Will they know I'm returning a different jumper?

Vanderpumpblues981 · 08/09/2024 15:22

I bought my brother a green jumper online from M&S, to be delivered to my local m&s food Hall. I had an email saying delivery would be delayed. This would mean it wouldn't be here in time for his birthday tomorrow so today I drove to the nearest M&S clothes store (an hour away!) And bought the same jumper in yellow (green not in stock).

I've just got home to an email saying the green jumper in now waiting to be collected! I much prefer the green jumper. If I give it to my brother and return the yellow one to the m&s food hall saying they sent the wrong colour will they know its actually one that I bought at the clothes store?

I can't return the yellow one to the food hall and I don't have time to drive all the way back the clothes store to return it (plus it seems like a massive waste of fuel!).

Many thanks if you got this far without falling asleep!

I'm guessing you don't understand stock control?! They will be two different codes for the jumpers, if you post it back you have you won't get a refund for the incorrect jumper, the computer system won't allow it regardless of your note

happily M&S have a website that answers all her questions and has a search function for finding the nearest place she can return it to.

Yes, it's a two hour round trip away.

It’s astonishing isn’t it? All of the facts were right there in the OP, yet here we are 150-odd posts later…

And yet it does.

Clothing or homeware items bought at our main clothing and home stores can only be returned at our main clothing and home stores. Outlet items bought in our Outlet stores, can also only be returned to our outlet stores. This means that they also cannot be returned at Simply Food stores, M&S Food stores or via post.

Try looking on the returns and refunds page. I’d have posted a link but you didn’t say “please”.

How annoying that you can't return to food hall, I didn't know this. So is the returns box in food hall strictly for items collected there?

Yeah because you need to scan your returns form before you put it there

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to do a postal return under the online order, even though I'm not supposed to, will take my chance.

Just do it. They’re really not going to care. No one at M&S returns is going to sit there damning you to eternal hell because you lied about a jumper 😂

WimbyAce · 08/09/2024 18:17

Does seem pretty annoying that you have to return to a store tbh and not foodhall and can't do a postal return. Not very convenient.

Thistooshallpass24 · 08/09/2024 18:21

@FlatWhiteExtraHot it's not about whether the person doing the return cares or not .
The system will know it's different jumper & won't allow the refund

Ariela · 08/09/2024 18:25

Does your brother live nearer a main M&S shop? In that case, give him BOTH and the receipts, and say 'Wasn't sure which colour you'd like best so will leave it up to you to pick'. If he picks the yellow - fine, return the green yourself. If he picks the green, then ask if he wouldn't mind popping the yellow back to M&S and getting a refund.

Chattyon · 08/09/2024 18:28

M&S stock control is very sophisticated. The two colour jumpers will have completely different bar code numbers. You bought from a store so need to return it to a store. Don't try anything 'clever' as you will just show yourself as not very clever at all.

bitesthedust · 08/09/2024 18:31

Give both to your brother or keep one for yourself?

MsDastardley · 08/09/2024 18:44

I haven’t read the full thread, so apologies if this has already been mentioned. As well as unique barcodes, a lot of companies now video the picking and dispatch process. I ordered a diffuser and oils for my DD and had them sent direct to her. When I saw her a few weeks later she mentioned that she hadn’t tried it yet as needed to buy oils. These cost £70. I contacted the company to say they were missing. They said they had reviewed my order and an error made in picking, and sent me a replacement.

Youmwarayoum · 08/09/2024 18:48

Yes they will know. M&S have unique bar codes so they’ll see that the item you return is not from the online order and was actually bought in store.

Clafoutie · 08/09/2024 19:02

I have read the entire thread and now my brain has melted.

Why is it embarrassing? I'm not embarrassed I'm the slightest!

But do you not feel at least a little bit bad for potentially getting a completely innocent employee in trouble?

My brother used to work in a warehouse, and when mistakes like this one you’re going to lie about were made, they were recorded against the individual staff member who picked the order. Is saving yourself 2 hours really worth someone getting a rollicking from their boss? Would you think that reasonable if the member of staff was your relative or friend?

Mustreadabook · 08/09/2024 19:12

DietrichandDiMaggio · 08/09/2024 15:36

You don't have to return the yellow one immediately, do you, so just hang onto it until you can go to a clothing store again.

They are strict about the 28days to return now

HeartandSeoul · 08/09/2024 19:15

Could you sell the yellow one on eBay/Vinted/Marketplace?

Yes, you may make a small loss, but it’s done honestly, and it saves you having to drive far (assuming you can post it close to home).

Nope because as I've been told, multiple times on this thread, M&S will know the jumper was bought in store and it wasn't the pickers error. If they contact me about it I'll just say I got mixed up/confused and they'll probably just put the refund through.

I bought some shoes at m and s last year wore them, and the very next week saw my exact shoes reduced fromm£50 to £20 in the sale. I'm not ashamed to say that I purchased them and returned them on the old receipt, no one sussed or gave a flying fig. If I hadn't worn them yet I'd have been able to return as within the 35 days so who cares. But they couldn't tell it was the later shoes being returned on the earlier shoes receipt

And if they don’t? If they assume you’re telling the truth and a member of staff gets into trouble for not doing their job properly? No guilt there?

But why would she care if Marks and Spencer's think she is not very clever?

Likewhatever · 08/09/2024 19:22

Sorry, haven’t RTFT but M&S give you quite a long refund window, and you can return to any store, so could you hold onto the jumper and return it when convenient?
