Will they know I'm returning a different jumper?

Vanderpumpblues981 · 08/09/2024 15:22

I bought my brother a green jumper online from M&S, to be delivered to my local m&s food Hall. I had an email saying delivery would be delayed. This would mean it wouldn't be here in time for his birthday tomorrow so today I drove to the nearest M&S clothes store (an hour away!) And bought the same jumper in yellow (green not in stock).

I've just got home to an email saying the green jumper in now waiting to be collected! I much prefer the green jumper. If I give it to my brother and return the yellow one to the m&s food hall saying they sent the wrong colour will they know its actually one that I bought at the clothes store?

I can't return the yellow one to the food hall and I don't have time to drive all the way back the clothes store to return it (plus it seems like a massive waste of fuel!).

Many thanks if you got this far without falling asleep!

@maudelovesharold Yes, but she's doing the journey twice. There and back to buy it = two hours. There and back to return it = two hours. Two hours + two hours = four hours.

Just give him the yellow one and save yourself 2 hours. He'll never know the green one was nicer..

Actually this is the best idea, then post the other green one back, unless you have given it to him

Give over - anyway it's a 2 hour round trip not 4 hrs. The OP is only asking!

This is what it says online

My understanding of that is that items bought in the normal stores can be returned anywhere but outlet items can only be returned to an outlet.

Just tell the truth.
I ordered a green jumper. There was a delay in delivery so bought yellow instead. Green has now arrived and we much prefer the green one, so could we please return the yellow one?

This. Customer service is always good

You must have liked the yellow one to have purchased it and if you hadn’t received the email to say the green one was now delivered then you’d be giving him the yellow One.

id just stick with giving him the yellow one, don’t collect the green one and they’ll automatically refund you

2 hour drive versus brother gets 2 jumpers for his birthday...

Vanderpumpblues981 · 08/09/2024 16:49

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to do a postal return under the online order, even though I'm not supposed to, will take my chance.

Food branches just scan the package and it gets processed elsewhere

parkrun500club · 08/09/2024 16:53

Could you give him both of them?

Yes it's news to me that you can't return via a food shop as I've had a few things delivered to one, but I've never tried to return anything.

You can return to a food hall.

You can at my local M&S

Missmarplesknittingbuddy · 08/09/2024 16:57

Yes they will know that the yellow jumper you return is not the one that was sent out . If it the same as Next then as far as I am aware each item is individually barcoded , and traceable , so they will know the yellow jumper was purchased in store and they wont process your refund .

I bought a coat from next for DH as a gift, but he also bought it in the sale before his bday when I was going to give him it. I didn’t know which was which and took the sale one back with my original receipt, and they were able to tell it was the one he’d bought on his account at a reduced price. Not sure if there was a sticker barcode elsewhere, as we’d both bought online and I was returning to store, but the did know.

Each item from Next has a unique code, they can tell where and when it was bought and how it was paid for. Very handy if you've lost your receipt. Also catches people out who try and return a sale item with a full price reciept.

I understand perfectly. A 2 hour drive is fine to buy the jumper but to take it back the op thinks it’s ok to try cheating M &S into thinking they have given her the wrong jumper. Plus putting this on MN is asking ‘can I get away with committing this minor fraud?’ The answer might be ‘yes’ or ‘no’ but the realistic answer is ‘don’t ask such an embarrassing question’

This refund will not have they will return it to you as the q r code will tell them you purchased it in a store they’ll know exactly what your trying to do.RETURN TO THE STORE. Honestly the refund could well take over a month for them to refund it. I worked for them and the amount of times people came to store weeks after they returned them via the post they were still waiting for a.refund.

I would contact them and check the process for posting a return as you may be able to post it direct to a store rather than the warehouse which may only deal with online returns. I’m sure it will be possible but best to check or you are risking your refund.

Birstall Leeds, food hall downstairs, cafe and home upstairs. You can only return things bought there, so no clothes etc. or online orders.

it changed about a year ago or more, hasn’t always been that way. It’s a nuisance.

Genevieva · 08/09/2024 17:02

You don’t have to lie. Just return the one you don’t want.

You can return M&S clothing to any M&S store. The nearest one will do just nicely. There is no need to lie to avoid driving 2 hours back to the store it came from. Does that clarify things?
