Share foods you think are overrated or just don't like (or defend your favourites!).

Overrated imo:
salted caramel,
ruby chocolate,
.....apple crumble.

95% of roasts

gin - it's alright but I didn't get the gin collecting hype during lockdown

Oreo flavoured everything - they taste of nothing but sugar

Tofu out of a carton just fried is bland and boring, whatever the sauce. Deep fried tofu of the type you get from a Chinese supermarket chiller in a Thai yellow curry, on the other hand, would probably be my death row last meal choice.

Nah I’ve tried all variations of tofu, including in SE Asia. Can confirm, it’s overrated.

the80sweregreat · 09/11/2024 20:05

Sourdough bread looks and smells fantastic in the shops but tastes weird.
Even toasted with a topping it was just odd.

U13579 · 09/11/2024 20:07

Chip shop chips

Cerialkiller · 09/11/2024 20:07

Any shop bought cake. Just taste of sugar as they take out the butter.

Oysters - slimy ewww

Avocado - just why. I felt vindicated when I found out how bad they were for the environment and the issues they cause in south America.

Lobster. Tried it and it's...fine but not nearly worth the hype.

Agree about sirloin steak. Rump all the way, cheaper and juicier.

Salmon with egg e.g. eggs Florentine. Way too rich and always makes me nauseous.

TinyGingerCat · 09/11/2024 20:09

Strawberries, but especially strawberries dipped in chocolate. They are not sexy or luxurious, they are grim (a strawberry shoved in a glass of fizz is equally disgusting)

Neurodiversitydoctor · 09/11/2024 20:18

Sandwiches- when there are so many other things you could eat for lunch why ?
Anything made of floppy white bread- boring as anything and so bad for you.

All " cooked meats" eg: ham, chicken , salami etc- also incredibly bad for you.

Cannot understand what people have against brownies or avocados- food of the gods IMO.

Tiredmomma86 · 09/11/2024 20:19

Liver-yuck yuck yuck 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

WasteOfPlateRealEstate · 09/11/2024 20:22

Name changed especially because the poster tickled me with her terminology.

Gravy-the devil's diarrhoea
Pumpkin spice or anything with nutmeg or cloves. Evil spices.
Eggs 🤢
Sourdough although it's ok for toast
Macaroons/macarons
Party food and special festive anything- full of chemicals and palm oil

I'll probably think of more.

the80sweregreat · 09/11/2024 20:22

Agree Liver is just awful
How people like it with bacon is beyond me
Nasty stuff !

Thischangeseverything · 09/11/2024 20:23

Very little, because I think most things can be amazing if cooked well.

But I am so often disappointed by shop/cafe/restaurant chocolate cakes that look really chocolatey but actually are dry and tasteless that I mostly avoid them these days.

Bacon maybe? I like it, but I can take it or leave it. I don't understand people who say things like, "I used to be vegetarian but I gave up because of bacon!"

the80sweregreat · 09/11/2024 20:25

Bacon is overrated , salty and just meh these days.
Jack fruit is nasty too

Ti7ch · 09/11/2024 20:28

Avocado. Had it once and was disappointed. It was so bland

YaB · 09/11/2024 20:29

Caviar….. uncooked salted fish eggs?! Absolutely disgusting and I wouldn’t eat some if you paid me a grand, same for…

Oysters…. How the hell can these be considered a luxury? Massive uncooked bogey textured salty chewy rottenness?! Absolutely vile

Devastated999 · 09/11/2024 20:30

Cake is not a texture I enjoy

Sandwiches are underwhelming

All alcohol tastes horrible

Roast potatoes

Ice cream

the80sweregreat · 09/11/2024 20:30

I've never tried oysters as just looking at them is enough to know I'd hate them so much !

YaB · 09/11/2024 20:33

Same! And the fact they’d charge us a small fortune for the “luxury” of trying them.
I’s rather eat the shell they come in!

Thischangeseverything · 09/11/2024 20:33

Having read the full thread I agree with :
Pannetone
Ribs
Overnight oats

Isnt that the taste of the sour part? Which I love when served fresh in a cafe, but seem to totally lose at home with my utterly expensive purchase from the supermarket. I have learnt my lesson and no more. I'll eat it out but not in.

Shhhthedogssleeping · 09/11/2024 20:35

Anything from the supermarket by Heston Blumenthal
fresh tuna
pork pies - waxy pastry, evil jelly, gristly over-herby, fatty pork innards.
cumberland sausages - dog turd shaped, gristly, over-seasoned pork
sushi
hot crossed buns. Over spiced gone wrong tea cakes.
ramen - why does it come in baking bowl sized dishes . Too much liquid and gets boring after you’ve got through a couple of cm’s in. Too much, too salty, too watery.
pho - see ramen.
Jewish chicken soup. Even famous places in NY and London can’t make it like my Grandma used to. Doesn’t taste of chicken , lacks seasoning, matzos balls too big, too heavy and bland. Always disappointing whichever restaurant/deli I’ve tried.
Coffee - always smells wonderful, very rarely tastes as good as it smells.
sourdough toast - like chomping through setting concrete
All takeaways
French onion soup - too rich, too oniony, big floaty cheese on toast drowning in the middle of it, like a big snot mountain
everything from Greggs

the80sweregreat · 09/11/2024 20:36

Most cakes are just overrated calories but I don't mind cheesecake. Although that can be disappointing too ;(

socialdilemmawhattodo · 09/11/2024 20:37

I drown mine with any vinaigrette dressing. I buy the extra-large - I think they keep better and of course any bad bits are a smaller % loss. I like mine in a general salad, but also love the classic caprese.

the80sweregreat · 09/11/2024 20:30

I usually like them but I'm currently pregnant and omg the thought of the beards and the jelly texture and sensation in my throat is too much!

This happened with sushi in my first pregnancy. Previously loved it but suddenly the mere thought of eating raw fish made me vomit. Still can't eat it two years on.

KnopkaPixie · 09/11/2024 18:07

Bubble tea.

frecklejuice · 09/11/2024 20:41

Mushrooms
Salted caramel
Dark chocolate
