Is it just me but……Grown men who insist on wearing shorts in winter?

Especially the longer shorts that are below the knee. And backward baseball caps. They look like a bloody “Bash Street Kid”.

My DP wears shorts not silly looking ones though , he is always hot I don't see the harm why would you wear more and be uncomfortable all day

Scrimt · 16/11/2024 13:12

my brother and his son are year round short wearers. With baseball cap.

Tessasays · 16/11/2024 13:14

My husbands a plumber and I keep suggesting maybe it's time to swap the shorts for trousers but he's still going strong mid November I have no idea why

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 16/11/2024 13:15

Skin dries more quickly than fabric, which clings to your legs when wet and keeps them cold for ages, so if you have a job where you have to walk a lot and your legs might get wet then shorts are better.

Was there supposed to be a point in your post? Or was it just being mean and judgemental about something which does not negatively affect you or literally anyone else?

Or was it just a light-hearted thread about people who appear to be immune to the British weather and look a bit daft wearing shorts in midwinter when everyone else is muffled up to the nines?

Jennysi · 16/11/2024 13:22

DH wears shorts in winter because of the therapy he’s on for metastatic cancer. He gets very hot. I do hope that’s okay with you @Conniebygaslight

afrikat · 16/11/2024 13:23

Just got home from the gym and my husband is working in the garden in shorts and a baseball cap 🤣

Jennysi · 16/11/2024 13:25

As a ‘grown’ woman maybe you can use the power of imagination to think people are different with gasp different things going on.

ainkeepsfalling · 16/11/2024 13:25

Someone I know wears combat shorts all year round, I'm sure it's because he's a shortarse and struggles to get trousers the right length. He also wears flip flops unless it's snowing, which is just weird.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 16/11/2024 13:26

I must admit to looking a bit askance at men in shorts in the depths of winter who admit to having the heating turned up high at home, just so they can continue to wear shorts. I mean fine as an everyday thing if you get warm working, but jacking up the thermostat to 25 degrees just so you don't have to put on a pair of kecks makes me frown at them.

mondaytosunday · 16/11/2024 13:26

Ha I was in Durham on a cold wet day the other day and sure enough there was a bloke and I said to my DD 'only in England would there be a guy in shorts'.

HeadJudgeShirley · 16/11/2024 13:31

I love seeing mens' legs about the place, personally

DutchCowgirl · 16/11/2024 13:37

But is it a fashion thing? It is new, right? When i visit my local supermarket I spot at least 3 men in shorts, different ages and styles. I don’t have a real opinion about it, i just wonder why they started doing this all of a sudden.
We already had mornings with 3c so not that warm at all…

Catinabox21 · 16/11/2024 13:37

It's been very mild here - around 14c this week. I get far more twitchy seeing people (mostly women I've noticed) in huge duvet coats with hoodies underneath, hats and scarves. It's like they're dressing for the calendar rather than the actual weather. I run ridiculously hot though.

mydogisthebest · 16/11/2024 13:43

Most look ridiculous as they nearly always wear with a thick jumper or jacket and a winter hat! Just why?

Yes this exactly. It's October now so on with the fur lined hat, gloves and duvet coat even though it's balmy out. I wonder what these super wrapped up people will wear when the real cold weather starts.

This week I was at the designer outlet near me and everyone was dressed like they were going for hot chocolate in Finland on Christmas eve - in a tropically heated shopping centre.

I wear shorts with tights and boots in winter, is that a problem?

Normal for little girls but very odd for grown women, yes

Tell that to Caitlin Moran and Vogue.

We went out to an event last night. My husband wore shorts because we cycled and he didn’t want to overheat or get his trouser leg caught in the chain.

Thankfully, it wasn’t the full on hip hop outfit like the OP described but he did still get a few comments.

Balloonhearts · 16/11/2024 13:51

I really can't say I notice what other people are wearing unless it's particularly nice and I wonder where they got it or they have their arse or boobs hanging out. Shorts wouldn't even be on my radar, never mind a source of annoyance.

StaunchMomma · 16/11/2024 13:56

I slightly agree with you, OP but I think my aversion is personal, rather than general.

SIL's ex lived in jeans shorts. Absolute nob. Proper up himself. I'm cringing just thinking about his hideously hairy, nobbly, skinny legs. They really didn't suit him and he wore them in some really inappropriate places.

My teen son definitely prefers them and literally never feels the cold so I don't feel the need to intervene.

I have zero issue with baseball caps and think they look nicer backwards

downwindofyou · 16/11/2024 15:10

I don't give flying fig what some random man thinks about what I'm wearing so I wouldn't expect one to give a pigs ear about what you or I think about him wearing shorts. Not should he care.

Cotonsugar · 16/11/2024 12:14

Nothing on here is anyone’s business😐

Not quite true.
Sometimes a discussion is helpful e.g. how do I settle my toddler on their own bed, or what do you think of this name, or where can I get decent boots for wide calves, etc etc.

Conniebygaslight · 16/11/2024 16:31

It’s not the bare legs that bother me, it’s the shorts themselves, middle aged men just look like little boys in them. (No issue in summer). Seemingly my opinion is divisive.. 🤣🤣
