all year to save up enough money for a well earned camping in the uk holiday when your 15yr car breaks down 200 miles from home and you have to put a tent up in the rain, cancel activities that cost up to £600 and go in to debt because the car needs fixing.

It’s fucking shit

@Namechangedforthis25 and it's not hard. You can manage it.

OP sorry about that - I came to commiserate and got a little sidetracked.
I really hope your car gets fixed tomorrow and that you all have a great holiday!

Very strange person

Buses are everywhere.

I stayed in a nice caravan park in a very remote location in Suffolk last year.

Buses went right to the entrance of the caravan park

At midnight?

I'm not sure if you're able to read. But op said her car stopped in a bus lay-by, and that there were buses available for her to take.

Go back and try to read.

You can do it!

Camping by public transport when planned to do it that way, and deliberately taking the minimum/hiking tent- sure (I guess...)

Camping as a family, when you've got a packed car, then taking it all on the bus - wtf!

We are about to go camping, we have:

  • a 25kg air tent (along with pump)
  • gazebo
  • camping kitchen
  • table
  • 4 chairs
  • electric cool box
  • inflatable mattresses/SIMs for 4 people
  • 4 people's worth of clothes

That's before the kitchen equipment, lights, toys, bbq, sleeping bags, blankets etc.

It will fit in our (large) car, with the aid of a roofbox.

No we couldn't carry it on to a bus 😂😂😂

Och, just ignore sparklyjadefawn; teenage DS is autistic and there's something very familiar about that "X then Y in all circumstances" logic that poster is using. DS himself isn't that rude, but some of his ND buddies are, completely unintentionally I'm sure. Best not to point out the holes in their worldview as they just get upset.

OP, I hope you can rescue some fun from your holiday, even if it doesn't end up looking like what you planned 🤞

SparklyJadeFawn · 22/08/2024 21:11

Get the bus/ train or taxi.

Loads of options if your car breaks down.

My car has broken down before.

With 2 kids, and all the crap you need when camping?

I think you may have stayed in caravans, not proper camping.

We used to camp and the car would be chocka, kids would be sitting on duvets etc

SparklyJadeFawn · 22/08/2024 22:43

I've been to base camp everest. I'm sure you haven't.

it’s not that special going to base camps. It’s a popular tourist attraction which isn’t that hard.

When was the last time that you applied for a better paid job? Or considered how to make a career change?

I’m a teacher. I’m 40 and can’t afford to retrain.

Have you fucking read the thread?

OP said that there were buses there to take!!

But you suggested it before I said that. It would have been an epic! And we would have not been able to take our tent with us.

I was beginning to think this way too.

Either way, it’s been very entertaining

Kids and I are off camping today. Roof box is packed. The kids will carry this. Tent is on my back, kitchen table is also on my back. Chairs, well the kids will have to carry those too. Just going to walk up to the bus stop. Bus comes once a day, subject to traffic. Let’s hope it arrives today.

bloody stupid suggestion to get a bus! Ok as a single person but not a family. Clearly the poster has never been camping in the U.K. or caught a bus.

Maybe I should have put a LOL on the end cos people only seem to think everyone has mean intentions!! It’s as if no one could possibly write something as a joke

Unfortunately, text is lacking in tone and it's really difficult to tell without emojis and punctuation!!!! 😔 🤔🎏

Well most people tell someone to enjoy their pity party in jest and as a lighthearted joke so I assumed that would be obvious. Won’t assume next time the same as you shouldn’t assume someone is being mean (when they are not)

LynetteScavo · 23/08/2024 08:18

Bloody hell, the comments on this thread just keep on giving! Grin

I hope you're OK now OP - you certainly deserved to have a bit of a moan. It'll be a holiday none of you forget!

Did I miss the suggestion that you should downsize so you can afford to go abroad next year, or do we not have a full house on the bingo card? Grin

oustedbymymate · 23/08/2024 08:28

FFS some of these responses!!!

OP you're entitled to a pity party it is really shit.

No I don't think you can load an entire cars worth of stuff into your arms and 'get on the bus' what a joke!

Sounds like you've sorted it a little bit now. Have you been to south wales before? If you give me the area and want some nice free things to do I'll have a think I'm from down that way!

Maybe you should take in ironing?

Or do childminding?

Seems to save everything on mn...

Raincoatsandwellies · 23/08/2024 09:11

Sounds like a rotten combination of events OP, and agreeably one of those times you tap the card to save the immediate situation and remedy the card afterwards. As long as your finances will allow.

If your car can't be fixed, can the 10 year old manage if you biked with a good cafe stop in the middle? Or is there anyone else on your camp site who could help with a lift if they had a bike rack?

The comments regarding bus services did make me smile. I grew up in the city, could get a bus any place, almost any time, for a pittance.
I now live on the border of 2 counties next to each other.
You cannot get public transport to travel from one county to the next - even though it's 1 road, 10 minutes from town to town.
