What’s the point of working…

all year to save up enough money for a well earned camping in the uk holiday when your 15yr car breaks down 200 miles from home and you have to put a tent up in the rain, cancel activities that cost up to £600 and go in to debt because the car needs fixing.

It’s fucking shit

We had to put the tent up at 1am. With 2 kids. We’re stuck here until the car is fixed. But likely have nowhere to stay from Saturday as it’s bank holiday.

My kids are gutted. They’ve been looking forward to their activity for months!

OP posts:
Pineappleprep · 22/08/2024 13:02

That's shit, any chance of getting refunds on any of the activities? Even one is better than nothing

WickieRoy · 22/08/2024 13:20

That's so shit, I'm so sorry. Flowers

Hope you get sorted soon. Breakdowns are awful.

MissingMoominMamma · 22/08/2024 13:21

Whereabouts are you?

Coconutter24 · 22/08/2024 13:53

Instead of asking yourself what’s the point in working, ask yourself what you’d have to look forward to if you didn’t work? The struggle of bills, no option of the holiday you’d planned. Yeh it’s shit it didn’t work out but you could be in a lot worse situation

I tried, but it’s beyond the 48hr cut off so no luck. I even pleaded with a sob story.

I’ll think like that in a few days time when my car is fixed and I’m comfortably at home… but for now please just let me have my moan.

OP posts:
TheCompactPussycat · 22/08/2024 14:50

Is there any chance you have travel insurance which would pay out for the activities? Perhaps with your bank account?

This is the exact reason that annual travel insurance is a good idea.

Do you get a buzz from kicking someone when they're down, @Coconutter24 ?

Really bad form. The op has had some rotten luck.

Did you not read my original comment I was trying to help by seeing a different perspective! Which OP didn’t obviously want to read

I did see it, it lacked empathy.

The op was very polite to you, you were rude in return.

oObyeOo · 22/08/2024 18:56

Thanks everyone. I know my moaning will not solve anything. Feeling a bit more positive now. Been for a lovely walk with the dogs and kids, found a nice cafe for lunch. The rain’s stopped and now playing cards at the campsite 😊
RAC came out again this afternoon and we should have a mobile mechanic visit in the morning.
I’ve added £600 to my cc for repairs, I might just add a few more to salvage/extend to hols then claw it back in the autumn months.

Great that the rain has stopped! I suppose it’s inevitable with a camping holiday, hopefully it’s been got out of the way now.

I’m supposed to be on holiday atm too but I’ve caught a horrible (embarrassing) virus and it’s pushed back all the work I need to do first. Sad

SparklyJadeFawn · 22/08/2024 19:14

Im not sure i read it right.

Your car broke down so you didnt make it to the proper campsite?
I
s that right?
Why didn't you take a bus and then taxi to the campsite?

Bjorkdidit · 22/08/2024 19:23

Probably because they had a car full of camping gear and a taxi could have cost another hundreds of pounds the OP doesn't have? Plus it was the middle of the night and unless you're in central London, what's a bus?

I suppose they should have just used their other car to go to one of their other houses or something too?

Sounds like you made it to the campsite in the end OP, hope you have a lovely holiday and the car doesn't cost too much to fix. Been there with cars that just break down endlessly, it's horrible.

Buses are everywhere.

I stayed in a nice caravan park in a very remote location in Suffolk last year.

Buses went right to the entrance of the caravan park

Just1234 · 22/08/2024 19:43

I'm so sorry OP that's rubbish . I really hope things look up soon.

@SparklyJadeFawn busses are absolutely not everywhere and I'm pretty sure it would be impossible to load an entire cars worth of camping equipment onto one anyway! Last time we went camping our car was like a game of Tetris

BumpyaDaisyevna · 22/08/2024 19:50

Sorry to hear OP. That's rubbish.

I would accumulate a small amount of debt to have something of a good time at least and try to recoup later.

One day when your kids are older you'll all have a laugh about that awful holiday you went on ...

And as they say, a change is as good as a rest? Possibly....

Busses are not everywhere! Not a single bus goes through my home village.
