Give me one underrated band/singer/ group

Do you listen to someone and can’t understand how they aren’t megastars??

I mean I get why megastars happen, they usually have mass popular appeal.

Give me your great overlooked musicians/ groups/ bands.

I’ll start: My Brightest Diamond. Not cool, not poppy but just so skilled, well-arranged and melodic.

Nick Drake. Sadly passed

AsanteSana · 25/11/2024 23:33

Queen Ifrica - fantastic Jamaican reggae artist not as widely known as she should be

Lilifer · 25/11/2024 23:36

Jason Isbell

Nothing but Thieves. Excellent band but very underrated.

Totally agree!
We have been listening to them since 2019 and have seen them live several times.
Conor Mason has the most beautiful, classically trained voice that always gives me goosepimples.

Also under-rated and only recently discovered by us when watching Glasto on TV in 2023 are a group called Young Fathers. A Scottish band who have been around since 2008. We saw them twice last year - not easy to pin down their genre, but their sound is incredible!

First Aid Kit

Public Service Broadcasting - absolutely epically good band and excellent stage names.

Yeah I like PSB too. Whole family does, good interesting music.

Yes yes to the Tragically Hip and Michael Kiwanuka! Want to add Glen Hansard to that too, would love to see him live. Also Stornaway and Johnny Flynn.

Glen Hansard is fabulous! We have seen him 3 times...the latest time at Union Chapel in Islington in April. He was joined by Kelly Jones from Stereophonics and they did 'Maybe tomorrow' together. Lots of goosepimples!

Johnny Flynn is superb.

A talented actor and musician

Been listening. She is pretty damn good. Thanks for that tip.

I love Kelly. He was inspired by the Tragically Hip before Stereophonics formed. His latest venture Far From Saints is incredible, they’ve had a bit of airplay and topped the Country album charts

I must confess that I had never heard of Kelly Jones and had only just about heard of Stereophonics (they were big during the period when I had my babies and was not really into music at that time).
Kelly was fantastic though (and beautiful!), so I have since got all Stereophonics albums and now love them!

Michael Kiwanuka.

Cold Little Heart ( Big Little Lies) is my favourite song ever, something so atmospheric about it.

He was fabulous live.

Going to see him this week - can't wait! His voice is sublime.

I'm always amazed when people haven't heard of him, he's had a number one album. Best live artist ever.
A couple of West country artists - Gaz Brookfield & Nick Parker. Both excellent.

Agreed re Frank Turner live. I've seen him more than anyone else. Amazing how one man and an acoustic guitar can hold a crowd. Love him best with the Sleeping Souls though.

acatcalledjohn · 26/11/2024 00:20

I wholly agree with The Pierces, Michael Kiwanuka & Nothing But Thieves.

Adding Agnes Obel and Young Gun Silver Fox.

Thought whilst I believe they deserve more recognition, seeing these bands/artists in smaller venues is always such a treat. There is an intimacy which gets lost once the venues get too big.

BucketBouquet · 26/11/2024 00:22

Taylor Dayne. Huge in the US for a couple of years, but then became superseded by the likes of Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson etc… never understood how someone with such a fantastic voice didn’t maintain that level of stardom.

Julia Fordham. Could have been the next Annie Lennox, but has somehow stayed niche.

Terry Hall. Obviously had some hugely successful moments with The Specials and the Fun Boy Three, but he was an amazing songwriter who I think should have had a long career at the top, whereas he was ignored or a “Whatever happened to…?” in later years.

Oh yes! She’s amazing! (Or they, I should say now.)

Eddie Reader and Karen Matheson.

Anais Mitchell as a solo artists/singer-songwriter...

but also more recently the 3 albums as the band Bonny Light Horseman.

Superchunk. Been obsessed with them for over 10 years and I have never met anyone that's heard of them apart from my own family😂

Quite heartened to see so many of my favourite artists mentioned in this thread.

Great to see Bellowhead mentioned. My favourite live band.
