Give me one underrated band/singer/ group

Do you listen to someone and can’t understand how they aren’t megastars??

I mean I get why megastars happen, they usually have mass popular appeal.

Give me your great overlooked musicians/ groups/ bands.

I’ll start: My Brightest Diamond. Not cool, not poppy but just so skilled, well-arranged and melodic.

Agreed re Frank Turner live. I've seen him more than anyone else. Amazing how one man and an acoustic guitar can hold a crowd. Love him best with the Sleeping Souls though.

Me too, and yes to the person I've seen live more than anyone else. Anyone for show 3000?
(Although I'm disappointed he's split with Jess, I suspect a return to drugs, it was her red line)

Laughingravy · 26/11/2024 09:38

New Model Army - been going for years, much bigger on the continent. Rock with a thread of punk and folk running through. Fantastic live.
Melissa Etheridge - well known in the US but not so much here.
Another vote here for Public Service Broadcasting.

Love (that is going back a few decades, I admit).

Forever Changes is one of the greatest albums ever recorded.

The Odd 910

We can only afford once and my DH isn't as keen as I am, but they have so many brilliant songs. In particular, Nothing Ever Happens is a subversive song about prejudice that's still relevant, even while most of the cultural references appear archaic, even to me, and I remember when they were every day occurrences.

Couldn't agree more, it's a rare perfect album and one of my faves. I can't hear Andmoreagain without crying just because it's so beautiful.

She has an outstanding voice. I wish she had more recognition in the UK!

I saw Cardiacs many years ago and agree about the genius of Tim Smith. My son is a massive fan and recently went to the Brighton Cardiacs Family event.

Your son sounds like a cool dude!

Anyone curious, their double album 'Sing to God' is regarded as their masterpiece - there's such a mix of styles on there, something for everyone to love/hate... A challenging beginning followed by a row of right bangers in a punk/prog/pop mash up... 😙

BeastAngelMadwoman · 26/11/2024 00:30

Fleet Foxes
War on Drugs
Father John Misty

I don't think I've heard a Father John Misty track that I didn't love... 👍

6 Music is the place to hear these new and rare bands.

Not rare, but have to say I saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds earlier this month and they were just mighty... 😍

LoosefishScapegrace · 26/11/2024 10:46

Outsider musician Daniel Johnston - autistic, childlike, heart-grabbing melodies and delivery.

And also more mainstream, but Richard Dawson - his album '2020' is stunning - a modern folk sensibility, smashing musicianship, stunning lyrics and a solid conscience holding it all together. In light of the recent floods, listen to The Queen's Head from that album for a beautiful take on our human tinyness in the face of the elements and the redemptive power of people just helping each other - which sounds dry, but he's also very very funny...

Great thread! My contributions

Buffalo Killers
Young Guns
Blood Red Shoes

My local shopping centre was playing Marina and the Diamonds at the weekend. I had a great time singing along!

Anneke van Giersbergen

Thank you. Probably someone I wouldn’t have come across, but listening to her now

(And now ‘auto play’ on Apple Music are playing other Dutch bands!)

GrouchyKiwi · 26/11/2024 11:09

Thomas Dybdahl. He's a Norwegian singer-songwriter, and his early albums especially are amazing. This live version is just gorgeous.

Also The Cat Empire. Aussie ska group, so uplifting and fun. I've loved every single album so far, and even their newer stuff after a change of people is marvellous.

I haven't got a ticket but hoping to pick one up nearer the time. I've also become a fan of bands who've supported him over time - Skinny Lister and The Lottery Winners are two of my faves.
(Do you think that's what it was? I assumed cheating but yes drugs would make more sense, he's certainly partying his way around his current tour. Shame, they did seem so happy together.)

MyOtherProfile · 26/11/2024 12:29

@StrongFemaleCharacter we love Skinny Lister in our house! Great live.

Stripeysuitcase · 26/11/2024 12:52

If you like man and guitar type stuff like early Dylan, check out The Tallest Man On Earth. He has a band now too so there is a lot of variety. He's very talented.

Duffy disappeared, didn't she? I remember some story that she'd been kidnapped and sexually assaulted and thus gave up the music industry but I don't know.

She was sort of Adele before there was Adele and Amy Winehouse after Amy Winehouse but not as troubled. Until she was abducted and raped, of course. This is her wikipedia but it doesn't really explain things very well.

Otherwise, The Dead South. Sort of bluegrass but from Saskatchewan, Canada. Here's the best known tune:

My dh loves The Dead South. He also loves Heilung. I sent him the Glastonbury link from earlier this year which he thoroughly enjoyed.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 26/11/2024 13:42

From the 90s- Cast
From the 00's John Mayer, The Pierces and Glennis Grace
From now...not a scooby 🤔

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 26/11/2024 13:46

@Latevictorianpleasureseeker Ooh which song? I bloody love MATD, her Electra Heart album doesn't have one bad track on it.

piscofrisco · 26/11/2024 13:51

@Spudlover I loved The Airborne Toxic Events earlier albums and I went to see them loads of times. I had a big girl crush on the original woman that played the violin.
