Does anyone else feel secretly sad when winter ends?! 🤭

I realise I'm probably in an extreme minority! But, I absolutely love both autumn and winter. I love spring too; and the early spring weather today is glorious. But, I can't help but feel slightly melancholic when winter ends. The way many people do when summer ends. Does anyone else relate to this?

I feel like I’m always ready for the next season and find the predictable changes quite comforting, so I’m happy with anything. I wouldn’t want to move somewhere with no seasons at all ( eg Singapore).

Ilovemyshed · 09/03/2025 07:51

Yes, for a few reasons:

Winter is a cosy, go to bed early, snuggly sort of time
Christmas break!
I can wear big jumpers and not worry about my weight
Lots of excuses to linger in the bath and snug on the sofa with a cat or two
Dust and dirty windows don't show up so much
No gardening to so - in the summer I am over run with lots to do there, which I love but it kills time
No flies in the house ( we live in the country)
Its harder to see those pesky hairs that appear on neck and chin!

But I do love Spring too and the garden budding up and blossoming.

WinterCosiness · 09/03/2025 08:00

I went for a walk very early this morning. I knew that with the sunny forecast today, it'll get busy out there soon. I wanted time alone with nature. So, I do think that's a massive factor of it for me. Autumn and winter are just more quiet for the most part - apart from Christmas shopping chaos, though I do most of that online these days...

I suspect I am in the minority of summer lovers on this thread because it very rarely gets too hot to be comfortable where I live.

Just spotted my error.

It rarely gets too hot to be UNCOMFORTABLE where I live.

I think it was 2022 when we last hit 30 degrees. The last two summers have been miserable with a lot of rain.

ZenNudist · 09/03/2025 08:11

I like spring and I suppose winter is my least favourite season but I think I'm resistant to change so with the passing of the season I feel regret. Its mainly clothes based as I prefer my winter wardrobe. I also get addicted to cuddling up under the duvet with a hot water bottle and I'm having to relinquish that habit.

Chucklesisters · 09/03/2025 08:20

An unusually warm spring and summer is usually very difficult for me (and only me - I realise I’m being an exceptional moaner!) as it reminds me that I have zero friends and family to socialise with in the outdoors! It’s a me problem, I know, just offering a different perspective.

(I have a progressive disability that affects my speech so have not made friends after moving to my current city, in case anyone was about to ask. Family has emigrated or died off).

Sockmate123 · 09/03/2025 08:21

I love in Winter that its quieter with neighbours. Neighbours one side in particular are very loud, dont hear them in Winter but in Summer with windows open I hear them alot and their barking chihuahua 🙄
I do love seeing the Sun aside from that though and being able to go on days out etc

RampantIvy · 09/03/2025 08:23

Fortunately we have quiet neighbours. Most of the people in our road are retired, so the only noise we hear is a lawn mower or occasionally a patio being power washed.

Sheknowsaboutme · 09/03/2025 08:26

Absolutely! I love winter.

but im liking lighter mornings and i have thousands of daffodils blooming, our lambs being born and the warm spring sunshine

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/03/2025 08:52

I’m really enjoying signs of spring, and a recent run of lovely, warmer sunny days, but must admit I do quite like days when it’s cold, wet, grey and miserable, so I don’t feel I ought to be out of doors doing something ‘healthy’.

Comedycook · 08/03/2025 14:43

Gosh no...I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I can live again!

Me too! Mentally because I have SAD but also physically because I have autism and can’t stand winter clothes! I just want to swan around in shorts and a T-shirt or even a hoodie if it’s not that warm and crocs (with socks and I’m not even sorry) 😂.

I was driving DH mad yesterday by exclaiming “OMG I list love the sunshine” every 5 minutes.

garlictwist · 09/03/2025 09:00

I much prefer summer to winter weather-wise but I don't like the endless daylight we get in summer. I much prefer it to get dark around tea-time and to close the curtains. If it's light outside I feel this guilt that I am just sitting inside but actually that's what I want to do!

the80sweregreat · 09/03/2025 09:49

Where did this come from that people have to be outside?
I remember as a child my dad tending his small garden in the summer months and then sitting outside , which seems to be the norm amongst so many people I know but I find it boring even if you have a book to read or whatever. You are hounded by flies or wasps if you have food outside not to mention having to put on sun screen or find some shade if it gets too hot.
I know people love it, but I can't see the appeal (unless I'm on holiday in the shade!)
I can't just sit about too much though. I am bored too easily to sit around outside.

I think summer brings a social pressure that winter doesn't. I like the hideaway nature of winter!

Agree totally with you. I feel I can't totally relax. When the weather is warm I feel pressure to be doing something. I'm the only one to do the gardening so pressure of keeping up with that too.

the80sweregreat · 09/03/2025 10:04

We did go outside when I had young children ( to the park or something like that ) but it's great now I can choose if I want to go outside or have a day out if it's warm! I guess that it's a bit ingrained that children need fresh air or some exercise or just a change of routine.

JFDIYOLO · 09/03/2025 10:06

@Bryonyberries Ive loved pottering in the garden and giving the lawn its first cut for 2025 today. It looks lovely and neat and green now and all my bulbs are flowering and I’m finding the first signs of my plants starting to shoot again. I’ve always been an autumn person but I’ve started to appreciate spring more in the last few years.

Absolutely!!! Me too, I wonder if it is because as I get older I appreciate new life, new growth more than when I was younger and admiring the autumn tints? Maybe a sense of mortality creeping in. U love seeing the still leaf-bare winter branches starting to pop with pink white and yellow flower buds, the roses putting out the new shoots, the bulbs green growth going up and up. First daffodils are always a thing and buying bunches early for the house is one of my must dos in February.

calicocloud · 09/03/2025 10:09

I usually feel uplifted and energised on the first sunny spring day but I can't seem to muster any enthusiasm this year.
I like all seasons for what they are, but I admit my favourite is autumn, then winter. My child has SEND and autism. He is developmentally a few years below his chronological age. I admit that seeing other kids outside playing on the park without adult supervision can be difficult as I know he is missing out on that. In the colder, darker months kids are usually inside and I don't feel so sad and worried.
The best thing about spring is daffodils, I love them.

Luminousnose · 09/03/2025 10:18

Nope. I quite like autumn and winter, when the nights start to draw in and we can light the wood burner, but by February I’ve had enough - HATE getting up in the dark (and yes I did mean to shout). Late Spring is my favourite time of year by a country mile. Bluebell filled woods in April and May, and early June, when the leaves are just so fresh and vibrant that it almost hurts the eyes - makes my heart sing! Not so keen on high summer though.

highstoolfling · 09/03/2025 10:22

Oh me me me! I love winter. Summer feels like two days in one. The housework never ends. Kids go to bed later and everything's feels more disorganised for me. I'm on a FB group called I hate Summer. I'm also a redhead with translucent skin so that doesn't help. I like boots and jumpers. Summer clothes means trying to do fake tan Envy

the80sweregreat · 09/03/2025 10:24

I do hate it too hot , but I feel in the minority as most people love it boiling.
I just don't seem comfortable or happy in heat whilst others are like lizards soaking it all up

I feel for you as a redhead. I'm a pale Celtic woman, and simply not designed for hot weather either!

I'm more arctic hare than lizard!

Oh God no I'm glad to see the back end of it. It's dark, cold and depressing. I'm loving springtime and the nights pulling out. It feels like freedom, like being released from prison.

Funny how we see it so differently. I find summer stifling. To me, that's the prison! Autumn is freedom for me! But, all just personal preference 🤷‍♀️
