Does anyone else feel secretly sad when winter ends?! 🤭

I realise I'm probably in an extreme minority! But, I absolutely love both autumn and winter. I love spring too; and the early spring weather today is glorious. But, I can't help but feel slightly melancholic when winter ends. The way many people do when summer ends. Does anyone else relate to this?

I’m relieved, and love spring.

EscapeTheCastle · 08/03/2025 18:40

I'm ok with all the seasons and see the advantages in all weathers but I hate heatwaves. If I were a rich woman I would fly to Ireland or Norway every time there was a heatwave and stay there until it was over.
I also find change and transitions difficult. So I'll be anxious about changing my winter go to coat to something lighter or the other way round.

WinterCosiness · 08/03/2025 18:45

A former work colleague had the surname De Winter. I always thought it was the best surname I'd ever heard of...

Yes, I'd disappear to the furthest poles in a heatwave if I could afford it!

I can find something to enjoy (and indeed not enjoy) in all the seasons.

However, I do slightly struggle with the almost guilty feeling that we now HAVE to be out 'making the most' of the better weather. I think it stems from childhood when good weather = outside, and DM would have been cross to find us inside on a nice day.

In Winter it feels more permissible to either wrap up and embrace the cold, or say 'nah, can't be arsed today'.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 08/03/2025 19:11

I LOVE heatwaves, albeit it's uncomfortable past 30 degrees. Around 28 is perfect. I'm desperate for a good summer, lots of hot sunny days.

Kellyjelly33 · 08/03/2025 19:15

I love cool air. Late autumn, winter and very early spring are my favourite times of the year.
Roll on November... 😁

terracelane23 · 08/03/2025 19:16

No. I'm a gardener so work outside. Winter is brutal.

CalicoPusscat · 08/03/2025 19:30

@Catinabox21 what, already?? I'm not quite warm enough yet!

DinoLil · 08/03/2025 19:33

@WinterCosiness Thank you!
I'm off to check that out.

Dreading the clocks changing.
And who thinks an ice cream van is a good idea in March ffs??

Middlemarch123 · 08/03/2025 19:50

All the seasons have their good points and bad points.
I have fibromyalgia, so it’s worse in the winter, as cold exacerbates it. But there is something very comforting about wrapping up warm under a heated blanket in winter. I think you can always get warm, but intense heat in the summer is awful, I hate trying to sleep with a fan regurgitating hot air, loudly whirring around. Getting out of a cool shower, then feeling hot and sweaty again five minutes later.

My perfect day would be 16 degrees out, bright sunshine from 6.00 a.m. until 9.00 p.m. then light rain all night. A gentle breeze. Basically a nice April day, all year round! I don’t like extreme cold or heat. I love the colours of Autumn.

stargirl1701 · 08/03/2025 20:15

No. I moved to living and eating as seasonally as possible so I'm always looking forward to the next season!

What is so awful about being outside?

Dreading the clocks changing.

I can't wait for the lighter evenings.

DirtyBird · 08/03/2025 20:43

Yes, I love how clean the air smells on a crisp autumn or winter day. Autumn is my fav time of the year and I love short days of sunlight so I can get in bed early and curl up with a hot drink. I’m dreading the summer, haven’t really liked it since I was a kid- it’s way too hot and miserable.

RampantIvy · 08/03/2025 20:48

I would love to live where all these mumsnetters live who have long hot summers.

Mingenious · 08/03/2025 20:49

Absolutely not! I love all the seasons and enjoy winter but today has been absolutly glorious! I’ve been outside in a T-shirt all
day! No more wet muddy waterproofs, no more smelly wet dog! Bring on the spring proper!

This weather reminds me of 2020 which was the best summer I can remember. I hope this year plays out the same way..,preferably without the global pandemic and bashing of saucepans.

MotherofPearl · 08/03/2025 20:51

I'm totally with you OP. I find autumn and winter very peaceful and calm somehow. Spring is lovely, but I dread summer. Everything feels too loud and bright! I don't like it staying late until 10pm at all. I love the feeling of hibernation in winter.

Catinabox21 · 08/03/2025 22:32

@RampantIvy nothing wrong at all with being outside. In fact I need to get outdoors every day, rain or shine. My point is just that in good weather, I feel this odd pressure to be 'making the most' of it. The problem is very much me, not the weather!

flyinghen · 09/03/2025 00:06

I dread summer too, sticky, too hot, flies everywhere, wasps, other insects, having to slaver your kids in sun cream whilst they throw themselves around the room on repeat. My own eyes stinging from the suncream, I hate summer clothes. I hate being unable to sleep due to heat and waking up insanely sweaty. I just honestly hate it, I'm sure we sound miserable to most but I completely agree. My favourite season is Autumn, I like winter and spring is nice as long as it doesn't get too warm. I love cosy!

Perhaps if I tanned beautifully like my husband and could handle temps above 22 and wasn't terrified of wasps maybe I'd love summer too.

mellongoose · 09/03/2025 07:28

This thread is so interesting and people are so different!

I feel lucky that I love and can embrace all the seasons and the changes. I'm ready for the seasons to change when they do and I actively look forward to the new one.

mellongoose · 09/03/2025 07:29

I should add that I live rurally and can't wait for the mud to dry out!

RampantIvy · 09/03/2025 07:29

I suspect I am in the minority of summer lovers on this thread because it very rarely gets too hot to be comfortable where I live.

Glitchymn1 · 09/03/2025 07:32

Me. I love autumn and winter. Wish we had snow, crisp sunny days. Not a rain and wind fan! Love my candles, the fire, my lovely heated throws.

In summer I’m up earlier, bed later and have the garden to contend with. Often don’t sit down until 9pm. I’m not going crazy with the plants this year though. I don’t think I’m going to buy more, this summer will be a jet wash, patio furniture out, then just lawn mowing!

mogtheexcellent · 09/03/2025 07:34

I love the winter. We have the fire which I love to watch and its dark when I walk the dog in the evening so shes not barking at joggers and chasing kids on bikes. I hate the heat, I hate that even fancy suntan lotion makes me spotty.

AND - most importantly - I hate having to wear a bra.
