all year to save up enough money for a well earned camping in the uk holiday when your 15yr car breaks down 200 miles from home and you have to put a tent up in the rain, cancel activities that cost up to £600 and go in to debt because the car needs fixing.

It’s fucking shit

I’m not sure what pithy means, but my comment was meant to be helpful obviously OP didn’t want to look at it like that however like she said in a few days she may see it like that

Glitterglitch · 22/08/2024 21:28

The OP has a legitimate moan & certain posters are berating her for not getting a bus because buses go everywhere. This is why MNs gets a bad press, wtf?!

LoobyDoop2 · 22/08/2024 20:34

Did you go around Norfolk on a bus? If so, did it occur to you that you didn’t see the villages the bus didn’t go through?

This has really given me the giggles for some reason, cheers!

Exactly it's ludicrous. I feel so sorry for op and her children.

Glitterglitch · 22/08/2024 21:31

Do the people suggesting OP should have got on a (possibly non-existent) bus with kids, dogs & all her camping gear actually go camping?

They just fold up their gear, dog & dc & get on the bus that comes every 15 mins & stops frequently all over the UK. Eejits 🤣🤣🤣

PaminaMozart · 22/08/2024 21:31

SparklyJadeFawn · 22/08/2024 21:18

What are you even on about. Of course you can fit a tent on a bus. Tents come in very small rolled up sizes these days.

I was on a bus that went to a camping site before. There were many families on the bus, they all managed to fit their tents and bags on the bus

Okay, we get it - you are one of those twats annoying people who could argue in an empty room.....

I can barely lift our tent on my own never mind the rest!

Well, according to @SparklyJadeFawn most tents fit in your pocket these days. Mine was fucking massive so I must have been doing camping all wrong.

Glitterglitch · 22/08/2024 21:32

@TeenagersAngst my tent goes in one pocket, sleeping bags in the other so I’m still hands free.

@Coconutter24 you can highlight a word and click 'look up' do get the definition if you’re viewing Mumsnet via phone/iPad.

blackpear · 22/08/2024 21:34

That is massively shit, OP. I’m so sorry. You are fully entitled to a full vent and moan. I’d be so, so pissed off.

oatmilk4breakfast · 22/08/2024 21:35

I don’t understand why can you not get to activity? Is it because you’re too far away or that you reached your intended destination but now can’t drive around to get to activities?

Thanks I didn’t know you could do that. I looked up the word and my comment was certainly not ‘pithy’

oatmilk4breakfast · 22/08/2024 21:41

Just to be clear I sympathise massively and those saying ‘get the bus’ I mean…wtf? But was just wondering about logistics as you did say the tent was up so I wondered how close you got and whether there were some other options we could think of

Why on earth wouldn't you go on a bus?

I'm starting to wonder what kind of people are on here.

Buses are such a normal thing to take.

This reminds me of a show I watched once it was called "Rich kids go skint" and the posh kid says "Eh I think I've gone on a bus once".

And they made fun of him as it was so ridiculous.

I'm really starting to wonder what kind of people are on here who seem shocked, horrified even at the thought of taking a bus

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 22/08/2024 21:45

@oObyeOo that's totally shit. I actually think I'd cry.

And yes sure some holiday sites are totally reachable by public transport. And some tents pack up small enough to take on a bus. But if you're planning a holiday with a car, chances are you've booked a campsite that isn't accessible without one. And possibly have a tent that doesn't fold up that small. @SparklyJadeFawn have you tried travelling around Cornwall on a bus? I can assure you there are loads of places that aren't easily accessed by bus.

oakleaffy · 22/08/2024 21:46

SparklyJadeFawn · 22/08/2024 19:30

Buses are everywhere.

I stayed in a nice caravan park in a very remote location in Suffolk last year.

Buses went right to the entrance of the caravan park

Buses bloody aren't ''everywhere''...I was in a major city the other day and there was sod all buses that went where I needed to go- ditto some Americans.
They ended up wheeling their luggage for a couple of miles to the Coach station to get to London.
Wales....regular buses... LOL.

Stringagal · 22/08/2024 21:46

Where are you supposed to be, OP?

Glitterglitch · 22/08/2024 21:50

Why on earth wouldn't you go on a bus?

Because the OP went in a car… If you go to a campsite it’s quite normal to see 1 or 2 cars.

Glitterglitch · 22/08/2024 21:51

I'm really starting to wonder what kind of people are on here who seem shocked, horrified even at the thought of taking a bus

How on earth is this your take away from reading the OP & the thread?! 😆😆😆

socks1107 · 22/08/2024 21:53

That's rubbish. And yes I'd think what was the point and did once on a camping holiday in the rain, without the added stress of a broken car.
Hope it improves

You’re thinking of city buses maybe. I’m assuming OPs tent is like ours - one that an entire family could spend a couple of weeks in, it’s huge. Our car is full to the absolute brim when we to do our annual camping trip. Decamping that I’m a jiffy overnight and getting a rural bus…it’s nothing to do with snobbery and everything to do with practicalities. I take buses everywhere. I couldn’t physically take one to the camping trip I’ve just come back from. You’ve have to pack ultralight everything and prep completely differently and I 💯 understand why this wasn’t possible for OP to just ditch the car and get the bus instead.

Wafflefudge · 22/08/2024 21:54

@SparklyJadeFawn people aren't horrified at the idea of using a busy. They are confused that you can't understand the problem if you say we're on a motorway near Manchesyer and broke down on your way to a campsite in say the Highlands. There isn't magically a bus going from the breakdown site to the campsite.

I'm not shocked or horrified at going on a bus. I've been on 2 today. But I've also made 3 car journeys that took a total of just over 4 hours (I've been on a day out visiting a NT place and a historical city).

Journey 1: 1 hour 40 mins in a car or 3 hours on a bus, a train and another bus.
Journey 2: 45 mins in a car or 2 hours on a bus then a train
Journey 3: 1 hour 30 mins or 2.5 hours on a bus, a train and another bus.

So that's twice as long if all the buses and trains turned up and fuck knows how much it would have cost. And that was just me. Imagine if it was a family of 4 I was paying to put on three trains and 5 buses? That would probably make the OPs £600 car repair bill look like pocket change.

AtomicBlondeRose · 22/08/2024 21:56

There’s a camp site 2.5 miles away from here. I live in a busy market town, and I’ve just checked how I’d be able to get a bus there. The next bus is at 9.30am…on Tuesday!

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 22/08/2024 22:00

The nearest bus stop to the last campsite i stayed on is a 45 min walk. That's assuming you broke down anywhere near a bus route that could connect you to that bus. And that they were running at the right time. And the campsite is uphill. No way i could carry all our gear up hill for 45 mins and look after young DC.
