Overrated foods (lighthearted)

Share foods you think are overrated or just don't like (or defend your favourites!).

Overrated imo:
salted caramel,
ruby chocolate,
.....apple crumble.

Any 'luxury' deviation from a favourite, like chocolate eclairs that become chocolate eclairs with salted caramel custard, and real gold flakes 🥴

GroovyChick87 · 09/11/2024 18:36

Pumpkin spice flavoured things. I had a pumpkin spice coffee from Greggs, it was horrible.

Now I will defend my favourites:

Roast parsnips. I like the caramalised rooty goodness. Halfway between a potato and a carrot. Just take the funny woody bit out of the middle. Much nicer than sweet potato.

Fresh sardines. 'Oh, the bones! Oh the skin!' Just go with it. More olive oil, grilly a bit more crispy, squeezy more lemon. Feel the fishy goodness and the natural collagen plumping the wrinkles, loosening the knees.

Turkish Delight, rosewater or orange water flavoured arabic or indian sweets. Ground almond, marzipan things. No. It is not too sweet for you. Just surrender.

Sardines! Grilled, salty sardines... heaven!

KnopkaPixie · 09/11/2024 18:40

Neck of lamb chops. Spinal cord and gristle, in essence.

PassCaring · 09/11/2024 18:42

Most carby comfort foods. Mash, toast, jacket potatoes.

Agree Red Velvet.
Smoothies

KatharinaRosalie · 09/11/2024 18:43

Black Forest gateau.
Panettone is just the most boring super dry tasteless thing, I mean why.
Donuts - where I'm from, a donut is fried in oil, so it's a soft indulgent delicacy. The Krispy Kreme ones are just...bread.

I will defent caviar and truffles though. Fresh truffle shaved over your pasta is heaven.

Flavoured yogurt.

I get so annoyed that I can’t buy natural yogurt in kids sized and style pots.

LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole · 09/11/2024 18:45

@KnopkaPixie excellent advocacy skills. I completely agree with you on roast parnsips.

Meat, fish, alcohol, chocolate, coffee, anything pickled, anything spicy.

Georgyporky · 09/11/2024 18:46

Turkey - even the high-end ones eaten in 1st class restaurants are tasteless.
And as for the inevitable leftovers, words fail me.
Just a minute, this is MN, so I can say they're fucking shite !

QueenCamilla · 09/11/2024 18:46

1)Fish and chips.
I like fish.
I like chips.
But then there's this abomination that sits in your guts like a sack of rocks. I'm sure it's all they fed to that last Dodo bird.

2)Sunday roast. Just so... Blah.

  1. Lettuce. There's so many colourful, glorious vegetables. Just why?

*Unlike @KnopkaPixie , I like my delights slippy & slimy. I'll use all aids available (Sauce? Tea? Wine? ) to make it so, particularly if it's fish&chips.
Partial to Oysters.

NDornotND · 09/11/2024 18:49

Mashed potato
Sweet potato
Cucumber (unless in the context of a crispy duck pancake)
Caviar

Lobster is my favourite though 😋

Cally102 · 09/11/2024 18:50

Olives
Tofu
Ice-cream
Love a roast dinner

Lostmum1906 · 09/11/2024 18:50

Oreos
Biscoff

QueenCamilla · 09/11/2024 18:53

Meat, fish, alcohol, chocolate, coffee, anything pickled, anything spicy.

And now I'm scared. @PyreneanAubrie is the reason why I sleep with my lights on.

Best way to enjoy those oysters anyway 😉

KnopkaPixie · 09/11/2024 19:02

Selyodka Pud Shoboy. Or Shuba. This delicious Russian and Ukrainian salad dish whose name translates as Herring under a fur coat has been the bane of my life.

This is how you make it:

Hard boiled eggs.
Boiled beetroot. (Not the same if you buy beetroot ready prepared. Boil your own.)
Pickled Herring.
Boiled and cooled potato.
Mayonnaise.
Onion.

Prepare everything. Cut everything into tiny, tiny, tiny pieces. Make a layered salad. I can't explain it. I'll post a link to a picture. If I can summon the energy. Not that it ever looks like the way I was taught.

It takes a whole day to make. Another day to 'let the flavours develop' and is not very nice.

Hugely overrated by our Slavic friends. Olivye Salat is even worse.* *

AtleastitsnotMonday · 09/11/2024 19:03

Chicken wings - people go mad for them but they're just bones and really messy. (I feel the same about ribs)

SiobhanSharpe · 09/11/2024 19:05

Not the real thing but the absolute travesties masquerading as sticky toffee pudding served in too many pubs and restaurants.
A light brown, bland sponge pudding does not cut it one bit. Where's the toffee? Where's the sticky?
I suspct many of these recipes don't contain chopped dates (absolutely essential for the deep flavour) nor the hot topping of brown sugar and cream.
Oh, and turkey.

56Chandeliers · 09/11/2024 19:06

Crisps - I’ll eat them on autopilot if they’re there, but they’re boring. I don’t include things like wotsits and space raiders here - love those!

Chips - ditto. Dull.

Both of the above are a waste of potato.

Sundried tomato - I read the other day that these were coming back and my heart sank. They’re ok, but last time around they were in everything.

Boring desserts. I mean either lacklustre restaurant offerings (brownie, Eton mess, sticky toffee pudding - yawn) or those super-sugary Oreo/Jaffa cake/biscoff flavour concoctions. I always wonder why well-made, creative, not overly sweet adult desserts aren’t a thing.

After I had proper sticky toffee pudding done well in Scotland, I’m always disappointed by the English offerings- even at fancy places- nowhere near as good.

AnnaMagnani · 09/11/2024 19:10

Biscoff
Matcha
Krispy Kreme
Bubble tea
Red velvet

Basically anything that is a huge trend and supposed to be the best thing ever.

WhereistheDinrefrigerator · 09/11/2024 19:11
