I’ll go first..

Newspapers and new books are my nemesis! Books are usually manageable but I have genuinely never been able to bring myself to willingly touch a newspaper, I don’t even like being in the same room as them due to the smell🤣 Wish I was joking..

Anyone else have a strange dislike to a smell that would be inoffensive to most other people?

Both have already been mentioned
Lavender & Clinique Happy

I always think paper cups have a horrible smell, especially if it’s tea in them. When I was in labour the midwife had brought me a paper cup of water to sip and DH said that she kept urging him to offer the straw to me, but I kept telling him it tasted like the paper cup smell, and to throw it away 😅 Also hate the smell of line dried washing.

evtheria · 10/08/2024 22:27

@Poggishairtufts Grin that was like a lineup of Maison Margiela replica perfumes!

I hate the smell of raw chicken (not odd except raw beef smells really... really good...?), "sweet" laundry detergents (most of them these days), cooked mushrooms, new car Envy New car may be one of the worst, I'd rather smell fresh slurry

Chanel no 5
Tea with milk in

30 yrs ago my DH had a Saturday/holiday job on the perfume counter in Boots. He offered a lady to try Chanel No5, she replied ‘no, that stuff smells of cats piss on me’. Never forgotten, and we often say it when we try a perfume we don’t like.

WonderingWanda · 10/08/2024 22:33

Chanel No 5 takes me back to feeling travel sick as a child as does the new car /car upholstery smell.

The smell of hot tar when they resurface roads. I can tolerate it now but as a kid I used to gag if I smelt it.

Yankee candles, especially the pumpkin spice one...also makes me retch. They have such an artificial smell.

SaintHonoria · 10/08/2024 22:38

Yes, Estée Lauder Youth Dew was the thing of nasal nightmares. I’m not sure if is still in production but I don’t think I’d be brave enough to sample it.

I hate this with a passion , if i catch the merest whiff in a shop i actively avoid the woman wearing it .
It is sold on qvc and i couldn't believe how much the presenter was spraying around herself ,she would have smelt soooooo bad.
My worst experience was when my friends lovely mom was wearing it and cuddled my new baby ,she wreaked of it , as soon as i got home i had to strip her off wash her clothes bathe her and wash her hair ,and i could still smell a slight waft for a couple of days.
It is the vilest smelling perfume ever , beyond me how anyone could like it .
Also milky tea -blurrgh .

LovelyDaaling · 10/08/2024 22:52

Tomato soup, plain yoghurt and lavender.

NameChanged100thTime · 10/08/2024 22:53

Those nasty cheap body sprays my 12 year old daughter loves (and make me gag). Sol de janeiro sprays smell the same, just cost a lot more....

@itsallbowlsbaby I love all those. As a child I used to sniff shoe polish. When pregnant I had a form of pica where I loved the smell of paint, tar etc.

Love the smell of tar😂 hate petrol/diesel 🤢

I hate the smell of freshly cut grass.

Which people always say on 'smells you love' threads.

So I feel you!

This to me it smells of high pollen

Snugglemonkey · 10/08/2024 23:06

My son likes fish. He likes cream. He cannot stand to be in the house if I make fish pie, chowder etc. He says his nose hates how the cream wraps fish. It makes no sense to me, but I have stopped making them all the same.

Boopbops · 10/08/2024 23:12

strawberryshortcakescat · 10/08/2024 23:13

Argan Oil... Makes me feel sick.

Woollypullover · 10/08/2024 23:14

Bleach. Makes me so sick, even just a hint of the smell.
Frying mushrooms. Smells filthy.
Chickpeas when you first open the tin. Smells as though someone's farted.
There's a plant that's a bit like ivy, but I can't remember what it's called. It's a bush, but the leaves look like ivy. Acrid stink of cat piss.

Eggs and dead fish (but I think lots of people hate those!)

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 10/08/2024 23:18

My Grandma wore Youth Dew - and yes, it is rank. I loved her dearly but never wanted to hug her when she was dressed up to go out because of it.

Lilies here too - I have a cat, so have an excuse for not letting them in the house.
