What is this virus that's going around

DH has been bed ridden since NYD with aches pains and generally feeling very unwell. One min he's hot then cold with an intermittent headache. He's been wiped out, worst I've ever seen him in 25 yrs.

What is it? Anyone else had this?

Covid? Flu?

Nerdlings · 03/01/2025 17:25

It sounds like flu. We have all had it too. People don't realise how poorly flu can make you feel until they have had it

clinkclankclop · 03/01/2025 17:26

I was thinking the flu. He really is miserable and normally he just gets on with things without too much moaning. Hopefully he seens a turning point soon

Seems to be. I feel sorry for him.

Our local hospitals trust have put out Facebook alerts stating ‘respiratory infections’ so Flu, Covid, RSV. I’m also wiped out since NYE . DH is so ill (he’s clinically vulnerable) he’s developed pneumonia (he is prone to it due to adrenal deficiency amongst other things). He’s got the meds now so fingers crossed 🤞 he will start to improve quickly. We’ve both had flu and Covid vaccines this winter so I assumed it was RSV for us but could be one of the others - dread to think how bad it would have been without vaccines if so.

gamerchick · 03/01/2025 17:34

There's 4 nasty viruses going about. The flu one is particularly active. I think the vaccine isn't very effective this year. Whether it's because they picked the wrong strains or not.

Poor thing, hope he's on the mend soon

clinkclankclop · 03/01/2025 17:36

The only saving grace, if you can say that is that he's still off work. He has a very high stress job so it's difficult for him to take time off without being needed by someone so at least most clients are still off until Monday so fingers crossed he sees improvement soon

My adult dd has it and is so unwell. Testing negative for COVID and has had the flu jab and is the most ill I've ever seen her. Really hope everyone is better soon 💐

I've got it. Came on Sunday evening and only now I'm starting to feel better. I'm still sleeping a lot and feel wiped out though.

Mandoidi · 03/01/2025 18:08

I feel terrible, and I think it's the flu.came on very rapidly on New year's eve, felt a bit short of breath about 4pm, really sore throat by 8 and then shakes by 10.
Have had a fever since then, sometimes topping 40°C when my paracetamol starts to wear off.
Bed ridden, couldn't speak, moving prompts very painful coughing fit, hot/cold/hot/cold, no appetite, muscle pain and now my nose is blocked and my sinuses are painful.
Getting fed up of it now- solidarity to anyone else tha has it.

I had it early December and then spread to the rest of the house. Worse I've ever felt. In bed and off work as couldn't work. Just so monumentally tired all the time, zero appetite and a dreadful cough that would not go. It took 2 weeks to feel fully human again. The youngest escaped it in the main as they'd had their flu vax at school earlier in the autumn - but still got a mild version. Eldest hadn't had their vax until they went back to school mid December by which point the horse had most definitely bolted and they'd had almost a week of school. My only advice is rest and rest some more. Stay home and don't spread it in the office. Lots of fluids.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 03/01/2025 18:18

I've been in bed since Christmas Eve. Feel like shit. Now it's the fatigue. No idea what it is but it's not very nice.

Oneearringlost · 03/01/2025 18:19

DH is a respiratory consultant. He's never seen as much flu as this year ( he's been qualified since 1991).
There was a fair bit of covid and RSV but flu as waay overtaken these.
Apparently only 37% of all eligible people have taken up the flu jab.

Theimpossiblegirl · 03/01/2025 18:21

My adult DD has it. She's never ill but it's wiped her out. Luckily she's not in work until Monday but it's a nasty bug.

RunningJo · 03/01/2025 18:27

Yep, I have it. Horrible body aches, chesty cough, no energy, headache, even my skin hurts & also have a dodgy stomach as well. Whatever it is, it’s horrible 😕

Latenightreader · 03/01/2025 18:27

My daughter missed the last week and a bit of term because she was really unwell, confirmed as flu after the Dr sent us to A&E because she had a painful neck and very high temp. My mother came down with it a few days later, by which time I'd bought swab tests online (a new thing apparently) so confirmed it for her. Amazingly I have avoided it thus far. At one point 9 teachers and almost a quarter of pupils at my daughter's primary school were absent - it's rife at the moment.

Mydogisamassivetwat · 03/01/2025 18:28

I had flu 25 years ago when I was 19. It wiped me out for two weeks.

It was worse than the pneumonia I had 5 years ago. I could still function with that but not with flu.

mumofthemonsters808 · 03/01/2025 18:30

Yes it’s awful, a really nasty bug, I was in bed 4 days solid.I ached from head to toe, ears sore, even my mouth hurt.Constant coughing, sneezing, boiling hot then freezing cold.I rung in sick which went down like a lead balloon I did not even have the energy to listen to my Boss telling me how busy it was, I just hung up and went back to sleep. Finally feeling a lot better, but no energy or appetite.

Mandoidi · 03/01/2025 18:35

OMG my nostril just cleared! I've been lying here with a vicks inhaler shoved up it for the last hour and it just went 'pop' and now I can breathe again!

I'm ecstatic!
