Will they know I'm returning a different jumper?

Vanderpumpblues981 · 08/09/2024 15:22

I bought my brother a green jumper online from M&S, to be delivered to my local m&s food Hall. I had an email saying delivery would be delayed. This would mean it wouldn't be here in time for his birthday tomorrow so today I drove to the nearest M&S clothes store (an hour away!) And bought the same jumper in yellow (green not in stock).

I've just got home to an email saying the green jumper in now waiting to be collected! I much prefer the green jumper. If I give it to my brother and return the yellow one to the m&s food hall saying they sent the wrong colour will they know its actually one that I bought at the clothes store?

I can't return the yellow one to the food hall and I don't have time to drive all the way back the clothes store to return it (plus it seems like a massive waste of fuel!).

Many thanks if you got this far without falling asleep!

I.was once sent something different to what I ordered and they had to take my word for it, they did refund but I could have been fibbing!

If you don't have a track record of doing this I reckon you'd get away with it

I understand perfectly. A 2 hour drive is fine to buy the jumper but to take it back the op thinks it’s ok to try cheating M &S into thinking they have given her the wrong jumper. Plus putting this on MN is asking ‘can I get away with committing this minor fraud?’ The answer might be ‘yes’ or ‘no’ but the realistic answer is ‘don’t ask such an embarrassing question’

Why is it embarrassing? I'm not embarrassed I'm the slightest!

Op's nearest M&M clothes store is the one she bought it from!

If items are as trackable as posters think then putting the yellow one in the bag wouldn't work would it?

What a shame you couldn't have just waited for the green one to turn up even if it meant that brother wouldn't have got it on his bday.

LamasPyjama · 08/09/2024 17:19

You can return M&S clothing to any M&S store. The nearest one will do just nicely. There is no need to lie to avoid driving 2 hours back to the store it came from. Does that clarify things?

No, it doesn't clarify anything because it's still a two hour round trip.

Some of those roadside petrol station places are not M&S. they just sell M&S food, but if she’s near one of those, she will be closer than 2 hours from the nearest shop. They also have very generous return policies. It used to be indefinitely. I had a student job in M&S about 20 years ago and we got people trying it on with old St Michael’s and St Margaret’s school uniforms, but the till would have up to date records, so I could say ‘this was bought in 1976 and now has a return value of 20p’. They had to get rid of that in the end, but it was reduced to about 3 months. I think it’s about a month now. And it’s got way more complicated with online shopping, sale outlet shops etc, but happily M&S have a website that answers all her questions and has a search function for finding the nearest place she can return it to.

Assuming you're brother is an adult why couldn't you tell him there was a delay in posting it out?

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 08/09/2024 17:26

A two hour round trip is only an hour each way. Just take it back within the month. Jesus. What a bloody kerfuffle.

Carrotsandgrapes · 08/09/2024 17:26

They'll be able to scan the green jumper when you return it. That will tell them:
a) that's not the jumper they scanned and packaged up to you
b) that this jumper was actually purchased in X store

And you won't get your refund. You have quite a generous returns time at M&S (35 days I think). So plenty of time to return.

You don't have to return the yellow one immediately, do you, so just hang onto it until you can go to a clothing store again.

This.

Toothrush · 08/09/2024 15:32

You can return to a food branch as long as its not one in a train station etc and is an actual food hall, it just takes longer to get the refund. I'd personally just take the yellow one in and the receipt etc when you pick the green one up and explain.

You can only return online orders of clothing to a food hall. You can't return clothes bought in a store to food halls.

OP try their customer service live chat and see what they say, if not them you will need to drive to store to return it or ask someone else if they are going that way before you are to do it

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/09/2024 17:33

You cannot return non food items to food only stores. Food stores try and return clothing to the nearest depot but the food and clothing depots are totally separate.
How do I know? DH works in one of their food depots.

Absolutely correct OP take it back to a clothing store and get a refund Don’t return by post you’ll not receive any sort of refund for a store purchase

stripybobblehat · 08/09/2024 17:36

I don't get it. Why did you buy the yellow one if you then wanted to return it if you saw the green one? Once you had the yellow one it was job done surely?

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 08/09/2024 17:40

Vanderpumpblues981 · 08/09/2024 15:36

I wonder if they do a postal return for clothes bought in store 🤔

.

WimbyAce · 08/09/2024 17:41

How annoying that you can't return to food hall, I didn't know this. So is the returns box in food hall strictly for items collected there?

xyz111 · 08/09/2024 17:45

The yellow and green jumpers will have different products code on it. So you'll have to return the yellow one to the store you purchased it from. Or as others have said, keep it and give it to him for Xmas.

LamasPyjama · 08/09/2024 17:45

My food marks and Spencer's returns online orders . You pack it up and they scan it and it gets processed elsewhere

I'd say your Christmas present to your brother is sorted.

This🤣

dottiedodah · 08/09/2024 17:47

If you return the yellow one without a receipt ,to your closest store, and within the time frame, they will issue a credit note .This can be used for food items .Therefore as good as cash really.

Yes. All of the M&S food stores that do online order pickup also do online order returns. They do not do returns for clothing purchased at a main M&S, which is what OP wants to do.

Tbf, an M&Ms jumper would be more tasty🤣

Her closest store is the one that she purchased it from, an hour away.

If she takes the yellow jumper back there - or any M&S clothing store - she can have a refund. Why would she want a credit note?
