Is it just me but……Grown men who insist on wearing shorts in winter?

Especially the longer shorts that are below the knee. And backward baseball caps. They look like a bloody “Bash Street Kid”.

What about women who wear dresses with bare legs OP?
Or it it just men's legs you don't like?

Ineke · 18/11/2024 01:06

I would much rather see a man in shorts in the winter than a shirtless man about town in the summer.

I completely agree, @Ineke 😂

I only know one man who dresses in shorts all year around and he is an attention seeker so in his case I think it is part of it. I live in a metropolitan area though so it is more of a statement I'd say at this time of year. The only men I know wearing shorts on occasion now, including DH are to run in. I prefer to see casual trousers/ straight to baggy jeans on a man but obviously men can wear what they like (to a point).

Goldenbear · 18/11/2024 04:07

Also, office based work, smart casual but DH can't wear shorts at all as would look ridiculous going for dinners with clients in the evening and my workplace is great same.

DH in shorts all year round - PE teacher.
DS in shorts all year around - autistic.
Me in a dress all year round with no tights - bloody hot classroom.

It’s only DD who goes out each day dressed as if she ready to scale Mt Everest. She’s the outlier!

Think there’s a competition at the post office. Who can wear them in the cold weather the longest.

If there is, my usual postie is winning. I've seen him wearing them when it was snowing.

As a woman who rarely wears jeans or trousers, (I don’t wear shorts though) l’m happy for men to join me and get their legs out.

I live in the warmest se UK corner,10 minutes away from the sea. My postie wears shorts all year, I asked him,he said it was easier to dry off a wet leg than wet trousers. There's a lot of people still wearing shorts. 2 days ago we took our dogs to a forest up past Beachy head, and it was mild enough for shorts. No caps though.

I’m in chilly, freezing just now, literally, Scotland. The car was so iced up this week, the doors were frozen shut. The posties all wear shorts, all year round. It’s the same everywhere, I’m told. It wasn’t always. But it is nowadays, postie uniform.
There are several guys, not posties, who also wear shorts all year, who live in this village. I kind of envy them as I’m walking the dog while wrapped up in a tee shirt, 4 jumpers and a fleece lined Trespass jacket over jeans, under which are thermal trousers/long pants, and 2 pairs of socks in wellies. woolly hats, gloves.

some guys and even girls wear baseball caps, the right way round, shorts or not.

On the way back from the gym this morning I was wrapped up in several layers & saw the teenage girls walking to the bus stop in their school uniforms, mainly with bare legs.

How the hell were they not blue & mottled?

DearDenimEagle · 20/11/2024 10:46

Minus 7 this morning. Two guys in shorts. Long shorts not short shorts .

I’m reminded of when I worked on the trawler in my 20s, and one winters day we sailed into Campbeltown harbour so I could go shopping for food. I walked up the street and shuddered at the teens not much younger than I in their mini skirts at the bus stop and I’d have been one of them not long before. That day I felt smug, and warm. No fashion plate, but in a black, waterproof , fleece lined babygro type garment over my jeans and jumper. I’m sure they thought I looked like an alien from space, but I was toasty in freezing temperatures.

I've actually had a conversation with my postie about this!

He says that because he's walking all the time he's not cold.
But if he wears trousers and they get wet or snowy or icy the wet climbs to them and his skin and he gets colder because of it.

One of the recommendations to protect against hypothermia is to get out of cold wet clothes. It's preferable to be naked under a blanket than to have wet clothes next to your skin because of the effect of water v your natural drying/heat regulation mechanism.

So there is science behind all this.

sashh · 21/11/2024 10:35

@RedToothBrush interesting. Mine says he isn't cold except for his hands, and apparently gloves don't help.

Kittybackdwill · 02/02/2025 20:33

It goes without saying men can wear what they like, but would I go out with a man who wears shorts in all weathers, as my granddaughters would say, "no way" 😅😂🤣
