Will they know I'm returning a different jumper?

I bought my brother a green jumper online from M&S, to be delivered to my local m&s food Hall. I had an email saying delivery would be delayed. This would mean it wouldn't be here in time for his birthday tomorrow so today I drove to the nearest M&S clothes store (an hour away!) And bought the same jumper in yellow (green not in stock).

I've just got home to an email saying the green jumper in now waiting to be collected! I much prefer the green jumper. If I give it to my brother and return the yellow one to the m&s food hall saying they sent the wrong colour will they know its actually one that I bought at the clothes store?

I can't return the yellow one to the food hall and I don't have time to drive all the way back the clothes store to return it (plus it seems like a massive waste of fuel!).

Many thanks if you got this far without falling asleep!

Can't you return the yellow one by post?
Take it along with the packaging and ask, in case they've changed their policy
Easier than a long journey surely.

Normallynumb · 09/09/2024 13:57

Ah I see you bought it in store
Plan a day out during the next month to the town?
Keep yellow one as someone's Christmas present

Supershiny · 09/09/2024 18:29

Yeah, I work in M&S and it won’t work. Just take the yellow one back, you don’t need a receipt but they will give you a gift card that can be used anywhere in store. Did you use your Sparks card as the receipt will be stored on there?

I don't think the lack of receipt is an issue here, its the 2 hour round trip to the store

Yes sorry, I realised after posting but couldn’t edit or delete 😊

Oh OK, thankyou. I'll just try and return it there the . It says online that I can't return it to a foodhall.

I think you are right and they changed as I'm sure I couldn't return an item purchased in a store to a food halk
But their customer service can be v good so I'd facebook message and explain and say you can't get to a store..they might then do a royal mail label for you? Worth a try.

Mumoftwoandcats · 09/09/2024 19:23

Yes they’ll know, but I’m sure if you’ve the receipt for the yellow one, you’ll be able to return it to any branch of M&S .

Unless it's a foodhall

Ah ok… I would have thought if the green one cm be returned there the yellow one could be as well. I’d just give M&S a call then, it could maybe be posted back

Madrigal12 · 09/09/2024 20:41

They will have different stock numbers, so the codes will be scanned when you take it back - M&S are good with returns, so why make a fraud of yourself?

Nanof8 · 10/09/2024 01:18

Why didn't you just tell your brother his present was in the mail?

I would take the yellow jumper and receipt along with you when you collect the green one and tell them the truth. I am sure they will sort it out.

I have returned clothes to our food hall when i've bought items online - it's easy as you go into your orders and click return next to the item etc. Not sure what the situation is when you buy instore however M&S customer service is usually good.

Online orders can be returned to food halls, in store purchased clothes cannot be returned this way.

That's because they can accept online orders returns into a foodhall, they can't accept clothes bought from shop at a food hall because it needs to go back to the shop and they can't get it there. Online clothes orders don't always come from the nearest shop, which is why you pick where you want to collect it from.

It states clearly all over the website where returns need to go. The OP knows this, asked whether the could ignore this acknowledged she couldn't then got annoyed at everyone because she is going to return the yellow one by pretending she received the wrong online order

Vanderpumpblues981 · 10/09/2024 19:39

Just thought id update for anyone interested. I returned the green jumper via evri (which the website said isn't allowed for store bought items) ticked wrong colour and I've just had an email to say the return is being processed and money will take up to 3 working days. All sorted.

In short yes, they can tell its a different item, its on the code in the garment, Iwork in clothing retail, this sunt happens often, and then the customer hates it when they don't get a refund

The replies on this thread made it sound like a palaver but in real life it was very straightforward.
