Will they know I'm returning a different jumper?

I bought my brother a green jumper online from M&S, to be delivered to my local m&s food Hall. I had an email saying delivery would be delayed. This would mean it wouldn't be here in time for his birthday tomorrow so today I drove to the nearest M&S clothes store (an hour away!) And bought the same jumper in yellow (green not in stock).

I've just got home to an email saying the green jumper in now waiting to be collected! I much prefer the green jumper. If I give it to my brother and return the yellow one to the m&s food hall saying they sent the wrong colour will they know its actually one that I bought at the clothes store?

I can't return the yellow one to the food hall and I don't have time to drive all the way back the clothes store to return it (plus it seems like a massive waste of fuel!).

Many thanks if you got this far without falling asleep!

I have read the entire thread and now my brain has melted.

Basically

OP ordered a green jumper online

M&S said order delayed

She drove an hour to the store and got a yellow one

Green one arrived, she prefers the green

She wants to return yellow one via post and pretend the it was sent out instead of the green one to get a refund so she doesn't have to drive back to the shop

People said you can't do this and highlighted where it says so on M&S site.

OP agreed she can't do this but is going to do it anyway.

So all in all, bit pointless starting the thread!

Yeh it's a right faff, a 2 hour round trip for one jumper.

Can you make it into a nice trip out? Have lunch, shopping etc?

Beautiful3 · 08/09/2024 19:34

Could you gift it to him for Christmas?! That's probably what I'd do!

DontCallMeKidDontCallMeBaby · 08/09/2024 19:19

And if they don’t? If they assume you’re telling the truth and a member of staff gets into trouble for not doing their job properly? No guilt there?

This is ridiculous it's a fucking jumper in a different colour. No one will give a shit!! Why are you trying to make me feel guilty over absolutely nothing, no one's getting a rollicking over it! You think they're going to launch an investigation into it, you're talking bollocks.

I'm guessing you don't understand stock control?! They will be two different codes for the jumpers, if you post it back you have you won't get a refund for the incorrect jumper, the computer system won't allow it regardless of your note

Why is that a ?!

Lots of people won't understand stock control. Why would they?

stripybobblehat · 08/09/2024 19:36

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 08/09/2024 18:10

Just do it. They’re really not going to care. No one at M&S returns is going to sit there damning you to eternal hell because you lied about a jumper 😂

It's more she won't get her money back but yeah like you say m&s won't care about that either

waltzingparrot · 08/09/2024 19:37

I'd tick the 'wrong item/colour sent' box.

Ariela · 08/09/2024 18:25

Does your brother live nearer a main M&S shop? In that case, give him BOTH and the receipts, and say 'Wasn't sure which colour you'd like best so will leave it up to you to pick'. If he picks the yellow - fine, return the green yourself. If he picks the green, then ask if he wouldn't mind popping the yellow back to M&S and getting a refund.

Oooooh clever!!

Vanderpumpblues981 · 08/09/2024 19:37

LamasPyjama · 08/09/2024 19:19

But why would she care if Marks and Spencer's think she is not very clever?

Exactly, I don't care!! No one knows who I am and what's wrong with being not very clever, I seriously could not care less.

Nope because as I've been told, multiple times on this thread, M&S will know the jumper was bought in store and it wasn't the pickers error. If they contact me about it I'll just say I got mixed up/confused and they'll probably just put the refund through.

They'll probably think you nicked it and not refund you

I'm off now. Bored of the jumper chat but thanks for all the replies.

What was the purpose of the post if you've said what you want to do, people have told you you can't, you've agreed you can't then said you're going to do it anyway and now you're just getting annoyed at people because they are pointing out why you shouldn't do it.

The answer to your question is yes they will know. What you do with that information is up to you.

YellowphantGrey · 08/09/2024 19:41

4 hours this thread has been going back and forth for. You could have returned the jumper twice in that time.

Thistooshallpass24 · 08/09/2024 19:43

@stripybobblehat most companies don't control stock on guessing, surely that's obvious.
The op has already flounced as she doesn't care blah blah blah.
I can't say that I care , but I was pointing out yes M&S will know.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 08/09/2024 19:43

Crikey, I'd hate people to think I wasn't very clever, but then I'd also hate people to think I was so bloody entitled that clearly stated rules don't apply to me.

Modern life, I suppose. It's ok to be a thickie and folk do whatever they like and expect the world to bend to their needs.

But not to the foodhall

Sorry, haven’t RTFT but M&S give you quite a long refund window, and you can return to any store, so could you hold onto the jumper and return it when convenient?

Thank goodness you've come along, no o e had mentioned that, oh hang on .... 😂

Not on a Sunday unless she's in Scotland 😁

My brother literally was. It was viewed as costing the company money, which was big deal to them (and a disgruntled customer was far more important to them than a disposable employee). He was dragged into the office, to explain his carelessness. It was only when during investigation, another member of staff acknowledged they’d help pack the order that they acknowledged it was customer fraud. He was going to disaplinary.

gamerchick · 08/09/2024 20:36

Give him both. Don't lie, they'll know.

Well what were you expecting Mumsnet to say about it...? You know how this place works. When I need validation for something when I know I'm already skating on thin ice, I'm quite choosy who I mention it to, and it's never Mumsnet.

Indeed. And it seems a bit petulant of the OP to complain they are now bored of the chat, having started it! Chats don’t always give the desired answer but better just to admit that than flounce off 😆

But no one would think that because no one knows who you are. The computer at M&S returns isn’t going to think “ooh PigglyWiggly is a right dumbarse” and mark your card for all eternity 😂.

The people who book returns back in aren’t paid enough to give a shit, and don’t even see the reasons why it’s come back.

But why can't you just be content with your own knowledge that you aren't 'a thickie'? If you aren't a thickie.

Why does it matter to you that a large multinational corporation thinks you aren't very clever?
