Scents that you bizarrely hate!

I’ll go first..

Newspapers and new books are my nemesis! Books are usually manageable but I have genuinely never been able to bring myself to willingly touch a newspaper, I don’t even like being in the same room as them due to the smell🤣 Wish I was joking..

Anyone else have a strange dislike to a smell that would be inoffensive to most other people?

Egg sandwiches, tuna, meat cooking, lilies, petrol, fags

Tomato ketchup. I love the taste and can’t eat chips without it, but the smell of the leftover ketchup on the plate makes me want to retch. I’m weird 😂

Jasmine smells like vomit to me.

To me it smells like cat piss, I cant wear jasmine perfume at all.

veritasverity · 11/08/2024 12:17

Fabreeze, most air fresheners are rank, particularly the ones found in cars ( they give me a throbbing headache). Olbas oil, menthol, all makes me want to vom.
I don't like anything with a cloying strong scent.

Totally agree with the cat piss comment!

MotherofPearl · 11/08/2024 12:22

All fake fruit smells, especially in cosmetics. Coconut, mango, strawberry, pineapple - any shampoo, hand cream, soap scented with these is revolting.

Loathe all air fresheners and most fabric conditioners. So sickly sweet and cloying.

PetrichorSoul · 11/08/2024 12:24

All scented candles. None ever smell like the thing they’re supposed to just cloying chemicals.

American bread. I can smell when I get close to the bread section in an American grocery store. It’s so sickly sweet and wrong 🤮

Patchouli. 😬 Smells like dirty clothes that have been left in the washing basket too long. Scent of a squat, or a tent after an overlong festival.

Although I like roses themselves, rose scented things - no. Too artificial?

Love tomatoes - but don't like the smell of the plants so have to wash hands after watering them.

Recently tried some perfume samples with oud (kind of rotten tree resin). Nope.

Fahrenheit aftershave. I can smell it a mile off, can't stand it. I once, many years ago, had an awful night out in London - if felt like half the men on the tune were wearing it, I couldn't get away from it!

I had a friend who wore it, I couldn't even be in the same room.....it smelt like stale garlic 😱

MrsCarson · 11/08/2024 12:37

Patchouli barf
Most perfumes make me feel like I can't breathe.

JFDIYOLO · 11/08/2024 12:37

My uni landlady would buy random offal and boil it for the dog. The grey scummy water and the mysterious lumps in the pan. The. SMELL. 40 years on, I can still smell it.

Inspireme2 · 11/08/2024 12:50

I think BO isn't a "bizarre" hate!
I think most people don't like that!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/08/2024 13:01

Bbq sauce

Lavender scents seems to make my eyes itchy and the smell of porridge made on a stove really makes me gag.

Also, joop !

I came to say Joop, brings back memories of c.2003 when all the boys in sixth form used to wear it and it made me heave!

Truffle oil on any food. I have an incredibly strong sense of smell and it makes me retch

I hate truffle oil/truffle anything as well. It’s probably the only ‘taste’ or smell that I properly hate. I find it SO overpowering. Many a mushroom pizza has been ruined for me by the inclusion of truffle oil!

ArcaneSquiggle · 11/08/2024 13:26

Another one for Lavender, it makes me feel ill. So disappointed when Flash added it to their French soap cleaning spray.

Years ago Clinique Aromatics Elixir put an end to me ever accepting a tester spray on the way past a beauty or fragrance counter. Instant headache, spent the rest of the day trying to wash it off but it just wouldn't go. Absolutely revolting, good longevity though!

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 11/08/2024 13:30

Cooking turkey. Gross

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/08/2024 13:39

Method rhubarb anti-bac cleaner. The cleaner at work uses it and it immediately triggers a cough in me. Same if I use anti-bac washing up liquid. My nose itches and eyes water ... there must be evil stuff in there.

Bleach - argh!!

TeenTraumaTrials · 11/08/2024 13:44

Poison perfume - a flatmates girlfriend when I was at uni wore it and I spent months looking for a discarded kebab all over the flat as it smelt like kebab meat to me

CantSleepSweet · 11/08/2024 14:32

Strawberry ribena. Yuk yuk yuk

Roses, lavender, milk and I think popcorn smells like poo

I thought I was the only one who thought popcorn smells of poo! :)

I hate vanilla, any nut scents in skin care and especially palmers cocoa butter.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 11/08/2024 14:38

Geraniums. As a child my grandmother had a hall stand covered in them. They always looked and smelt musty to me.
