( even fizzy water )because for me they just cause hiccups / reflux .
I am occasionally tempted by those little Italian non alcoholic aperitivo drinks like Sanbitters but I regret that later on 😂
I usually just have still water / tap water if I want a cold drink .
I do like coffee and will have 2 per day , if it’s warm weather I might have one of my coffees as an ice coffee but with only a half pump of plain syrup since I dislike sugary drinks .
I also like all types of tea including herbal infusions , I don’t take milk or sugar in them .
what you might like is if you infuse plain water with lemon 🍋 lime 🍋‍🟩 or cucumber 🥒 I find that really refreshing

DancingLions · 29/07/2025 10:33

I never drink water. If it's the only drink on offer, I just won't drink.

I drink tea, normal and fruit type, coffee, fruit juice, sometimes a milkshake or smoothie. The only fizzy drink I'll drink really is lemonade, find the others too sweet, the very occasional coke (if it comes in a glass bottle). But never from plastic bottles, as I feel it does something to the taste.

If I'm feeling really dehydrated, I'll have a glass of grapefruit juice. I find that so much more refreshing than water.

RampantIvy · 29/07/2025 11:47

Mumsnetters are a thirsty lot.
So far today I have had two cups of tea and one coffee. It is a cool and damp day where I am and I just don't crave a cold drink of any kind.

purplecorkheart · 29/07/2025 11:52

I am pretty good at drinking water when I am at work. I have one coffee in the morning and then drink water during the day at my desk. I take sips through out the day. In the evenings I tend to drink less though. I will have maybe a couple of fizzy drinks during the week but not more than that.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 29/07/2025 11:58

How are your teeth? Mine would be fucked on 4 cans of coke a day, never mind my blood sugar and digestive system!

During the summer I’ll drink more cold water to help keep cool. Otherwise I drink tea, coffee and water throughout the day. DH is addicted to Diet Coke so we have a constant supply at home, I’ll have the odd one now and again. Interestingly, we were in Slovenia a couple of years ago and noticed we couldn’t buy Diet Coke there at all. We don’t know for sure but presumed at the it was due to being a carcinogenic….not sure how accurate this is though!

Bacon is carcinogenic and I’m sure they sell that

I drink a minimum of 4 litres water a day, but I don’t actively try to do this, I’ve just always drank a lot of water. I didn’t think 4litres was actually that much until reading this thread and realising it’s quite a bit more than most people!

I absolutely ADORE Pepsi, but would never have more than one can a day and have pretty much given it up the past few years. Try swapping to fizzy water with a dash of strong fruit juice like pomegranate juice.

I’m amazed that people can drink so little water and so much caffeine through tea, coffee, coke and not get headaches daily.

Ime it’s not having the caffeine that would cause headaches ie caffeine withdrawal! Not good though obviously.

It may be that people saying they drink a lot of tea and coffee and including decaf in that. I don’t drink water, mainly drink hot drinks but include a lot of decaf during the day and especially evening.

lilkitten · 29/07/2025 15:47

I'm 47, I drink mostly espresso. I have one Diet Coke with dinner. I'll occasionally stick a glass of water next to my coffee to encourage me to have a bit but I'm generally ok. I'm ADHD and don't feel thirst, I drink coffee for the taste so it's always a push to try and drink anything. I'm only thirsty when it's really hot.

fussychica · 29/07/2025 17:43

Drink numerous glasses of water plus several cups of tea and coffee daily. The only fizzy drink I have is tonic(tiny can) in a G&T a couple of times a week. Never drink squash.
I do like a full fat coke occasionally on holiday to pep me up if I feel sluggish on a very hot afternoon but that's about it.

janj52301 · 10/08/2025 19:55

I only drink tap water, occassionaly with a little robinsons squash in it. Always order tap water when eating out and carry a thermos cup of tap water when out and about
