Share foods you think are overrated or just don't like (or defend your favourites!).

Overrated imo:
salted caramel,
ruby chocolate,
.....apple crumble.

Fish. Only acceptable fish is cod in batter/breadcrumbs, all other fish is evil. It stinks, it tastes as bad as it smells.

Haddock is superior!

Well it is dead flesh, as is meat. So it’s not surprising really.

Goes without saying really but any 'Viral' recipe on social media. I only have this and Youtube - don't even have Facebook so am quite untouched by these things but I have seen the block of feta cheese, surrounded by cherry tomatoes in a baking dish gimmick quite a few times.

When put in the oven, the feta is supposed to melt and the tiny, pippy, covered in skin, fleshless tomatoes turn into a delicious rich sauce. A few stirs and add cooked pasta - fabulous!

Only it can't work can it?

Fresh fish when cooked well doesn’t smell fishy at all. I think it’s a British tendency to not do fish well hence the fishy smell.

Crispy duck pancakes, it’s like eating rotten rat corpse.

You’re all wrong about salted caramel I’m afraid 😋

Poor you.
I'm glad I've never been so starved I was reduced to eating rotten rat corpse.

It really does but try it with Boursin cheese. You need more than one block though to get enough sauce.

I take the Krispy Kremes and add to them Tim Horton doughnuts. Although TH are a little better than KK.

Oreos, tastes like dog biscuits.

I get these. Trying to cut down on my sugars. They're not super thick but the flavour is acceptable. A little tangy but quite mild. I hate pissing about with giant pots.

Thanks!

My main gripe is that the kids have peppa pig yoghurts several times a week at nursery. We only have natural yoghurt at home.

A 100ml tub is a bit big for a 3 year old. I wish there was a straight replacement for kids yoghurts that DS won’t mind when everyone else is eating the peppa pig one.

Salted caramel
avocado
cucumber, although I love watching the cucumber salad videos 😂
truffle
pineapple
halloumi - it gives off rubber… just can’t get behind it. Dd and DP love it.
pesto
hot chocolate…. I don’t really drink any hot drinks but I can’t stand hot chocolate.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 11/11/2024 23:31

I had to look up bubble tea….so it’s sort of runny tapioca pudding watered down with tea ( probably sweet, too). I really wish I hadn’t found out about that late at night.

Salted caramel was fine when it was made with proper sea salt big crystals, it was invented in Guerande where they make/ harvest the salt; too sweet for me, but DH had an ice cream of that flavour there and said it was okay, ditto the salted chocolate.

Pringles…I’d rather eat the tube ( probably couldn’t tell much difference).

I’m sorry but I love all those things

As do most everyone I know! But, personally I feel completely underwhelmed by them.

Macaroni cheese or cauliflower cheese. Hate with a vengeance.

But try macaroni cheese in Colin Spencer's recipe:

Alternate cooked macaroni and grated cheese in 3 layers, on the bottom sage derby, in the middle gruyere, on top parmesan. Then over this pour a white sauce flavoured with a bayleaf. Bake in a medium oven for 30 mins.

It transforms the run-of-the-mill version.

Neck of lamb chops. Spinal cord and gristle, in essence.

UGH yes. I haven't eaten meat for well over 30 years, but I remember the neck of lamb stew my mum used to make. (She was a fine cook - just a pity her judgement deserted her on this one ingredient.) You should be able to eat a stew straight off, not have to pick bits of bone and gristle out with every mouthful.

Quails' eggs. They were urged on me by a friend but they seemed very ordinary to me. Stick to hens' eggs: just as good a flavour, and several times bigger, yet cheaper.

Latte. Why bother drinking coffee if it just tastes of milk anyway? And the person in front of me in the queue always wants a latte, which requires elaborate preparation and holds the rest of us up. I call it an arsing around special.

Sweet potatoes. Perversely, sweet potato fries are more expensive than the ordinary kind, but be grateful: if they knew what they were doing it would be the other way round.

The cheese sauce makes me nauseous.

FlorbelaEspanca · 03/04/2025 20:46

Cauliflower cheese - no amount of cheese sauce can disguise the fact that cauliflower is disgusting. Ditto cauliflower rice. You're not fooling anyone!

But it's so often overcooked. Use only an inch of water in the bottom of the pan, and when it boils let the cauliflower steam for 2 minutes only. That's all it needs and it won't be the usual mush.
