Scents that you bizarrely hate!

I’ll go first..

Newspapers and new books are my nemesis! Books are usually manageable but I have genuinely never been able to bring myself to willingly touch a newspaper, I don’t even like being in the same room as them due to the smell🤣 Wish I was joking..

Anyone else have a strange dislike to a smell that would be inoffensive to most other people?

When I was young I hated the smell of coconut, used to make me retch just thinking about it. I'm over that now but it's moved to the smell of almonds....can't go near marzipan and even cherry scented things smell of almonds to me.

queenofthewild · 10/08/2024 23:56

Ladybirds.

They absolutely stink. No one else in my house can smell them, but I can smell the putrid little fuckers.

justasking111 · 10/08/2024 23:58

Clinique happy. The irony.

It was my perfume when I was in my late teens and during the worst phase of my life when I was dragged for a forced termination then had a total breakdown. If I ever smell it now I have a panic attack.

I feel EXACTLY that way about Pachouli oil.
I didn't have a termination, but was very unhappy as a teenager living away from home.
Pachouli oil was used at that time and even a faint whiff of it gives me a visceral reaction.

A chemist sells aromatherapy oils, and I ''dared'' open a tester of pachouli- and urgh- the welter of that era came back.

Lavender , most nuts - it’s beyond me why coconut and Almond are popular for body washes / shampoo .

JustBec · 11/08/2024 00:00

Petrol. Fresh tarmac. New car smell.

Me too! It's horrible!

I love it! fresh and clean sun dried and wind dried- so different to washing dried indoors.

Fraaahnces · 11/08/2024 00:03

Toast… Don’t know why, but everyone else seems to love it. My reaction to the smell of bread in the toaster is weirdly visceral. I do have coeliac disease, but the smell of bread doesn’t do that to me.

Vanilla. Smells like old, wet nappies. Gross.

Not so much a dislike but the smell of Body Shop White Musk used to give me almost instant diarrhoea… which made shopping centres in the early 90s somewhat troublesome 🤣

😆 A smell that gives instant squits?! I remember that white musk smell. And Dewberry. {showing me age}

honeylulu · 11/08/2024 00:06

Hated the smell (and taste) of cinnamon for years after living in the US for a while. They seemed to put it in everything. I didn't mind it at first but it crept up on me suddenly and I couldn't bear it. I think it look a good 15 years to tolerate and I actually like it to taste again now and can tolerate it to smell.

I also hate the new car smell. I've only ever bought one new and was so proud but the smell was awful and made me feel like choking.

I love the smell of petrol and creosote though!!!

They smell weirdly ''bitter'' and acrid. Ditto shield bugs.
There was a massive swarm of ladybirds about 30 yrs ago- they were literally everywhere.

Never seen or smelled the like before.

justasking111 · 11/08/2024 00:09

Any artificial scents in candles, air fresheners they make me cough until I'm choking.

DH car freshener I have to open the car window

Scented washing up liquid which DH buys sometimes, it's quite vile to wash up with.

longdistanceclaraclara · 11/08/2024 00:16

Anything strong, poison is the worst perfume. Headache in seconds.

Ionasmum19 · 11/08/2024 00:16

I hate the smell of any magic tree car air freshners, instantly make me feel ill, and also cherry scented things, yuck!!

StoneTheCrone · 11/08/2024 00:19

Chanel perfumes. Awful.

Curry. Just horrible.

Baby powder. Sickly.

reesewithoutaspoon · 11/08/2024 00:21

Jasmine... Smells like dead things and death. Cant bear it

JulianAssangesCat · 11/08/2024 00:23

Labrador smell 🤢 Like old trainers but x1000.
I bought a dress from Vinted and it had that smell even after washing it. I had to throw it away.

I hate the smell of line dried washing! HATE it!!!

Came on here to say this! Smells 'raw' to me and makes me feel a bit sick!

Friendofdennis · 11/08/2024 00:42

Salted caramel anything smells horrible to me.

Fraaahnces · 11/08/2024 00:45

@honeylulu I can’t stand the smell of cinnamon either. That’s from living in the Netherlands and the smell of dusty old cheap candles left unused to scent the toilets. 🤮
Also ants… they smell like formaldehyde

expiredplants · 11/08/2024 00:50

New carpets
Scented fabric conditioner
Dogs. To me they smell overpowering and absolutely vile, I can’t bear to be around them for long
Ladybirds too, but they’re a bit easier to avoid!
