Do you drink much/any water?

I don’t. I’m a complete Coke Zero addict. I have approximately 4 cans a day but could easily have more if I wasn’t thinking about it. I’m trying to cut back and im trying to up my water intake. It’s not easy but for me it’s just breaking the habit.

am I alone? Does everyone else drink lots of water and never have any fizzy drink?

I drink a lot of squash (well, powdered 'natural' squash sachet things - supposedly better than my previous Vimto habit), probably 2ltr a day, and then I take a tumbler of ice water to bed with me which gets drunk while I'm reading or first thing in the morning.

Our tap water is horrible which is my excuse for the flavourings (but it's really just that I'm more likely to drink it if it's flavoured). If we have limes or lemons in the house I'll squeeze that into water instead and drink that.

Butteredtoast55 · 27/07/2025 20:38

I drink at least a litre of water every day (filtered tap water), also black coffee in the morning, a cup of tea around 5pm, a latte at least once a week and the occasional soft drink. I like lime and soda. I never drink 'pop' or coke etc just because it tends to bloat me up. But nothing beats a lovely cold glass of water.

MonGrainDeSel · 27/07/2025 20:43

I drink a couple of cups of coffee in the morning and often have a glass of orange juice with my breakfast but apart from that it's just water. I like water. I also have it with one of those bottles where you can put some fruit/flavourings in the middle. I really like lemon/lime and fresh mint water. Orange also works well and even things like apple and pear. I don't really like most fizzy drinks. I'll have a full fat sugary coke or Dr Pepper about twice or three times a year when I really fancy it but would never think to drink it daily.

ilovesooty · 27/07/2025 20:44

I haven't drunk much water until recently but after a recent health scare I now aim for between 2 and 3 litres a day. I have three different water bottles chilling at different times.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 27/07/2025 20:44

Apologies if someone has already mentioned (I read most but not all the thread) - but to wean yourself off and encourage more water could you try an air up bottle with cola flavour capsule??

mrsm43s · 27/07/2025 20:47

I make sure that I listen to my body and don't get thirsty. I make sure I have all the fluid I need to stay healthy. This mostly comes from food, tea & coffee and sugar free squash. I don't care for plain water, so don't drink it at all. I also v v rarely drink fizzy drinks, only really as mixers with alcohol.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 27/07/2025 20:49

I am at the minute as I've got a kidney stone and want to get it out! Have stopped drinking Coke and am only drinking water/lemon. I need to try to keep it up afterwards though, to avoid new ones forming.

Waterrry · 27/07/2025 20:49

I only really drink water or coffee. I couldn’t really imagine what else people might drink, but after reading the thread I realise I’m not very imaginative! 😂

Elbowpatch · 27/07/2025 20:51

I rarely drink water and I don’t drink fizzy drinks.

KatieDidIt · 27/07/2025 21:21

I had an awful diet of a coffee in the morning then can upon can of energy drinks. I couldn’t settle if I had less than 8 cans in the fridge. Often having to go to the local late night shop to top up what was already in the fridge. I had been doing this for at least 8 years or so.

However, a water infection last November changed all that. I did some research on my drink choices and decided to change.

I bought a Stanley cup. It is now my best friend. It goes everywhere with me. Although plain water is still a no no. I’m happily getting through 3 - 4 litres of diluted squash every day. No coffee, but an occasional cup of tea, (when I fancy dunking biscuits.) 😝

it was hard at the beginning, I became very poorly and the Dr said the sudden upping of my fluid intake had flushed electrolytes out of my body. Once diagnosed, I started adding some electrolyte tablets. All sorted now.

Some 8 months later, I feel energised, my skin is perfect and very supple. I feel really energised, and my eyes seem to sparkle. No more need for electrolyte tablets for a good while now. All in all one of the best choices I have ever made.

As for people saying it makes them pee more, I found that yes, in the beginning I was constantly in the bathroom. But, over a month or two my body adjusted, and I no longer needed to pee so often. I found i peed a lot more but much less often. So please allow time, your bladder should adjust.

I only drink water really.... Well, one coffee with breakfast, then a latte at around 11am, then water for the rest of the day. (Including with my evening meal.) Maybe 1.5 to 2 litres a day. More when it's hot and dry weather.

I don't usually drink fizzy drinks because I'm a grown up. I drink my water in the form of tea or coffee, and water as well.

Huh? There’s no age limit on fizzy drinks, and I certainly don’t encourage them for my children.

jill5676 · 27/07/2025 21:41

I mostly drink tea, currently decaf/herbal teas as pregnant. Drink more water on working days than I do at weekends as I don't have as much access to a kettle in the office. Rarely drink alcohol so will have fizzy drinks as a treat or out at a restaurant. Not a fan of Coke but love Appletise and san Pellegrino lemon.

Maybe I live a sheltered life but the people saying they don’t EVER drink water are blowing my mind. What do you drink when you’re really thirsty? (Doesn’t squash or fizzy stuff make your mouth drier?) Or when you wake at night and need a drink? Or when you have just brushed your teeth and your mouth is all minty? Or if you were having a really tasty / flavoursome meal? (Ie if you weren’t having wine - would you still have something sweet / fizzy with a really tasty meal?)

Fizzy drinks are extremely thirst-quenching - why would a drink that’s 99% water make your mouth dry? Would always opt for a fizzy drink with a meal unless I’m having wine; I usually go for the caffeine-free one. I keep a glass of weak sugar-free squash beside my bed in case I need a drink in the night. But I rarely get thirsty, unless I’ve been exercising strenuously, and if I do it’s never water I want.

Titsywoo · 27/07/2025 21:51

Apart from alcohol all I drink is water. I love it and would feel like shit drinking fizzy drinks all day.

JoannaFogg · 27/07/2025 20:27

No one loves water, in the same way no one loves green beans. But you have to drink it. Drinking fizzy drinks all day is wild, good luck trying to cut down.

I do actually love water but think your brain needs to be recalibrated to not expect a sugar hit/flavour. Now that my brain has been rewired, I guzzle water all day without making an effort. I just really enjoy everything about it!

Middlemarch123 · 27/07/2025 21:53

I drink a litre a day of filtered tap water and a litre of sparkling bottled water every day, on top of a mug of coffee and two big mugs of tea. Then soft drinks in the evening, A glass of lemonade or a Pepsi Max. I think fizzy drinks are ok in moderation, as long as 80% of liquid is water.

Berlinlover · 27/07/2025 21:55

I was addicted to fizzy drinks until I had stoma surgery due to cancer nearly two years ago. My stoma was reversed last year and I can’t tolerate fizzy drinks now. I don’t miss them. I drink coffee, water and squash.

Darkdiamond · 27/07/2025 21:57

A point about squash. I don't drinkit, just plain water, but when I do, I feel like it gives me a headache. I notice when my children (who normally drink lots of water) consume it, they are constantly running to the toilet. There is something in it that I really don't like and never feel as hydrated when I drink the same amount of squash as plain water.

I really do love water! I wouldn’t say I love green beans but I really like them.

lincoln75 · 27/07/2025 22:00

I don't drink water at all. Can't remember the last time I might of had some. The only drinks I have are tea, coke zero and wine

icebearforpresident · 27/07/2025 22:00

I have a Coke Zero or Pepsi max with dinner and apart from that hydrate exclusively with tea - about 10 (massive) cups a day.

SockQueen · 27/07/2025 22:07

On a normal day, I'll drink about 1-1.5L of plain tap water. 2-3 coffees/teas. More water if it's hot. Our water is very hard and some people don't like the taste but I genuinely don't mind it at all.

I never routinely have fizzy drinks at home. Occasionally will if I'm out for a meal etc. They're just not something I'm particularly into. I have plenty of other flaws in my diet, but on the drinks front I think I'm doing ok!

Judellie · 27/07/2025 22:08

I detest fizzy drinks and I'm teetotal; only ever drink tapwater, tea or coffee. The very occasional iced tea.
I'm a chocolate addict tho.......

Doitrightnow · 27/07/2025 22:10

I never drank loads of fizzy drinks, but did drink a lot of squash and fruit juice. I challenged myself to drink nothing but water for a month about a decade ago. It was really hard but now I drink 80% water and 20% fruit juice. I don't have squash in the house anymore and actively dislike fizzy pop as I feel really bloated.

I don't like any of hot drinks or alcohol either.

I know someone obese who only drank diet coke. She quit cold turkey and lost loads of weight!
