Does anyone else feel secretly sad when winter ends?! 🤭

I realise I'm probably in an extreme minority! But, I absolutely love both autumn and winter. I love spring too; and the early spring weather today is glorious. But, I can't help but feel slightly melancholic when winter ends. The way many people do when summer ends. Does anyone else relate to this?

I love winter, it's so cosy and relaxed but usually about this time I look forward to spring and getting out and about. Autum is amazing too. The only bit I dislike is the really boiling weather. It's too much for me.

July and August are the worst months for me, I hate being hot and sweaty, I never feel fresh, the heat makes me grumpy, and a few years back in a fit of pique I bought an air conditioning unit. That is the only thing that stops me collapsing into a sweaty sobbing heap.

Autumn and winter are my favourite seasons, I adore the mellowness, the quiet, slow pace, almost like hibernation, then Spring comes and I know that very soon it'll be "oooh nice day for a barbecue" 🙄 I don't like barbecues...

DilemmaDelilah · 09/03/2025 18:07

Definitely not! I saw young hawthorn leaves sprouting on the trees along our road this morning and that made me feel so happy!

Sweetappley · 09/03/2025 18:07

There’s something about ‘nice day for a bbq’ …

I'm totally with you OP. I find autumn and winter very peaceful and calm somehow. Spring is lovely, but I dread summer. Everything feels too loud and bright! I don't like it staying late until 10pm at all. I love the feeling of hibernation in winter.

You've put into words exactly how I feel

I love in Winter that its quieter with neighbours. Neighbours one side in particular are very loud, dont hear them in Winter but in Summer with windows open I hear them alot and their barking chihuahua 🙄
I do love seeing the Sun aside from that though and being able to go on days out etc

Yes. You can forget your neighbours in autumn and winter and then - come warm weather they appear! All our neighbours are lovely apart from one two narrow gardens along - it's so peaceful when he's not around

@ZenNudist I also get addicted to cuddling up under the duvet with a hot water bottle and I'm having to relinquish that habit

Oh yes, isn't that the best? And a lingering hot bath to warm up...

Nope. I quite like autumn and winter, when the nights start to draw in and we can light the wood burner, but by February I’ve had enough - HATE getting up in the dark (and yes I did mean to shout). Late Spring is my favourite time of year by a country mile. Bluebell filled woods in April and May, and early June, when the leaves are just so fresh and vibrant that it almost hurts the eyes - makes my heart sing! Not so keen on high summer though.

Actually you've made me like even June now. Beautifully lyrical!

OP thank you for coming back so often and engaging - a refreshing change for many threads!

You would think that we had relentlessly hot summers from some of the posts on here.

We don't.

2018 and 2022 did have a lot of hot and sunny weather. We did have a short very hot spell in 2019. We had a lovely spring in 2020 and a fairly decent summer. 2023 and 2024 were dismal with the odd warm day.

Not on the south coast they weren't. We had plenty of nice weather the last 2 years and nearly a week last year that was 28/29 every day and too much for me.

I'm on the beach now and it says its about 11 but in the sun feels more like 20. It's lovely for now but I'm already uncomfortable about how hot it might get this year if it's this warm already.

RampantIvy · 10/03/2025 10:21

I need tomove to the South coast.
I'm about 250 miles further north.

ClarabelleRose · 10/03/2025 10:23

No. I honestly feel a huge sense of relief that I’ve got through it.

namechangeforthecringe · 10/03/2025 10:23

I much prefer winter. I like my summer outfits and the sunshine but I just like winter so much better. Love it being darker and colder and I feel like there's less danger. So many drunk idiots the second the sun comes out so give me winter any day!

DoAWheelie · 10/03/2025 10:27

I hate the summer. I don't tolerate heat well, anything over 25c makes me feel lightheaded and a bit sick. Sweating causes me intense itching and makes me want to rip my skin off (I have sensory issues). I can't afford any kind of air conditioning and a fan doesn't really help.

It being so light so late makes me feel really exposed too. I'm much more comfortable in the dark and way more productive. I basically turn into a hermit all summer never going out. I love winter evenings out though.

I'm much more productive in winter too, and way more creative. I realise for some people it'd be the exact opposite!

Yes, absolutely. There's nothing I enjoy about the Summer

My ideal milieu is a crisp October afternoon followed by misty evening.

RampantIvy · 10/03/2025 14:52

I feel sad today because the glorious weather we had last week has disappeared. It is a cold (9 deg) cloudy day.

StillCreatingAName · 10/03/2025 15:00

There’s usually a day in September, a date early in the month, some years late Sept, when there’s a really slight change in the air. You can feel it, especially if you’re waiting for it. It’s the best day of (late) summer for me, it means Autumn is here and my heart skips a beat…

Yes it does. I guess that the summer haters all live in London or the South of England.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/03/2025 17:31

Spring and autumn are the most interesting with the changes in nature. I find spring progressive and autumn regressive.
We've had too many disappointing summers in recent years, but I like daylight, and warmth.

While I was partway through reading this thread, I had a text from DS saying he was feeling faint while walking home from the bus stop. I slid on some sandals and was able to jog out to him. A few weeks ago it would have been wasting a few minutes pissing around with socks, trainers and coats, then ending up having to dry out mud-caked trainers afterwards.

Winter is faffy and hard work, I hate getting ready then getting sweaty in my layers while the DCs are finishing off.
And no amount of layering warms my nose up to stop it from dripping. I'd rather be consistently warm all over. Winter is expensive in heating, (little energy input from solar power too)

We haven't had a decent snowfall in years, and beautiful sparkling hoare frosts are rare. Winter is normally a cool, gloomy, mud-fest that drags on for far too long. There's already an abundance of dull and wet weather through the rest of the year and let alone a season filled with it 95% of the time.

Topsy44 · 10/03/2025 17:40

I used to love Summer but now in my fifties I struggle in any heat and yes am in SE. I also don’t like the pressure to be constantly out and doing things even if that pressure comes from inside my head!

RampantIvy · 10/03/2025 18:01

I agree @BogRollBOGOF. The "just put on another jumper" brigade just don't get it. We have had a lot of frosts this winter and significant snowfall in January followed by sub zero temperatures for a week, so it just didn't melt. Our bin collections still haven't caught up.

It was much colder in Yorkshire today, and definitely not sandal weather.
