Will they know I'm returning a different jumper?

I bought my brother a green jumper online from M&S, to be delivered to my local m&s food Hall. I had an email saying delivery would be delayed. This would mean it wouldn't be here in time for his birthday tomorrow so today I drove to the nearest M&S clothes store (an hour away!) And bought the same jumper in yellow (green not in stock).

I've just got home to an email saying the green jumper in now waiting to be collected! I much prefer the green jumper. If I give it to my brother and return the yellow one to the m&s food hall saying they sent the wrong colour will they know its actually one that I bought at the clothes store?

I can't return the yellow one to the food hall and I don't have time to drive all the way back the clothes store to return it (plus it seems like a massive waste of fuel!).

Many thanks if you got this far without falling asleep!

It's probably got a different barcode if it's a different colour so they'd know.

MagpiePi · 08/09/2024 15:29

I am sure there is a way to return the unwanted jumper without lying. Can you phone or message the customer services and ask?

longdistanceclaraclara · 08/09/2024 15:31

Am I missing something - why can't you just return the yellow jumper?

Toothrush · 08/09/2024 15:32

You can return to a food branch as long as its not one in a train station etc and is an actual food hall, it just takes longer to get the refund. I'd personally just take the yellow one in and the receipt etc when you pick the green one up and explain.

Yes they will know and you will look like a mug. M&S have individualised barcodes.

PuppyMonkey · 08/09/2024 15:32

What would happen if you just collect your green jumper and bring the yellow one and literally tell them you want to return the yellow one? Confused

I'd say your Christmas present to your brother is sorted.

Oh OK, thankyou. I'll just try and return it there the . It says online that I can't return it to a foodhall.

Because I ordered online to be delivered to a food hall but you can't return items bought at a clothes store to a food hall.

I wonder if they do a postal return for clothes bought in store 🤔

You don't have to return the yellow one immediately, do you, so just hang onto it until you can go to a clothing store again.

suburburban · 08/09/2024 15:39

At our food hall you can do returns in a postbox and you start an online return

Are you sure you can't do that there?

suburburban · 08/09/2024 15:40

Sorry no you have to return yellow one to store.

Yes I can see that is a pain

Copperoliverbear · 08/09/2024 15:40

If it's packaged you can return it to a food hall, pick up the green one then put the yellow one in the packaging in the car and return it and they will give you a receipt, make sure you bring sellotape.

Vanderpumpblues981 · 08/09/2024 15:40

Yeh it's a right faff, a 2 hour round trip for one jumper.

stripybobblehat · 08/09/2024 15:41

Tbf you chose to buy the yellow one so it must have been an OK choice at the time?

You didn't have to buy it though

BobbyBiscuits · 08/09/2024 15:42

Surely just return the yellow to food hall. If they reject it then use returns label. There's loads of local shops for the drop off. You don't need to pretend anything. You don't want this item anymore.

bettyjane · 08/09/2024 15:42

When I returned some pjs to M&S recently without a receipt (they were a gift and was returning for an exchange) they scanned the barcode and could see exactly when and which store they had been purchased from. Doesn’t seem worth making something up, I’d just try and return the yellow one.
