Share foods you think are overrated or just don't like (or defend your favourites!).

Overrated imo:
salted caramel,
ruby chocolate,
.....apple crumble.

Bacon. Smells amazing. Tastes slightly disappointing.

Ice cream.

Cake

JaffavsCookie · 09/11/2024 19:13

Shellfish
smoked anything, kippers 😩
“cakes” I don’t hate all cake, but the sort you get from tea shops etc with far too much super sickly icing, or where the portion size is 3x what it should be and you feel guilty for leaving most of it.

Chicken wings - people go mad for them but they're just bones and really messy. (I feel the same about ribs)

I have a theory that there are factories full of mutant chickens with at least 6 wings per bird. There's far more chicken wings around than the other parts so where are they coming from? Chinny rub.
I also agree with lobster. Dsis and I gave it a really good go recently at a highly regarded seafood restaurant. Nah, never again

FloatyBoaty · 09/11/2024 19:16

overrated :

Oysters

Booja Booja truffles

Vodka- just makes me fighty

Whipped anything in fancy restaurants. Feta. Potatoes. No.

Pizza (Its alright but just never quite is what I want it to be. And yes I’ve had proper pizza in Naples at that place that invented the margarita. It was nice. That’s it).

I’ll fight you to defend the honour of:

Sushi

Champagne

Cheesy chips

Gelato

Guinness

Kale

Mochi. Especially Matcha mochi. Two silly things in one.

Black Forest gateau.
Panettone is just the most boring super dry tasteless thing, I mean why.
Donuts - where I'm from, a donut is fried in oil, so it's a soft indulgent delicacy. The Krispy Kreme ones are just...bread.

I will defent caviar and truffles though. Fresh truffle shaved over your pasta is heaven.

I'm with you on Krispy Kreme, overpriced sugary stale bread rolls...but panettone needs to be toasted and slathered with butter...then it's delicious

KnopkaPixie · 09/11/2024 19:22

Quinoa.

sprigatito · 09/11/2024 19:22

And tofu is putty. It has no flavour and an unpleasant texture. I've had so many earnest vegans tell me "oh, you just haven't had it cooked right"... I have. If you smother it in seasonings and fry it so hard it's almost unrecognisable, then it's possible to choke it down if there's nothing else. But it's still shit.

AnxieTeapot · 09/11/2024 19:27

Salted caramel is disgusting, thank you for raising awareness.

56Chandeliers · 09/11/2024 19:32

Tofu out of a carton just fried is bland and boring, whatever the sauce. Deep fried tofu of the type you get from a Chinese supermarket chiller in a Thai yellow curry, on the other hand, would probably be my death row last meal choice.

The chicken wing conspiracy theory is that on one fine day, our fast food overlords thought, "What can we do with these offcuts? Oh, just slather them in spice and msg and make a marketing campaign with gurlies an' thang."

And the world was fooled.

Then there's there's the "Baby bananas psychological operation." That came straight outta' Costa Rica and was funded by the CIA.

Joke. Lightheated. Tongue in cheek.

LonelyInDville · 09/11/2024 19:37

Wine
Sushi
Avocado
beans on toast
bangers and mash

ttcat37 · 09/11/2024 19:38

Meat

mewkins · 09/11/2024 19:39

Mashed potato. All the lovely things to do with a potato, and yet some choose to mash it 🤢

blacksax · 09/11/2024 19:41

Blueberries. Dull as fuck.

Bubble tea. Tapioca was utterly, disgustingly vile in school puddings, and the intervening years have not improved matters.

Chips made from sweet potatoes. They are many things, but chips they ain't.

Bagels. See blueberries.

CrispieCake · 09/11/2024 19:44

Lentils. Functional but unexciting. And yet everyone nowadays has a recipe that they swear is absolutely delicious.

It's a lie. It's really that we're all too broke for meat.

Sweet potatoes 🤢
Blueberries - most berries actually!

Malbecfan · 09/11/2024 19:58

Sourdough toast
Scones with jam & cream. I live in Devon and don't give a shiny shit which way you do the jam or cream. Strawberry jam is sickly and I detest anything creamy or buttery.
Shellfish
Mushy peas
Rice/sago puddings make me heave
Beetroot
Bubble tea - way too sickly
Any kind of doughnut

StiggyZardust · 09/11/2024 20:01

Overnight oats are the WORST

socialdilemmawhattodo · 09/11/2024 20:01

Plenty on here that I love but my absolute overrated food was this: Pizzoccheri
Italian buckwheat pasta. Just vile. I had to politely eat my way through a meal where a local dish had been lovingly prepared. I managed by the end putting odd bits into a napkin. Never had to do that before - it was inedible.
