Does anyone else feel secretly sad when winter ends?! 🤭

I realise I'm probably in an extreme minority! But, I absolutely love both autumn and winter. I love spring too; and the early spring weather today is glorious. But, I can't help but feel slightly melancholic when winter ends. The way many people do when summer ends. Does anyone else relate to this?

No. I hate winter. I love this time of year when the flowers come up, the air feels warm, the skies are blue and the birds start singing. There is nothing nice at all about autumn and winter.

Zippidydoodah · 08/03/2025 15:58

Absolutely not!! I feel the opposite. Sense of dread when the winter is approaching (and even Christmas, to be honest). Spring gives me energy.

WinterCosiness · 08/03/2025 16:07

So interesting reading all the responses. Even those who completely disagree! Which is fine of course. I'm fully aware that most people rejoice in summer and lament winter. I know I'm in a minority. But, seems there are a fair few of us autumn/winter lovers on here too - a snowy sisterhood!

No. I'm the opposite. I love spring so much.

Ididntsaybanana · 08/03/2025 16:10

I used to hate summer. I just felt so exposed, from wearing less/lighter clothing to spending more time outside.
I don't know what's changed in the last few years, other than we've now got a garden i can hide in, but I don't find it so bad.
Autumn and the first couple of months of winter is still the best time though.

DinoLil · 08/03/2025 16:24

Yes.

I'm already sinking into a dark pit of misery because I love the cosiness and warmth of winter. The curtains closed at 4pm. Candles lit.

I hate, hate the onset of spring. I'm so anxious already. The pressure, the expectations, the 'oooh what a lovely day, let's have a walk/picnic/enjoy a pub garden meal'.

Not for me, thanks. Bring back winter, please.

DinoLil · 08/03/2025 16:26

Oh. Now I'm finished! Just posted and what have I heard?? A flipping ice cream van jingling down the road! Seriously! You couldn't make it up.

Horses7 · 08/03/2025 16:36

I love every season especially summer but I do find Spring a little difficult - looks really sunny but still cold. However I too love winter, early darkness, fire going, comfy onesies, hot chocolate, candles, gripping film or series on tv.
After a few months of winter though I’m ready for summer, spring does get in the way but lambs, bluebells, daffodils, pastel clothes make up for it.

toffeeappleturnip · 08/03/2025 16:41

I don't like light evenings.
I like the plants starting to grow but I wish the evenings still went dark at 5pm.
I hate when it's light for so long and you feel like you should be doing something.

Winter gives me an excuse to stay in and just potter then get under a blanket at 5 to rest for the evening.
I just feel too lazy to do that when it's still sunny outside 😄

Madre123 · 08/03/2025 16:43

I don't like the summer...longer days blah blah blah....I much prefer the shorter darker days. No need to make excuses not to go out...dreading the summer months.

Aww, I feel your pain! If it helps, there are lots of lovely winter ambience videos on YouTube? I remember that crazy hot summer in 2022, when it went up to nearly 40°C. I had Covid at the time too, and it was all so horrendous. I found the heavy rain videos on YouTube surprisingly helpful!

Yes, I enjoy autumn and winter more. I don't like spring and I hate the month of July! But we are all different and it'll keep coming round whether I like it or not.

Like others I like the darker evenings too

TheMorels · 08/03/2025 16:51

I’m the type that feels a small thrill at signs of the beginning of each season, rather than the end. I find something to love in them all. But there’s something really special about the first signs of spring.

Today, my husband put out the cushions on the outdoor sofas and we had our lunch on the patio for the first time since September. All the while watching the birds dart in and out of the nesting boxes, seeing red kites swoop across the sky and admiring the snowdrops, crocuses and narcissi dotted across the garden. It was bliss.

Abracadabra12345 · 08/03/2025 17:01

@WinterCosiness
I think mine is the same order of preference - autumn, winter, spring, summer. Though autumn and winter possibly joint first. Summer is unquestionably my least favourite! I actually dread it!

Are you me?!

I loathed lockdown and everyone outside but that's because I felt hemmed in (our gardens are long and narrow and therefore close to everyone). I suffered and I mean suffered: I felt desperate to escape and breathe solitude and peace.

When British Summertime ended I felt joy, and when it began to get dark early, I'd go outside and sing (quietly!) "Hello darkness my old friend....". I feel so happy and at peace in autumn and winter. Maybe if I lived in rural solitude I'd feel differently about the seasons, I don't know

I loved walking outside and seeing the frost and ice and starry sky. Nothing beats it for me

WinterCosiness · 08/03/2025 17:03

So... About another 3 months before summer rears its head to taunt me! So, at least there's that. Also, only 6 months or so till September when I can bid summer goodbye for another year. So, it's not so bad!

No I don't! I am so glad when winter is over. It is something to be endured. My life begins again on 1st March.

Snuggling up with a book under a blanket. Wrapping up for a wintery walk, and returning to a bowl of homemade soup and fresh warm crusty bread followed by a hot bath and a cup of tea. Unashamedly early nights. Lovely cosy clothes in beautiful rich colours. Hot chocolate, hot chocolate, hot chocolate... An excuse to devour a box set. Low winter sun. No naked people anywhere! Happy dogs, who do not like hot weather. There's so much to love about winter! In my very humble opinion 😄

For me it's loneliness, cabin fever, depression, fat food that make me feel worse, hopelessness, no flowers, mud and muck everywhere, kids going mental inside. I hate having to wear many layers (sweat like a pig underneath, pain in the arse to take off/put on, takes a huge amount of space in the entrance, kids hate getting dressed/undressed so it's always absolute meltdowns multiple times a day for this alone). I sound like a miserable git, but I cannot wait for winter to finish. Comes March and I'm at my worst after so many months (feels like years now) of this 🤣

Whatevernext1 · 08/03/2025 17:06

I absolutely love winter!
I've been so miserable this week as the sun has been out. I miss the dark nights already.
I can't stand summer,it really gets me down and longing for those cold winter nights! I'm always hot anyway but summer just makes it so much worse.
Everyone is always so happy but I just feel like I moan all through summer!
Hate the lack of sleep due to being too hot, hate how late it stays light.
I already can't wait for autumn to be on the way as I can start to feel happy knowing that winter is coming.
It's also so much easier to dress for winter.

Abracadabra12345 · 08/03/2025 17:06

But here in the SE there's no guarantee that spring won't be summer come early, and September is often warm

A fellow introvert? I think it's the solitude and peace that is key. I do wonder if winter people are more likely to be introverts? But, there are probably so many factors...

No, I'm done with winter now. Time for spring. The sun was out earlier and the air felt warm and there were bunches of daffodils all along the grass verges. Such a treat.

That's true! The seasons have been changing with climate change. I'd love to live somewhere with a dedicated winter, like Norway perhaps!

I've just spent the most glorious afternoon on my allotment.
In the summer I'm down there until the light fades.
Whilst I thoroughly recommend allotments, it can be an expensive hobby. And it's often very hard work. I've just spent 4 hours dismantling an old rusty polytunnel and building a new one. I had my son to help - both of us tired but happy we have achieved something today

Mushmemellow · 08/03/2025 17:11

I love autumn and winter and even like the beginning of spring but once it starts creeping into summer then I’m out! I’ve always been like this from a young girl.

Gosh no...I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I can live again!

That’s exactly how I feel when Autumn arrives! 😆
