Does anyone else feel secretly sad when winter ends?! 🤭

I realise I'm probably in an extreme minority! But, I absolutely love both autumn and winter. I love spring too; and the early spring weather today is glorious. But, I can't help but feel slightly melancholic when winter ends. The way many people do when summer ends. Does anyone else relate to this?

I used to like winter and Christmas was my favourite time of the year but like someone else said, I've had a lot of trauma over the years and I feel more anxious and depressed when it's dark. I do like crisp sunny days though.

I've always liked spring though and the first time out without a coat. Now I like spring and autumn and I like summer days that stay below 23C. I actually booked an Airbnb with air conditioning for a couple of days when it was 40C....that day felt terrifying for me because after that there was no convincing myself that we're not doomed. I think it was another year (maybe 2021?) when it stayed at around 30C in the south east for weeks and weeks and I was sleeping on dog cooling pads.

I will forever hate snow because of having to carry my dog on five inches of ice to the vets where he was pts :(.

PlumpHobbit · 08/03/2025 17:16

Yes much prefer autumn and winter, summers are too full of heatwaves for my liking, can't stand the heat, especially those long ones where no matter what you do, you can't get the house cool

I'm so sorry about your dog 😔

I love Spring,Summer and Autumn. Winter can piss off (at least after Xmas in Jan/Feb when it’s dark all of the time and cold. I love this time of year when the nights start getting lighter.

Frontroomroomjungle · 08/03/2025 17:19

I got married just before Christmas and had a lovely few weeks off afterwards, so I'm really missing winter this year. It is my favourite season, but I'm also appreciating the sunshine and green shoots coming through.

Even the thought of heatwaves makes me anxious. That song 'there's gonna be a heatwave' gives me palpitations. I'm not exaggerating!

Not me

I love living more of my life in daylight as opposed to darkness

Lottapianos · 08/03/2025 17:22

I enjoy all the seasons, although not a fan of rain or roasting hot weather. I get you OP - I hate Christmas so I absolutely love January, it's such a relief from all the suffocation of December..I find the cold really energising and I find Winter really peaceful

I do love the sun though. It's been 17 degrees in London today and it's been GORGEOUS 🌞 that said, I'm not sad at all that it will be 10 degrees colder in a few days! I do reach the point where I need a break from winter, but will be glad to have it back briefly

Ooh, is it going to be 10°C colder soon? Yippeeeee! That's made me very happy! 😊 I'm not in London though, but presume it's similar here...

I like the sun, but so do the fucking football bashing kids either side of my garden, I'd love to be able to sit in my garden in peace, not to be unfortunately.

I think summer brings a social pressure that winter doesn't. I like the hideaway nature of winter!

I absolutely love spring and summer but I have to agree with you about the social pressure aspect. 😅

CalicoPusscat · 08/03/2025 17:31

I like the non-commercial aspects of Xmas like carols, tradition etc (although having said that I enjoy gift giving. I don't expect anything in return. In fact I already have everyone's presents for this Xmas 😳) but the cold.

My radiators are tepid so I was clutching onto my hot water bottles for dear life and using the plug in heater.

I don't like the cold and dark.

Changingname1988 · 08/03/2025 17:35

Reading through the replies, most of the PPs who love winter ans autumn are mentioning activities you would do alone / at home. I know it’s not a simple dichotomy but the trend seems to be a lot of introverts love the darker months and not enjoy the social pressures in spring and summer.

I love some aspects of each season, but my commute is quite long and I spend an hour each morning and evening being blinded by those god awful modern LED headlights for 4 or 5 months of the year. Nothing any other season can throw up is as bad as that eye pain / fear I’m about to crash my car!

RampantIvy · 08/03/2025 17:36

No. I feel overjoyed. winter can go and do one. We are still behind with getting the right bins emptied after all the snow we had in January.

This is mumsnet, the home of summer haters, people with good eyesight, people who never feel cold, people who don't drive on jammed motorways in the dark in driving rain and who don't get dazzled by bright headlights.

It has been a clear sunny 16 degrees here today and I have had my bedding on the line for the first time this year. I have also repotted some plants and felt warm outside. I am very short sighted and see better in bright light.

I am looking forward to some better, brighter weather this year.

I prefer not having to wear several layers and just wear undies and a dress plus footwear when outside.

I don't want to feel claustrophobic "cosy"
I want to feel light and airy and warm.

Team summer all the way.

A fellow introvert? I think it's the solitude and peace that is key. I do wonder if winter people are more likely to be introverts? But, there are probably so many factors...

I'm very high on the introvert scale but I simply love sitting in the hot sun with a book outside my home. I have SAD so I feel better in spring.

user2848502016 · 08/03/2025 17:44

Kind of, I do love spring and it's my favourite season but I do get a bit sad when spring ends and it's proper summer - I'm rubbish in the sun because I burn, and I get hay fever and just hate being hot, and hate it when everywhere is busy. I love the beach when it's cold but on a hot day I hate it.
I'm always quite happy when September arrives!
I know the cold and dark days really affect some people so I do sympathise- but it's never bothered me

PrincessSakura · 08/03/2025 17:47

I honestly can’t wait to see the back of it!
I do suffer from S.A.D though.
I love autumn and Christmas is one of my favourite times of year due to all the lights but by January I’m often at my lowest point mentally and begin to really struggle with the cold and how dark it is.

We finally had some sun this week and it was beautiful, still far too cold for me though, I’m looking forward to spring/summer and hoping we have a nice April, I don’t function well in the cold at all and need it to be at least 20 degrees to feel comfortable!

Crunchingleaf · 08/03/2025 17:50

Fuck no. Love spring watching the colour come back in the garden, sitting outside with a cuppa listening to the birds. Evenings getting longer.
Honestly if Winter didn’t have Christmas it would be very bleak. When you work full time winter feels like constant darkness. Way too depressing for me.

Goofbawl · 08/03/2025 17:55

No. I love the excitement that comes with these first bits of Spring - flowers and leaves emerging, birds getting busy, bees making a reappearance, clear sunny days etc. Although I do love Autumn and Winter.
I actually think our seasons are perfect. Each change brings a bit of excitement and just when the current one is getting too much, the next one comes along.
I just wish we had a proper winter with proper snow, instead of bloody rain. In fact, a bit less rain overall would be fab.

Hhoudini · 08/03/2025 17:55

I absolutely love warmth, light and sun. Being outdoors today has been a huge tonic and lifted my mood immensely.

Hearing it’s going to get colder again fills me with dread.

Meadowfinch · 08/03/2025 17:55

No.

I love autumn, I enjoy Christmas, I can even remain positive for most of January, but I loathe February, Its cold, miserable, grey, dark. wet. There is nothing good about it. I am delighted to see the back of it.

Today we've been swimming, we have sunshine, daffodils and crocuses, bird song and buds on the honeysuckle. What a relief ! 😎

OhamIreally · 08/03/2025 14:36

I don't like how the sunshine shows up the dusty corners!

And that the windows need a good clean!

LlynTegid · 08/03/2025 18:24

I would like winter a lot more if we had BST all year round. Do not like it getting dark before teatime.

I tend to agree. But wouldn't the mornings be darker for a fair bit longer?

Overall though, I do prefer slightly lighter evenings.

EdithStourton · 08/03/2025 18:38

NOPE!
I'm always delighted by the lighter evenings, the birds singing, the flowers coming into bloom, the trees coming into leaf.

February does my head in.
