What’s the point of working…

all year to save up enough money for a well earned camping in the uk holiday when your 15yr car breaks down 200 miles from home and you have to put a tent up in the rain, cancel activities that cost up to £600 and go in to debt because the car needs fixing.

It’s fucking shit

It’s not just the tent on a bus though is it. It’s sleeping bags, air beds, pumps, suitcase with all the clothes in, food, cool box, camping stove, boxes full of plates/cups/cutlery, blankets. You can’t cart all the camping gear on a bus in the middle of the night 😂

Judellie · 22/08/2024 22:04

There have been loads of programmes about how various parts of the UK aren't served at all by buses any more @SparklyJadeFawn

lottiegarbanzo · 22/08/2024 22:06

Well you have sparked one of the maddest threads on Mumsnet Grin Perhaps some sort of consolation? BrewFlowers

AtomicBlondeRose · 22/08/2024 22:11

To be fair, here’s a photo of my DH and friend waiting for the 417 to Chipping Sodbury after climbing Everest. Gets a little crowded but it’s very handy for Tesco.

Thats funny.

Because I've actually climbed to base camp of Mount Everest too.

Great times!

AtomicBlondeRose · 22/08/2024 22:14

Which bus did you get?

SparklyJadeFawn · 22/08/2024 22:16

AtomicBlondeRose · 22/08/2024 22:14

Which bus did you get?

I'm not sure how getting a bus round england has anything at all to do with Nepal.

But I'm not one who made that extremely strange turn

SparklyJadeFawn · 22/08/2024 20:47

Bus nirvana norfolk lol.

I've also stayed in beautiful campsites in Suffolk. Buses go round to the main entrance of every campsite.

Which led to my question of , why didn't op just get a bus, instead of letting 600 pounds go to waste. I would

There were buses. Not many though. But the RAC wouldn’t have come out to an empty car.

Plus where would we have gone? We wouldn’t have been able to take the tent and sleeping kit on the bus. It was more sensible to stay in the car, that way they could either fix roadside or tow. We have advanced cover so no extra cost to tow.

Did you get the car sorted in the end?

Plus even if we did manage to get the bus we’d still not be able to do the activity as it wasn’t near the campsite and involved
our bikes which wouldn’t have been able to go on the bus.

It sounds shit OP
Hopefully this thread will give you a bit of a laugh though.
FYI I live in a village with a shop, pub, school and everything, no bus though :(

I do too. They scrapped the bus service about 4 years ago.

Have some of you never heard of people posting for a vent. It's not the time to say why didn't you do x, y or z. Just let them get it out of their system and they can then think about what comes next. I seriously think there is someone in mumsnet towers doing this deliberately to keep people posting! Surely people aren't this obtuse otherwise

WhiteBedding · 22/08/2024 22:20

I hope the absolute randomness of responses on your thread has cheered you up at least OP. I've certainly had a good giggle and a couple of eye rolls. There's nowt so queer as folk as they say!

oObyeOo · 22/08/2024 22:21

SparklyJadeFawn · 22/08/2024 21:18

What are you even on about. Of course you can fit a tent on a bus. Tents come in very small rolled up sizes these days.

I was on a bus that went to a camping site before. There were many families on the bus, they all managed to fit their tents and bags on the bus

Mine’s an outwell tent with 3 separate bags. It’s 20yrs old.

@oObyeOo - 99% of posters here realise you couldn’t have got a bus and exactly why so don’t waste time trying to justify your perfectly reasonable actions and annoyance!

Again I don't see anything queer at all about saying why not take the bus if you have to get somewhere.

OP has said there were buses running, but clarified that she had bikes with her aswell that she couldn't get on the bus.

Maybe let her react how she wants?

Glitterglitch · 22/08/2024 21:32

@TeenagersAngst my tent goes in one pocket, sleeping bags in the other so I’m still hands free.

I’m hearing this sung to the tune of Alanis Morrisette.

Glitterglitch · 22/08/2024 22:25

@AtomicBlondeRose 😆😆

I hate the 417, always so packed!

oObyeOo · 22/08/2024 22:25

oatmilk4breakfast · 22/08/2024 21:35

I don’t understand why can you not get to activity? Is it because you’re too far away or that you reached your intended destination but now can’t drive around to get to activities?

Yeah. It involves using bikes. It’s a bike park with uplifts that you pay for. We are staying approx 20 miles away and intended to drive to destination each day… only half an hour.

As it is, it’s really difficult to find public transport in a rural area that will accommodate 4 bikes. My 10yr old wasn’t up for riding there. Which is fair enough.

OP posts:
Glitterglitch · 22/08/2024 22:26

@FlannelShirt 🤣🤣

Glitterglitch · 22/08/2024 22:28

But the RAC wouldn’t have come out to an empty car.

You could have left a note saying you got the bus.

will accommodate 4 bikes

Why on earth do you have bikes? Don’t you know there are buses!!

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Delphiniumandlupins · 22/08/2024 22:30

We had a car breakdown in S Wales once, heading to a caravan holiday with 3 DC and 2 dogs! Three days courtesy car was included with breakdown service but it was Good Friday and no garage open to even look at the car until Tuesday. When your holiday starts like that things can only improve.

Have you lost the money on activities because you're not at your intended destination?

Glitterglitch · 22/08/2024 22:31

Again I don't see anything queer at all about saying why not take the bus if you have to get somewhere.

Thats not what you said though…
