Does anyone else feel secretly sad when winter ends?! 🤭

I realise I'm probably in an extreme minority! But, I absolutely love both autumn and winter. I love spring too; and the early spring weather today is glorious. But, I can't help but feel slightly melancholic when winter ends. The way many people do when summer ends. Does anyone else relate to this?

I love autumn and the run up to Christmas and I do always feel sad when that’s over, but by January I am longing for some light nights and warmer weather.

It is incredible how much my mood has lifted after getting some sunshine this past week.

Yes I feel the same. I don't like the summer sun or feeling hot. I like autumn best when it's bright and cold.

Yes! I actually get excited when summer draws to a close and the leaves are on the turn! The dawn of my happiest months is arriving! 🍃🍂🍁🍄🌰

I love the months of September to January/February. I get on edge once the lighter evenings start

JFDIYOLO · 08/03/2025 15:25

I don't like heat, sweatiness, red face, heat rash, dust, flies, glare, drought ...

I like boots, socks, tights, scarves, gloves, cosiness. That time just as Halloween, Bonfire Night are on the horizon and the leaves turn.

Nice now because it's not very warm yet and the buds are budding, which I love, and it's very green because of the rain. That happy spell before the meh of summer kicks in.

Although sitting in this cafe the sun through the window is already making my booted feet sweaty...

I'm probably very unusual in really enjoying January and February. All the pressure of Christmas 'dos' etc is over. True hibernation time!

God no! Winter is the worse thing for me. One of the reasons I left the Uk 🤣

LoveDandelions · 08/03/2025 15:26

A little. Not really, I do love shedding layers and lighter days. But there's always a part of me that enjoys the 'excuse' of winter weather to curl up with a good book, or get hooked on a PC game for a while! Summer makes me feel like I should be outside all the time 🤣

Nothatgingerpirate · 08/03/2025 15:29

Yes.
Since childhood.
And don't worry about being "in extreme minority".
The season I hate most is and always has been Spring.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 08/03/2025 15:30

I love autumn and winter and early, dark evenings! But I suppose I do like days like today as well. I think it just takes me a while to adjust.

Bryonyberries · 08/03/2025 15:30

I enjoy winter after Xmas for the hibernation phase but hate going to work and coming home in the dark and driving in ice and snow for my job. Don’t mind either if I don’t have to drive in it.

Ive loved pottering in the garden and giving the lawn its first cut for 2025 today. It looks lovely and neat and green now and all my bulbs are flowering and I’m finding the first signs of my plants starting to shoot again. I’ve always been an autumn person but I’ve started to appreciate spring more in the last few years.

frozendaisy · 08/03/2025 15:37

I think if you have to drive everyone prefers driving when it’s not dark.

I try and embrace each season because we are going to have them until we die so it seems detrimental to find ways to dislike seasons as opposed to finding some enjoyment in each.

I am liking the windows open, heating off (for a bit), more daylight, a springing into life garden, the start of seedlings, few days left of driving in the dark, lighter coats, a decent spring clean and the prospect of many days outside again.

But then I don’t complain too much about winter (although retirement plans are to split and do winter in southern Europe and summers here)

Tortielady · 08/03/2025 15:37

I'm not fond of summer. I don't like sticky heat, loads of insects, not feeling properly dressed, hay fever and having to have a fan whirring away so I can sleep. I miss my hoodies and my winter-weight duvet. But for all that, I have SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and a tendency to vitamin d deficiency and although I don't like summer, my physical and mental health improve in the sun.

flapjackfairy · 08/03/2025 15:39

I am always sad when winter ends ...but I don't make any secret of it whatsoever.
I am always happy to get to the 21st June and the nights start drawing in again .

DappledThings · 08/03/2025 15:43

I have no preference for driving when it's not dark. I'd far rather drive in the dark then anytime the sun is glaring off a wet road or just right in my eyes as it goes down.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 08/03/2025 15:43

@WinterCosiness I feel you! I'm ok once summer is actually here and the nice weather is consistent (or as consistent as can be in the UK) but I feel really despondent leaving autumn and winter behind. The author Marian Keyes once said she doesn't like spring and feels it has a malevolence to it. In a strange way I know what she means.

I do, I love winter. Comforted by the fact we will likely have some more rain days yet. It is NOT summer yet!

I live the dark evenings and snuggling up etc

MyGardenHasGreatTits · 08/03/2025 15:48

Posted earlier but reading through the thread has made me realise that Spring and Summer are definitely my seasons.

I detest hot chocolate.
Don’t like jumpers and wouldn’t leave the house in a cardigan.
Hate being cold.
Really dislike being bundled under loads of layers.
Cannot bear Christmas.

Ionut · 08/03/2025 15:49

Good god woman. Winter is fucking awful. Cold, dark, wet and depressing.

This last week of sunshine and light has been soul-lifting

BetterDeadThanRed · 08/03/2025 15:50

My favourite season is autumn, but I like winter too. My ideal day would be +12ish, overcast, no rain - perfect. Winter is also good, can deal with any cold (spend half a winter somewhere with tons of snow and -25), but not the British winter when it's dreary, semi-cold and windy and pissing down continuously.

Spring is ok, a change. Don't mind it.

HATE summer. Hate the sun, brightness, heat, sweat, dust, dryness, everyone's outside, people everywhere, hate sea and sand, yuck. Dread the start of it and can't wait for it to finally end. Will probably move somewhere like maybe Scotland or Scandinavia/Finland in the future where it's cold and dark most of the time.

Greycatblueeyes · 08/03/2025 14:38

Yes me! I feel exactly like this! I think ‘oh no!’ As the evenings and mornings get lighter! I like the dark! I like cosiness!

However, I do prefer driving in the evening when it’s still light, so I appreciate that. And warmer days like today are nice too.

There are pluses and minuses to each season, but my favorites are Autumn first, then winter, then spring, then summer. Summer is the worst as I hate it when it’s too hot, and hate going to bed when it’s still light ( I go to bed early).

Edited

This 100%!

Yes, yes and yes. It’s been great to see the sun this week, put washing out to dry and leave the winter coat at home.

I don’t care if the dust shows. I’ll take that and dust too, if it means the approach of lighter evenings and warmth.

Ihateboris · 08/03/2025 15:53

Yes! I love getting cosy in the winter with candles and throws, and cuddling up with my dogs. I also prefer dressing for winter as it's easier to keep warm than cool!

Wednesdaysotherchild · 08/03/2025 15:53

No, I feel a tangible sense of relief! Thank goodness that is over for another year…

Snuggling up with a book under a blanket. Wrapping up for a wintery walk, and returning to a bowl of homemade soup and fresh warm crusty bread followed by a hot bath and a cup of tea. Unashamedly early nights. Lovely cosy clothes in beautiful rich colours. Hot chocolate, hot chocolate, hot chocolate... An excuse to devour a box set. Low winter sun. No naked people anywhere! Happy dogs, who do not like hot weather. There's so much to love about winter! In my very humble opinion 😄

Omg.. are you my twin??

InTheBalmyMidwinter · 08/03/2025 15:56

I do. Love winter 😃
