Does anyone else feel secretly sad when winter ends?! 🤭

I realise I'm probably in an extreme minority! But, I absolutely love both autumn and winter. I love spring too; and the early spring weather today is glorious. But, I can't help but feel slightly melancholic when winter ends. The way many people do when summer ends. Does anyone else relate to this?

Nope. Glad to see the back of it and get back to sunny days in the garden.

DappledThings · 08/03/2025 14:29

Yes. And you're not the only one. There are fairly regular threads on a similar theme.

I like it when it's dark out for longer. Feels more restful. And it's a nice 16 degrees here today. Anything over 20 and I get tense

I don't have a garden of my own. It's possibly why I get a bit melancholic? I should look into getting an allotment maybe...

Ah, I didn't realise there'd been many other similar threads. Glad I'm not alone! Yes, it's lovely weather today. Hopefully it won't get any warmer for a while though!

Some years I do, if I’m not at a weight where I feel comfortable shedding layers of clothes.

Ah! I'm actually never confident shedding layers of clothes, regardless of my weight, and I'm a healthy weight. I just love being covered up. Love polo necks and cosy tights, scarves and hats. I far prefer winter clothes.

I don't like how the sunshine shows up the dusty corners!

@OhamIreally yes I’m with you there - I find it easier to host in the dark winter months as guests can’t see the dirt!

I also prefer winter clothes OP.

Greycatblueeyes · 08/03/2025 14:38

Yes me! I feel exactly like this! I think ‘oh no!’ As the evenings and mornings get lighter! I like the dark! I like cosiness!

However, I do prefer driving in the evening when it’s still light, so I appreciate that. And warmer days like today are nice too.

There are pluses and minuses to each season, but my favorites are Autumn first, then winter, then spring, then summer. Summer is the worst as I hate it when it’s too hot, and hate going to bed when it’s still light ( I go to bed early).

I think mine is the same order of preference - autumn, winter, spring, summer. Though autumn and winter possibly joint first. Summer is unquestionably my least favourite! I actually dread it!

No. This isn't me. I'm always delighted when winter ends and the weather starts to improve.

I love the start of British Summer Time, which is at the end of this month.

I tend to feel as you describe as summertime draws to a close (meaning when clocks go back again at the end of October). It's the long, dark nights and short days that I find depressing. After we've gone past the winter solstice on around 22nd December I start to feel a little stirring of hope again.

GroovyChick87 · 08/03/2025 14:42

Autumn and winter are my favourite seasons and I hate being hot and sweaty but I try to find the positives in each season. I like mild summer weather, family days out, spending less on energy bills, not being freezing of an evening and big thunderstorms you only get in summer. I think it makes me appreciate the cooler months more when it's been a boiling summer.

Comedycook · 08/03/2025 14:43

Gosh no...I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I can live again!

Laiste · 08/03/2025 14:44

No. Sorry. But there are a lot of winter lovers.

I adore being able to swan out of the house and into the car in the same clothes you are mooching about in. Flip flops and shorts ect.

No fumbling around for boots and coats.

Also it's so much cleaner here in summer. We're countrysidey and autumn/winter just = fecking mud mud mud.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 08/03/2025 14:46

Yes, me. I’m dreading summer our house is so hot and I can never cool down or get to sleep.

WinterCosiness · 08/03/2025 14:46

Yes, every season definitely has its positives. I personally think family days out (and/or solitary days out) are better in every season other than summer though, as fewer crowds, and just generally more pleasant.
I even prefer the beach in autumn and winter - a whole beach to yourself!

I love all the seasons and seeing the changes - it’s wonderful to see the Daffs opening in the garden - but I adore summer. The hotter the better for me. French doors open all day long - lovely!

I’m not a sun worshipper at all. Like spring and autumn. But this year I can’t wait for long sunny days. I want my grass to dry so I can cut it. I couldn’t wait to put washing out.

GiddyRobin · 08/03/2025 14:47

I absolutely love autumn and winter, but I also really like seeing the change in the seasons. I'm rural, so the blooming of flowers and change in routine of the animals, etc. We grow a lot of our own food so that's exciting. If I had to choose, I'd live in a perpetual autumn/winter, but spring and summer bring me joy in so many ways too!

Liv999 · 08/03/2025 14:49

Yes totally! I love Autumn and Winter, don't get me wrong I like the beginning of Spring but once April is over it can all fuck off until at least September

I do find these threads fascinating and how different people react so differently to the seasons.
