Give me one underrated band/singer/ group

Do you listen to someone and can’t understand how they aren’t megastars??

I mean I get why megastars happen, they usually have mass popular appeal.

Give me your great overlooked musicians/ groups/ bands.

I’ll start: My Brightest Diamond. Not cool, not poppy but just so skilled, well-arranged and melodic.

Esmee Denters. So much more talented than Taylor Swift. I like some of her covers on YouTube.

Frank Turner

I'm always amazed when people haven't heard of him, he's had a number one album. Best live artist ever.
A couple of West country artists - Gaz Brookfield & Nick Parker. Both excellent.

ThePoshUns · 25/11/2024 19:44

I wouldn't say Paolo Nutini is underrated, he's pretty popular.
I'm going to say Newton Faulkner, so talented and always great live.
Marina and the Diamonds.
Reed - also excellent live.

RainBow725 · 25/11/2024 19:44

Total agree with Jack Savoretti and Paolo Nutini. See also Rumer. Amazing voice but never quite 'made it'

Classified!

Duffy disappeared, didn't she? I remember some story that she'd been kidnapped and sexually assaulted and thus gave up the music industry but I don't know.

She was sort of Adele before there was Adele and Amy Winehouse after Amy Winehouse but not as troubled. Until she was abducted and raped, of course. This is her wikipedia but it doesn't really explain things very well.

Otherwise, The Dead South. Sort of bluegrass but from Saskatchewan, Canada. Here's the best known tune:

Michael Kiwanuka.

Cold Little Heart ( Big Little Lies) is my favourite song ever, something so atmospheric about it.

He was fabulous live.

Callum Beattie, Scottish singer songwriter ,
Has been around for a while, only just starting to get the recognition he deserves
A really nice talented young man

Absolutely agree!

Oh yea I adore that song

Floralnomad · 25/11/2024 19:55

Rob.Green who is a Nottingham based singer and is fantastic
Lee Forsyth Griffiths who is one of the few singers who sound better live than on record .

She had a horrendous experience and it all came out in 2020. Poor woman because she should have had a longer career than two albums. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-52177265

She speaks in your article if being fearful and wanting to become a recluse when she was famous. We hear similar things from Chappell Roan, so the fame industry is not good for women.

Duffy

Duffy: Singer was ‘drugged for four weeks, raped and taken abroad’

The singer says she was drugged and held for four weeks, and feared for her life.

Also The Shires, who are a British country act and they should be enormous.

And The Pierces who I saw at Radio 2 Live 13 years ago. They should have been BIG.

My favourite track:

Fireworknight · 25/11/2024 20:08

Also love Jack Savoretti, who I first saw on Aled Jones ‘Weekend’ programme many moons ago. Also love Rumer as mentioned above.

Alyssa Bonagaru - saw her supporting The Shires and felt she should be bigger

The Dead South - have a loyal following but not more widely known

Kim Churchill - saw him at Cambridge folk festival years ago and been following him since, Australian acoustic singer

(I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s going to check these artists out)

What in the actual hell went on there? It hasn't really all come out has it? I mean, who did it?

I apologise for not being very eloquent or knowing the right language to speak about this sensitively and she doesn’t owe anybody a complete explanation but how horrific yet completely strange.

I mean, there’s a degree of organisation involved. It couldn't just be a deranged fan?

Ladamesansmerci · 25/11/2024 20:14

Crawlers.

Fantastic Northern up and coming band.

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 25/11/2024 20:14

Tusse. His song Rain gives me goosebumps.

Fireworknight · 25/11/2024 20:15

@MyrtleStrumpet we have similar tastes. Was also thinking of The Pierces, but they do solo stuff nowadays, rather than a group.

Wildwood Kin were another band who seemed to be gaining popularity and recognition. Saw them a few times. The band consisted of two sisters and a cousin, but the cousin left in 2022 and they don’t seemed to have done much since.

She didn't officially complain to the police, though she has spoken to them about it informally. It must have been horrible and she was in a restaurant then drugged, then taken to another country. She must have been terrified and may have retreated as a result.

manifestthis · 25/11/2024 20:16

Nothing but Thieves. Excellent band but very underrated.

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 25/11/2024 20:18

Check out turn to gold

I saw that they were doing solo projects but I love the tone of their two voices together. It didn't feel that either of them dominated and family voices always blend beautifully.

I will check out Wildwood Kin.

I love beautiful harmonies and complicated melodies which is why I love folkstyle and some country. Suzanne Vega is a fave too.

Today's music is less melodic because the rhythm matters so much, but give me those tunes!

Echobelly · 25/11/2024 20:19

Pink Grease - very charismatic frontman, great sound, didn't get anywhere

Florentenes. Newish indie rock band from Manchester. Going to be massive.
