Share foods you think are overrated or just don't like (or defend your favourites!).

Overrated imo:
salted caramel,
ruby chocolate,
.....apple crumble.

https://www.cuisineaz.com/recettes/encornet-farci-a-la-setoise-105862.aspx

It's real. Sorry that it's in French but you should be able to make it out. Serve with rice or pasta!

It's on the school lunch rotation here, on the rôtisserie counter/ready meal hot plate thing in supermarkets, you can be served it unawares in hospital.

It's out to get you.

@WeWillGetThereInTheEnd I'm with you on the raw onions - taint everything they touch and you taste them for hours afterwards. Love pickled onions, though.
Pork belly, just really fatty
Cherry tomatoes, all skin and seeds
Blue cheese, love other strong cheese, but not blue cheese

Belly pork is the best!

What. The. Fuck.

And that comes from someone who chicken's feet and liked 'em.

Sorry! I got distracted doing my cut and paste! I hope you can find my authentic encornets recipe further up the thread just in case you want to make it at home! I don't want you to miss out! Love and kisses!

If you are a really good girl, I might share my recipe for pieds et paquets. Feet and packets. I'll leave you lingering. Or vomiting.

I once separated tissues and other debris from a bowl of vomit and secretions by (gloved) hand. Bring it.

Thanks for the recipe, I was able to read most of it. I still don't think those textures belong together!

By the by, I think the vomit filtering was a prank by a mentor who said it had to be measured extremely accurately. Considering the other student had been soaked in a very sticky liquid medicine as part of her last day, and given I had a 90-minute commute home, I went along with it.

Sweet potatoes. They're just bland and sweet so ruin any savoury dish they are in.
Parsnips: similar to sweet potato but also perfumed.
Earl grey tea: like weak tea with perfume.

Nando's. It's just a grilled chicken salad sandwich.
Pizza Hut: doughy and overpriced.

All puddings: they're ok, but 99 times out of 100 I'd rather have another starter or a cheeseboard.

FFS - Krispy Kreme doughnuts take the biscuit (see what I did there?!) I happened to be in Harrod's food hall when they a had massive introduction / palaver of rolling out warm glazed doughnuts on a conveyer belt and giving out free samples. I tried. Reader, it was vile. I couldn't get my head around the technology involved into frying pure fat and sugar - in fat.

ForGreyKoala · 10/11/2024 05:39

Salted caramel
Avocado
Salmon

Firstimpressions · 10/11/2024 05:54

All food containing coriander 😫and there are so many chefs obsessed with it.

Turkey - even the high-end ones eaten in 1st class restaurants are tasteless.
And as for the inevitable leftovers, words fail me.
Just a minute, this is MN, so I can say they're fucking shite !

I once had turkey that was good, at a Christmas lunch held at the Butcher's Hall (City Livery company for butchers' HQ). All other turkey I've ever eaten in my life has been tasteless and disappointing.

A lot of what has been quoted on this thread can be nice if they are really good quality, including cherry tomatoes - but usually when you see them available they are poor quality so tasteless. Marks & Spencer's ones are usually tasty and not too sweet.

Except I'm with everyone who said avocado, and I'd add "flavoured" teas, except good Earl Grey such as Williamson & Magor - Twinings EG is foul. And as for the 'biscuit' flavoured ones...

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/11/2024 06:05

If you ever need to get rid of disgusting food, you call it a delicacy - then people queue up and pay a lot of money for it.

For example;
oysters,
snails,
fish eggs,
brains,
tripe,
other offal,
crickets,
locusts,
snakes,
eels,
etc.

CalicoPusscat · 10/11/2024 06:12

Pleased that so many mentioned salted caramel.

I can't take to: cherry tomatoes, chocolate chip cookies, hot chocolate.

I do love oysters though.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 10/11/2024 06:43

What a great thread @LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole

(… and it’s yet to descend into any kind of bun fight (pun intended 🤣🤣🤣)

My list:

Tofu (turns out I’m allergic to soya so can dodge that for the foreseeable)

Chicken feet (or chicken PAWS as labelled in my local oriental supermarket🤣)

Raw cabbage

Most pulses…

dontcryformeargentina · 10/11/2024 07:31

Tuna steaks
Potatoes dauphinois
Duck legs

PuppyMonkey · 10/11/2024 08:58

Gravy. Ruins a perfectly nice meal every time.

Cream teas.

Custard. See note above re gravy.

Pasta.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/11/2024 09:03

Oysters - unless they’re cooked.
Can never understand why they’re seen as a ‘luxury’ - in Dickens’ time oysters were seen as poor people’s food. IIRC from The Pickwick Papers, ‘It’s a werry remarkable circumstance, how oysters and poverty go together.’

Deathraystare · 10/11/2024 09:04

Salted caramel
Chocolate chip cookies Honorary exceptions to Nains gluten free ones. Not as sweet and seemed baked longer. Delicious!
Sweet potato and butternut squash - in every fucking vegetarian recipe!! No!!!!

Deathraystare · 10/11/2024 09:05

Oh and cauliflower this, cauliflower that. Tastes and smells like it was left in a cupboard.

linelgreen · 10/11/2024 09:25

Caviar we went on a cruise earlier this year where caviar was available on demand but I just cannot understand the fascination with salty squishy fish eggs!

quirkychick · 10/11/2024 14:50

@Deathraystare I agree about Nairn's chocolate chip oatcakes, v nice and not too sweet.
Afternoon tea is v overrated and overpriced. Looks lovely, but I'd rather have tea and choose my cake or scone.

Davros · 10/11/2024 16:38

I don’t like raspberries or blackberries. Taste good but too pippy

quirkychick · 10/11/2024 18:08

@Davros my dp would agree with you!

Flavoured yogurt.

I get so annoyed that I can’t buy natural yogurt in kids sized and style pots.

I get these. Trying to cut down on my sugars. They're not super thick but the flavour is acceptable. A little tangy but quite mild. I hate pissing about with giant pots.

BeatriceAndLottie · 11/11/2024 04:53

Steak!
Berries

WateryBottle · 11/11/2024 04:57

Crispy duck pancakes, it’s like eating rotten rat corpse.

You’re all wrong about salted caramel I’m afraid 😋

sashh · 11/11/2024 05:15

Strawberries.

They are evil.

They have seeds on the outside, no fruit should have seeds on the outside.

They appear EVERYWHERE, in puddings, with steak, in shampoo, lots of places they have no reason to be.

You can order a lovely sounding chocolate desert in a restaurant and it comes with a bloody strawberry sliced up on top.

They stink too.

And did I tell you they are evil? I swear the reason they have seeds on the outside is because they send them off in the middle of the night to do who knows what.

Pure evil.

If you ever see a strawberry riding a crab it is the end of the world.
