Is it just me but……Grown men who insist on wearing shorts in winter?

Especially the longer shorts that are below the knee. And backward baseball caps. They look like a bloody “Bash Street Kid”.

OP posts:

Just been out in the fields/forest walking the dog.
Nowhere near the sea or a swimmable body of water.
Passed many women in Dry robes.
It's an unusual " fashion "trend .
Unless you're on /going to a beach, swimming.
Akin to going out in your dressing gown/bathrobe.
Assume men who wear shorts in winter get hot and women in dry robes get cold ?
No baseball caps in sight here and the odd man in shorts wears chunky boots/socks/warm jumpers and woolly hats.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 16/11/2024 11:02

Think it's standard dress for posties.

Peony15 · 16/11/2024 11:08

Our posties wear shorts and they look fab. And they have dog treats in the side pocket, generously handing them out when one walks by them.
And wait for dog take post from letter box ( dog inside ) .
We love our shorts wearing posties !!

worcesterpear · 16/11/2024 11:09

I don't really think it's a thing with back to front baseball caps. Most of the men that wear shorts year round are slightly older and they don't tend to wear baseball caps, back to front or otherwise. It doesn't bother me and I think the postmen and women always look comfortable in their shorts.

One of my parent’s friends, since early retirement 10+ years ago, has had a “uniform” of;

Short sleeved gingham shirt
Microfleece or padded body warmer zipped up.
Chino shorts

All from Regatta.

Socks and Skechers or socks and velcro sandals.

Wears some variation of this daily, rain, shine or snow. Christmas Eve. The theatre. Funerals.

He’s got an increasing group of “retired men who play golf and have an allotment” friends who have gradually all started to wear this uniform. It’s a sight to behold.

Whist I agree that each to their own, I look at the dapper Jeff Goldblum at 72 and think why can't they at least do this for an 'occasion'! 😊😊😊

Tryingtohelp12 · 16/11/2024 11:12

My 6yo is wearing shorts today and any time he chooses what to wear he picks out shorts. He runs hot naturally and finds shorts comfier. He also hates jumpers, but will wear long sleeve t shirts and a coat. It doesn’t impact me at all I just let him go with it. He’s not stupid and natural consequences of getting a bit cold will eventually get him to wear trousers. Or not

Silvertulips · 16/11/2024 11:13

So woman wear skirts in winter - what’s the difference?

Bideshi · 16/11/2024 11:15

Agree OP. It's one thing if they're sporty, and I accept to the postie/shorts look, but there are a lot of 20 stone carries-all-before shorts wearers that just shouldn't.
I suppose it the imperative to show off those expensive tattoos in many cases.

I love my husband in his work shorts! The only thing I hate on men is wearing their jeans so low their pants show.

Exactly, I think there is a difference between want to be rapper in bum hanging out and high top bucket baseball cap with a big edge, then sensible to the knee shorts, and a normal sized cap.

If I was to have a 'subjective' opinion like the op clearly has by inventing a whole thread on her/his opinion, than I don't like the tight suit pants with buttoned to top tucked in checked shirt look, esp for the supermarket! Maybe this is an age thing, but I hope dh never does this at any stage.

I saw a woman recently picking up her daughter from school in a bright neon orange Dryrobe, bare legs, flip flops, hair slicked back and piled high on her head with something white in it, looking like she had a hairmask on ... She'd rolled up the sleeves of the Dryrobe and her arms were bare and she'd unzipped the top bit to look like a v-neck so it looked like she was totally naked under the Dryrobe. I recognised her as the owner of the local beauty salon, on her Monday day off.

When I was at school showing up dressed like that at pick up would have been automatic justification for disowning your Mum and pretending not to know her in public until you got married. I'm sure there will posters trotting along to say "how inclusive and wonderful that times have changed". I'd think it was great if times have changed so much that kids wouldn't turn around and say "Mia,
what is your Mum WEARING?!" anymore. But honestly, it wouldn't be me showing my kid up like that. No matter how much times have changed.

Think there’s a competition at the post office. Who can wear them in the cold weather the longest.

Some say it's because when their out in wet weather the bottoms of their trousers get wet. Some just feel more comfortable wearing shorts. Not that it's anyone else's business.

Tights.

midgetastic · 16/11/2024 11:18

Women don't wear tights in the summer or when they feel hot so it's stupid to have a different rule for men and women

midgetastic · 16/11/2024 11:19

There is a competition in the Royal Mail here about shorts

Helped I think by heated seats

Toastghost · 16/11/2024 11:20

Dressing for comfort, good for them. You might not want to hear what they think of your appearance either!

Fakinguntilyoumakeit · 16/11/2024 11:21

Fonzies · 16/11/2024 11:00

lol at people being so offended op. I don’t get it either. No one can be that hot. I wondered if some are trying to prove they’re tough? I’ve seen men wearing shorts in the snow around here.

Well they're obviously not cold are they? Or, they would be wearing more layers.

midgetastic · 16/11/2024 11:21

I love how other people assume they know better than the person themselves how hot they are

Silvertulips · 16/11/2024 11:22

Generally it’s colder sitting still indoor than being active outdoors.

Maybe you should try it.

Cantabulous · 16/11/2024 11:22

Yes it’s my biggest pet peeve. They look stupid, like overgrown toddlers waiting for their mums to tell them what is appropriate to wear. Bleurrgh

hattie43 · 16/11/2024 11:25

I think they look stupid OP you aren't alone.

midgetastic · 16/11/2024 11:21

Yes, they must think they can body hop, quantum leap style. I wonder if they go through the menopause how they will feel if a man tells them "how can you be this hot?"

ThatsNotMyTeen · 16/11/2024 11:26

I can understand it actually. Trousers might get wet and uncomfortable but with shorts your legs will just get cold.

Fakinguntilyoumakeit · 16/11/2024 11:30

I am a UK size 8-10, and my legs don't get cold, unlike my upper body. They might do if I was trekking the himalayas though! 😂

VickyEadieofThigh · 16/11/2024 11:33

I can't see anything objectionable in shorts to or below the knee. Tiny short shorts on grown men - I don't like so much.

afrikat · 16/11/2024 11:33

My husband wears shorts sometimes in winter and is partial to a baseball cap. I think he looks hot 🔥 It helps that he's a 6'4 triathlete and the sporty look works for him
