all year to save up enough money for a well earned camping in the uk holiday when your 15yr car breaks down 200 miles from home and you have to put a tent up in the rain, cancel activities that cost up to £600 and go in to debt because the car needs fixing.

It’s fucking shit

Busses are not everywhere! Not a single bus goes through my home village.

Really? Why is that?

I was going around Norfolk a couple of weeks ago.

I went through the tiniest little places. They weren't even villages. You could describe them as three houses and a field.

The bus around Norfolk went absolutely everywhere, through every small village

Did you go around Norfolk on a bus? If so, did it occur to you that you didn’t see the villages the bus didn’t go through?

I went around Norfolk on a bus this time.

I've also lived in Norfolk for years at a time before this, and I believe that I've gotten a bus to every village and town in Norfolk. The bus routes go absolutely everywhere.

Arraminta · 22/08/2024 20:35

God that sounds like a nightmare, you poor soul. As per the money, just try and reframe it. If you go home now without spending another penny you will have definitely wasted those hundreds of pounds. But if you're prepared to spend that little bit extra then you won't have wasted hundreds.

Stop being a twat

Gosh, OP should've gone on holiday to bus-nirvana-Norfolk! I have lived in lots of places that don't have a bus service.

OP I hope you are able to salvage some joy from your holiday. Sometimes life just goes to shit.

Bus nirvana norfolk lol.

I've also stayed in beautiful campsites in Suffolk. Buses go round to the main entrance of every campsite.

Which led to my question of , why didn't op just get a bus, instead of letting 600 pounds go to waste. I would

CitronellaDeVille · 22/08/2024 20:55

Aaaaaargh for you OP!
Fingers crossed that things keep improving.

Norfolk AND Suffolk? Quite the globetrotter!

Certainly proves that every campsite known to man has a bus service right to the site entrance.

I am quite the globetrotter actually.

Travel is one of my priorities.

I've been to many different countries.

My aim last year was to see more of the UK that I haven't seen

I found the buses were great to get everywhere.

That I was so surprised that Op let her 600 pounds activities go to waste

Kendodd · 22/08/2024 21:06

It sounds shit OP
Hopefully this thread will give you a bit of a laugh though.
FYI I live in a village with a shop, pub, school and everything, no bus though :(

SparklyJadeFawn · 22/08/2024 21:11

Get the bus/ train or taxi.

Loads of options if your car breaks down.

My car has broken down before.

TeenagersAngst · 22/08/2024 21:13

Jesus, people on Mumsnet are getting weirder by the day. Can no one just do what is expected on a thread like this and show the OP some empathy.

It doesn't matter what you would have done in the same situation or how many buses you've taken round Suffolk and Norfolk. That is not the point.

Notmybill · 22/08/2024 21:13

TheCompactPussycat · 22/08/2024 14:50

Is there any chance you have travel insurance which would pay out for the activities? Perhaps with your bank account?

This is the exact reason that annual travel insurance is a good idea.

Most policies don't cover holidays in the UK.

Not with young children, a tent, endless bags of clothes and camping equipment. It's just not the obvious thing to do. Are you dim or a troll?

FlamingoFloss · 22/08/2024 21:15

Hope you can salvage your holiday. Feel for you op x

Drachuughtty · 22/08/2024 21:15

OP it sounds horrid and so disappointing. If it's any consolation my hol got cancelled last year due to a sudden d and v just before travel. I felt absolutely devastated. I did get over it and you will too.

Bjorkdidit · 22/08/2024 21:17

I suppose people just buy cars for fun. I mean, why would you when you could just get the bus everywhere at any time you want to and in a sensible amount of time. That's what you're doing wrong OP, you should have gone camping on the bus.

What are you even on about. Of course you can fit a tent on a bus. Tents come in very small rolled up sizes these days.

I was on a bus that went to a camping site before. There were many families on the bus, they all managed to fit their tents and bags on the bus

So you think she was right to lose 600 pounds of activities that she paid for? It seems a bit ridiculous to me

AtomicBlondeRose · 22/08/2024 21:20

But OP could have broken down 100 miles from the campsite - getting kids and camping equipment on a bus isn’t exactly easy and assuming there’s a random magic bus that goes from where she broke down to somewhere even near the intended destination is bizarre! I live in a tourist area with lots of campsites and caravan parks and a LOT of them are in places far from any bus service at all. And there’s precious few taxis either. It’s not even especially remote, just a large rural county.

Massive Tory cuts to public transport, leaving many stranded.

Hardly a secret. I live bang in the centre of London and keep up to date on it, because it's important and people who don't live where I do also need and deserve affordable, sustainable transport systems.

HollyFern1110 · 22/08/2024 21:23

Do the people suggesting OP should have got on a (possibly non-existent) bus with kids, dogs & all her camping gear actually go camping?

I can barely lift our tent on my own never mind the rest!

Coconutter24 · 22/08/2024 21:25

bergamotorange · 22/08/2024 15:30

I did see it, it lacked empathy.

The op was very polite to you, you were rude in return.

Maybe it did lack empathy but I was trying to sympathise.

ChemicalA03959X · 22/08/2024 21:25

Covid proved society does not need the majority of different industries, for the survival of the human civilisation but then because of the population levels etc what do you do with the rest of society , ego capitalism as one example
