Is it just me but……Grown men who insist on wearing shorts in winter?

Especially the longer shorts that are below the knee. And backward baseball caps. They look like a bloody “Bash Street Kid”.

OP posts:

Yeah, it annoys me too, OP. Lots of things irrationally annoy me and that's ok. Am I an awful person who should be banned from MN for daring to have my own silly thoughts? No, just a human.

anxioussister · 16/11/2024 10:00

I don’t mind a man in a backwards cap at all. Those Polaroid glasses that go dark in the sun and make anyone who wears them look like a mole though? Absolute deal breaker. Actually struggle to have conversations with them in sun mode I feel so embarrassed for them.

Send me the shorts wearers and you can befriend the moles 😆

What about women who wear shorts year round? Do you have an issue with us too?
Although don't have a baseball cap....

thelittlestkiwi · 16/11/2024 10:00

I work outdoors a lot and completely agree with the postie. Wet trousers are a nightmare. Wet legs dry faster.

It's a bit warmer where I am than the UK though.

I recently discovered the joys of men's long shorts. So much more comfy, slightly longer and cheaper than women's. And the pockets!

lavenderlou · 16/11/2024 10:01

DH wears shorts in the winter. He never gets cold - there are endless disagreements about heating in our house. He doesn't wear a baseball cap (although does have a hideous flat cap which fortunately he doesn't wear with the shorts).

BunnyLake · 16/11/2024 10:02

My son’s friend (in their 20s) always wears shorts (sans cap) and if he refers to him he says you know, the one who dresses like a toddler.

SweetSixty · 16/11/2024 10:04

DH and I both wear shorts for as much of the year we can.

We are very active and outdoors most of the time.
Wet legs are much better than wet trousers and, if you're very active your body thermostat goes up so you don't feel the cold. Neither of us are overweight and most of the other people I see in shorts (including posties) aren't - they're people who move about outdoors all the time and mostly have legs that are worth looking at!

We rarely have the heating on and indoors feels too warm to us most of the time without it. We only put the heating on when guests are coming so they don't freeze.

VoteDappy · 16/11/2024 10:04

Although it does give me the enjoyment of trying to spot one at the shops on Christmas Eve. I always do!

The Dappy family have a long running game
If it's snowing -there will always be a man in shorts.😂
Winner is the first to declare " shorts!"

SweetSixty · 16/11/2024 10:06

If you are outdoors a lot you don't feel the cold.
I always marvel at how many people wear what I consider too many clothes.
From the 1st October you see people in floor length padded coats, fur lined hats and gloves. How are they not sweating like pigs?

Think there’s a competition at the post office. Who can wear them in the cold weather the longest.

Postmen tend to wear shorts most of the year, as if it rains (which it does in the UK quite a bit) then legs dry quicker than wet trousers. Spending a morning / day in wet trousers must ber unpleasant.

lollypopsforme · 16/11/2024 10:07

Have you seen what some women wear.
I look like ive been pulled through a wool machine with knit wear in winter.
While other women have there arses hanging out all year round.
But it dont bother me good for them.
As long as we are happy with what we are doing and wearing its not hurting anyone.

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/11/2024 10:08

@SweetSixty that is true. Mr Monkey claims his legs are immune to cold after years of playing football outside in all weathers.

DoloresDelEriba · 16/11/2024 10:08

They look ridiculous. We are entitled to think that. And we are entitled to express that. That is the whole point of free speech and debate. Lots of people on here and unfortunately in life don’t seem to understand this concept. And that’s a big problem.

I call one of our neighbours 'the toddler' to distinguish him from other neighbours. There is just something about him lumbering around in his long shorts and socks that gives off toddler vibes.

iamawarriorwhojustcrieseasily · 16/11/2024 10:09

My Husband wears shorts all year round, for various reasons ( his temp, preservation of his leg hairs as apparently long legged items of clothing rub them off?! ) and now alas, I have a Son who refuses to wear anything but shorts, and he also likes a baseball cap....In their defence we are very down south and it rarely gets baltic like it does up north, but still. There we are.

And it affects nobody's life but mine so i don't see what right anybody else has to moan about it!

User1836484645R · 16/11/2024 10:17

He’s got an increasing group of “retired men who play golf and have an allotment” friends who have gradually all started to wear this uniform. It’s a sight to behold.

My husband’s uniform since retiring early is a boiler suit. I have noticed that our retired next door neighbour is also increasing wearing a boiler suit.

One defining characteristic of everyone who wears shorts in winter is surely that they don't care what other people think of their short wearing. I don't so long as I'm comfortable.

I think other people often look ridiculous in how they present themselves and I don't expect them to give a fig what I think.

JeremiahBullfrog · 16/11/2024 10:20

If they're doing it for work reasons then that's different. But otherwise I tend to agree with OP! Then again I also disapprove of anyone who wears tracksuit bottoms when not engaged in sport ...

SweetSixty · 16/11/2024 10:21

If DH isn't in shorts he's in a boiler suit. It's because of the kind of hobbies and projects he has.

People don't always choose clothes for style reasons (or to conform/impress) but for practical reasons.

avaritablevampire · 16/11/2024 10:26

Dh wears shorts when working outside, apparently wet legs dry much quicker than trousered legs, although it's been a relatively dry autumn so far, when it's raining it's shorts all the way (apparently waterproof trousers just don't cut it!)

Nourishinghandcream · 16/11/2024 10:27

It's not just men though is it?

Our (female) postie has just delivered a parcel and she wears shorts all year (never seen her in long trousers).
We gat a lot of walkers near us (there is a byway just across the road) and a few times a week we get groups of elderly ramblers going past and inevitably some of them (both men & women) are in shorts.

SweetSixty · 16/11/2024 10:28

@avaritablevampire Waterproof trousers are so sweaty they're like wearing a sauna. Also you have to put up with the noise they make - rustling like you're walking through cornflakes everywhere you go.

Fakinguntilyoumakeit · 16/11/2024 10:28

I actually like the look, but I'm not into the whole metro sexual overly groomed look. I hate short jeans, no socks, skinny jeans on men and overly tight clothing.

Old school relaxed fit jeans/shorts, a nice room to breath tshirt, with or without baseball cap I think is absolutely fine tbh, unless going to dinner, work or a smarter event. Dh gets hot, and I actually prefer it than a man who looks in the mirror, and takes longer to get ready than me! I know I wear baseball caps myself if walking/jogging, would you judge me, have been known to take my coat off in September, if I'm feeling hot?

Each to their own. As long as they're clean, and the clothes are decent, shorts I'm all for, plus dh has nice legs 😂 I always think it looks manly that they can't feel the cold as much, rather than a suited and booted wet rag type in a scarf!

Why does it bother you so much op? I don't feel the need to create a thread on overly vein men.

BackOnTheAntibiotics · 16/11/2024 10:29

If I was a bloke, once tick season was over. I would wear shorts.

No BB cap though. They look knobby no matter which way around they are. Unless you are on a fishing trip, lose them.

Edingril · 16/11/2024 10:30

No different to women choosing to wearing nothing much when they go out on a night or whenever if they are happy why does it matter
